George Clooney's 'Money Monster' Set to Film on Wall Street

FINANCIAL DISTRICT — A bit of Hollywood is coming to Wall Street.
George Clooney’s latest movie, “Money Monster” — in which he plays a CNBC-like TV personality who spouts stock tips — will be shooting in the Financial District starting April 8.
The movie, which co-stars Julia Roberts as Clooney’s character’s TV producer, will film in several spots Downtown, including on Nassau, Liberty and Wall streets, said Joe Guest, a location manager for the film.
One scene will be shot in front of Federal Hall, where the filmmakers will be “depicting an NYPD response to an emergency,” Guest told a Community Board 1 Financial District committee meeting Wednesday night.
The film, directed by Jodi Foster, centers on Clooney’s character being taken hostage during his live “Money Monster” show by a disgruntled viewer who lost all his money after following Clooney’s financial advice.
Guest said local businesses and residents would be notified before some of the more intense scenes involving police are filmed.
The movie is scheduled to film for about 15 days, on Wednesdays through Sundays, with no night filming.
To benefit the neighborhood, Guest said the crew will eat at local restaurants rather than using catering services.
Clooney, in town for the filming, was recently spotted at a restaurant in Astoria with Bill Murray.

OK I'm not familiar with NY but isn't Wall Street near Time Square? Wouldn't that create a little mass reaction of People while being there? Or is it far away? Imagine all the tourists

Nicky Times Square is more midtown. Wall Street is located at the lower end of NYC. But it's still a congested area. There are a bunch of tourists around that area, especially to visit the World Trade Center memorial among other attractions. Lots of coordination and logistics involved in filming in the Wall St. area.

Thanks....this will be interesting to see how they coordinate that.

Nicky - Wall St. is in the financial district of Manhattan, which also includes the stock exchange, the WTC memorial, Fraunces Tavern and other tourist attractions. It is a very congested area during work hours. I'm sure a lot of pre-planning went into the filming schedule so they would disturb the locals as little as possible. We New Yorkers are pretty loud and grumpy when we're inconvenienced.

Unless they move the filming uptown I doubt they would have any effect on the Times Square/Midtown area. Wall St. is about 4-5 miles south of there.

Just think how different things are now for George compared to when he was filming the NYC scenes for The Peacemaker.

Who knows PAN.  He's so funny.  He wears the same outfit frequently.  And he's got the same sack with him. AND the hat.  AND the scarf.  It could have been from today or last week.

Given that the film centres around a game show and Lee Gates hosts it, is there any scenario where he would end up on or near Wall Street? 

Or could it be that George's bit continues in an LA studio before and after the Easter break?

PAN - The Iconosquare photo is dated 3/9, if that helps.

The only reason I can think of for George to be in any exterior shots is if the story begins and/or ends outside the tv studio where the hostage-taking happens. In that case he might do some filming on the NY streets. Otherwise, I guess it would be all studio work, which he could do anywhere.

I guess I missed the article that said it was a game show.  I read this synopsis of it and it doesn't sound like a game show to me.  Based somewhat on Jim Cramer of Mad Money on US TV.

looks like they're filming in the CBS broadcast center for a week.

Would think George has caught up with Charlie Rose if they are filming at the CBS Studios.  Charlie is the anchor for the CBS morning news show.  Wish George would go on Charlie's evening show but I'm sure that isn't going to happen.

Donnamarie - Anything's possible. I'm still holding out hope that George will turn up on either Charlie's or Dave's show before he's ready to leave NY. Why not? He doesn't have to talk about HER unless he wants to - especially on Charlie's show. He could talk about his upcoming films or what's happening in Sudan.

Maybe he'll turn up on the late-night circuit when Tomorrowland is closer to release, or maybe when Dave is doing his last shows before he retires. Fingers crossed.

I hope you're right Lizzy.  It seems like he hasn't done an interview in such a long time.

I really hope he goes to Letterman Show one last time, before Dave's retirement.

PAN - I'm about an hour and a half by subway from where they're filming now - which was my regular morning commute when I worked in the city. Glad I don't have to do that anymore!

If I'm feeling energetic I might take a ride in to the city and pop by CBS, but I'm guessing there won't be anything to see. Looks like they're filming inside, and honestly, Hanging around outside all day on the off chance of catching him coming or going doesn't excite me. Sadly, I'm getting too old for that kind of thing.

This film sounds great.

Katie - If I could get the timing right I'd give it a shot, but it's really hard to know when would be a good time to catch them there. Before dinner? After dinner? Later at night when they're coming in from somewhere else?

And how long do you think the hotel lets you sit there getting sloshed before they pour you out the door? My luck, they'd wait until I couldn't walk and then kick me out - and I probably wouldn't get to see George anyway! Or worse yet, I would!

According to the latest filming permits, Money Monster will be filming on Maiden Lane and Nassau St in Manhattan on Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19.
The Jodie Foster-directed movie stars George Clooney as the host of a live stock investment TV show who makes a bad call on a hot stock, causing a disgruntled investor to storm his studio with a gun and threaten to kill him if the stock price doesn’t bounce back. Julia Roberts, Jack O’Connell Giancarlo Esposito and Dominic West also star.

The industry trades report that Money Monster officially wrapped as of 5-3-15.

Way2Old - It feels like they just started shooting not that long ago, but I guess they couldn't count on George for much longer because he has to promote Tomorrowland.( I wonder if he'll be back here when they open it - if they even have a premiere here.)

Lizzy the premiere is set to be at Disneyland this weekend but I'm sure they'll come to NYC screening the film and doing a press conference.

It was a short shoot, and they worked weekends, which isn't standard for studio films, so I'm guessing it had more to do with the budget than it did George's schedule. Paying crew overtime for a few weekends sometimes makes more financial sense than extending the shoot for even a few days (considering insuring the talent and the production, paying for lodging, etc).

Way2Old - Just curious. Who's responsible for the insurance costs for the talent?

It's built into the production budget. Studios have overall insurance for their projects, of course, so sometimes the accounting gets a little creative.

I'm wondering if George had the cost of his hotel stay expensed to the production. Someone said he owns an apartment there, but it's not his primary home, so technically he could have had the production foot the bill because he was there for work. Doesn't sound like something he'd do, though.
