'Tomorrowland' Cannes Opening Film Odds

Odds on opening film at Cannes

By now we have usually heard what’s going to be the opening movie at the year’s biggest festival. For amusement only I offer my odds on the runners

What’s going on here? [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] what the opening film at Cannes was to be way back in January. Of course, the ultimately awful Grace of Monaco had been kicking around for ages and, with its local interest, had been favourite for the position since the previous autumn . Much the same could be said of The Great Gatsby 12 months earlier. The festival is still two months away, but Cannes usually enjoys setting up some preparatory publicity in early Spring.
Our assumption must be that they are waiting to see if something will be ready in time. It could be anything. The rules on selection are not hard and fast. The film is usually not in competition, but there are exceptions from time to time. The only certain thing is that the picture must feature at least one — ideally more — significant movie star. If you want a sense of the variance, remember that the big dumb The Da Vinci Code opened in 2006, two years before  Fernando Meirelles’s unsettling, depressing (in competition) Blindness.
Anyway, here are the runners and riders with ludicrous, plucked-from-the-air odds.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (George Miller) — 5/2

INSIDE OUT (Pete Docter) — 4/1

TOMORROWLAND (Brad Bird) — 5/1

JURASSIC WORLD (Colin Trevorrow) — 11/2

CAROL (Todd Haynes) — 11/2

YOUTH (Paolo Sorrentino) — 10/1

I could see George at least show u. at the Cannes. It could kick off their European promotion tour for TOMORROWLAND.
He would also like to meet the jury Coens.

It doesn't look as if Tomorrowland is going to Cannes.

I think that's because TOMORROWLAND is planning to screen on May 6th before the opening day of Cannes. And they're possibly going to the Paris Disney Park to promote the film.
