$1 million humanitarian award opens for nominations

Actor George Clooney and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel on selection panel for new $1 million humanitarian award

Nominations open on Wednesday for a new $1 million humanitarian award, the winner of which will be chosen by a selection committee chaired by actor George Clooney and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel.
The Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity will be awarded annually to "a person or group of people who put themselves at risk to enable others to survive".
The prize has been launched by Vartan Gregorian, Noubar Afeyan and Ruben Vardanyan, the co-founders of 100 LIVES, a project set up to remember individuals and institutions who saved Armenian lives during the genocide 100 years ago.
They are offering the winner $100,000, plus a grant of $1 million to be donated to a charitable organisation that inspired their work.
“We are calling for nominations of lesser known yet inspirational stories of courage and intervention,” said Mr Vardanyan, an Armenia-born philanthropist.
“We want to honour those who risk their own safety because of a heightened sense of humanity and responsibility and support life-saving causes in a tangible way.”

The organisers await nominations from individuals on the 100 LIVES website but suggest that potential winners could be working in many fields, including economic development, public health, law, government and education, and in any region of the world.
Among those who might be considered for nomination are the British nurse William Pooley, who contracted Ebola while caring for victims of the disease in Sierra Leone.
Or perhaps the remarkable surgeon David Nott who returns again and again to the world's most dangerous war zones to deliver essential care.
Ishwor Ghimire, a Nepalese teenager who helped rescue 55 children from the orphanage in which he grew up when it was hit in an earthquake this year, might also be a fit nominee.

Thanks PAN.  There are so many who do selfless tasks for the sake of others.  A nice honor.  Sure it won't be easy picking one that shines above the rest.

No, I think it'll be very tough for the judges.

And it will happen annually, with the ceremony in Yereven every year.

Nominations are now open for the Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity, a new annual international humanitarian award to be given to a person or a group of people who put themselves at risk to enable others to survive. To judge the nominations, the Aurora Prize has gathered an eclectic and acclaimed group of people to serve on its selection committee. Some of these notable names include Hollywood star and academy award-winning actor and humanitarian, George Clooney; Nobel Laureates Elie Wiesel and Shirin Ebadi; former President of Ireland Mary Robinson; human rights activist Hina Jilani; former Australian Foreign Minister and President and CEO of the International Crisis Group Gareth Evans; and President of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, Vartan Gregorian. All of these names are accomplished in a diverse range of fields, but are united in their commitment to the principles of humanitarianism.

The Aurora Prize is calling for nominations of lesser-known yet inspirational stories of courage and intervention. It wants to honour those who risked their own safety because of a heightened sense of humanity and responsibility and support life-saving causes in a practical way.

The Aurora Prize is the philanthropic idea of Vartan Gregorian, Noubar Afeyan and Ruben Vardanyan, co-founders of 100 LIVES, an initiative expressing gratitude to the individuals and institutions whose heroic actions saved Armenian lives during the Genocide 100 years ago. The name Aurora was chosen to honour the memory of Aurora Mardiganian who, as a child, was forced to witness the atrocities of the Armenian Genocide, including losing her father and brothers. 100 LIVES seeks to share remarkable stories of saviours and survivors, celebrating the strength of the human spirit.
“Sadly, tragic issues and events continue to plague the world’s populations,” said Aurora Prize Co-Chair, George Clooney. “This Prize seeks to draw the world’s attention to some of the remarkable efforts being undertaken to help save the world’s most vulnerable from humanitarian crises happening around the globe.” This award is seeking to build a humanitarian movement by drawing attention to the issues faced by the world’s most vulnerable and reward individuals and organisations that work to address those issues in a meaningful way.
The winner will be honoured with a US$100,000 award, as well as a US$1,000,000 grant to be donated to a charitable organisation that inspired their work. This is in harmony with the spirit of the Prize and allows the recipient to continue the cycle of giving. Nominations may span a broad range of sectors in the non-profit field, including economic development, public health, law, government and education. George Clooney will present the inaugural Aurora Prize to the winning recipient during a ceremony to be held April 24, 2016 in Yerevan, Armenia.
