What's with all the locked threads?
I though this was a disccusion forum? The locking seems arbitrary and heavy handed to me. Those threads will die a natural death without locking.

Not sure what "all" threads are locked? I see a couple in the girls girls girls section of the forum where people were asked to stick to the forum rules and/or tone down their discussion and/or stick to the subject.

Re: What's with all the locked threads?
In the past I recall threads being closed when posters got very heated and personal toward each other. I don't recall it happening because it was decided that a topic was no longer open for discussion/worth discussing.

Re: What's with all the locked threads?
Hi fava,
I explained to katiedot my reasons for locking the Amal threads but I did also post in the Amal dinner thread that the discussion kept going off dinner and into nasty comments about the lady. I had tried on three occassions to get the thread back on track but since it wasn't working locked it until katie could decide what to do.
It's her site and I wasn't sure some of the comments might not come back to be a problem for katie as the owner of the site. Thought it best to be a bit more cautious until she could decide how she wanted to handle it.

Re: What's with all the locked threads?
I will answer your comment. Let me ask you this GiGi -- what if someone were calling YOU an idiot, making comments about your eyebrows or what you were wearing when all you happened to do was get photographed with someone else?GiGi wrote:Free speech police. They do exist.
See my point here is that there is free speech and then there is really nasty speech that people say hiding behind "free speech rights" that they like to throw out there. Sometimes it might be good to think about what you post before you post it.
I was very convinced that Amal was NOT a date but a business dinner yet the tone of the comments were getting nasty. And as I said in the thread, the gals that George usually dates know the score and are in it for the publicity. So to me, they're basically fair game for their ACTIONS I don't tend to make comments about how they look unless I can say something positive. However, if they're posting crotch shots of themselves on the internet, then they've opened themselves up for the comments they will get from that.
But the lawyer had done none of that and people were getting bent out of shape - hence the locking of the thread as I said, until Katie could determine what she wanted to do.
As to the Monika thread that one got locked just temporarily since George had stated he was not dating her.
All threads that needed unlocking are unlocked now but I have this question for anyone who comments on this forum...
For years now we've been bemoaning the fact that George doesn't date "appropriate" women. Either in age, or in classiness, or even in braininess. And yet when a woman who would fit most of our "wish lists" for him is pictured with him there were STILL nasty comments being thrown out about her.
So my question is this - if she was close to the type of woman we've been saying he should be dating, why the nasty comments about her?
I think too many here really believe NO WOMAN is good enough for him - no matter what you may say in platitude.
Me, I would have been happy had this been a woman he decided to date. Brains, serious work, looks like she has a fun side with her kicky shoes and fun earrings, and yet she was ripped for both of those things.
I think some here should take a look inside and ask yourself if your issue is that George isn't dating YOU and that anyone but YOU would be good enough.
I guess I'm at the point in my life that if you want to make statements then when you get what you want you still bitch, then you really didn't want that at all. I'd prefer people be honest about that and not make statements that are basically being revealed to be bullshit.
Ok rip away....

Re: What's with all the locked threads?
I did not say anything negative about the lawyer--and I agree she is the type many have claimed they wished he would date, but there are many who will criticize any he dates (or goes out to dinner with!). I had to laugh at how quickly the nutjob on imdb changed her tune when the identity of the dinner companion was discovered.
I always defended Stacy's height too-- not something she has any control over. Yes, the comments can get nasty, but I also think the lawyer is an adult woman, was voted "hottest barrister" or something and is involved in high profile cases. I think she can take it and would defend people's right to free speech (even though it does get nasty on the internet). I think it is a bit of a double standard to let comments about girlfriends go, but lock the thread for similar comments about someone else.

Re: What's with all the locked threads?
Fava there have been many instances where posters have either been banned or their comments edited on the Girls thread because they went too far or comments were deemed very offensive to some. So its not accurate to state that similar comments on the Girls thread are just ignored. The difference I think in this case is that this women was not on a romantic date with George, but the mere suggestion that it could have been led to a lot of inappropriate comments. See that's the problem with offensive comments, none of us can ever know when we post something how other people will take those comments....

Hey fava, wasn't singling you out - just making comments based on observations of many comments made over time here and on other Clooney sites. Sorry if I gave you that impression.

Re: What's with all the locked threads?
Naturally I will not like anyone George dates to a point. I'm realistic enough to know he is going to date someone and want him happy. I have no right to judge another but I have to say that I would love to see George with someone of this lady's caliber. I must give my opinion here I think locking the threads was needed at that time.

Re: What's with all the locked threads?
I kind of felt it was right to lock threads when any question comes up as to what could harm the forum owner. Until she can decide for herself. Even if I would have had a dozen things to say, I would still go by that.
And, sometimes harm can be done to persons being discussed. Armal is from an islamist region. That, even tho she is highly educated and does so many very important things in the international arena, could ever so easily be murdered by a misunderstanding islamist wild group, who may take something that when said enough, makes that group, decide to harm someone like her just because she is a female under their religion.
It wouldn't even matter what she believes. Its what those ppl believe that drive them. So sometimes, it behooves those of us who discuss so many things, to act responsibly. You never know whose life may be saved just by not convincing terrible crazies of something that may turn out not to be true.
Well, at least in knowing who she was, it did occur to me that she needs to be more careful about what reputations can do to her life. I'm sure she knew all the possibilities. But we don't. George does have a rep for being a ladies man and to those islamists that could seem pretty bad for one of their country women. Despite who he is. Some of them are VERY extreme. But it was just a business discussion.
And George didn't want anything to bring bad situations for anyone. But I know, its hard sometimes to know about so many dif things going on in everything discussed. But I do think we should take some time to consider the possibilities of what we discuss. It sure won't hurt anything.

Re: What's with all the locked threads?
I feel uneasy about discussing someone's cultural/religious situation on a public fan forum for a
film actor.
Sorry, I'm not able to articulate clearly how
I feel about it.
It's just an instinctive feeling I had when reading
the last post. Maybe I'm being over sensitive ?
Not having a go at you Joanie's clone.

Re: What's with all the locked threads?
I think it was right to lock those threads. The dicussion was at the point it didn't make any sence anymore and to lock it gave it a break.
I know that there is the possibility to "ignore" those threads but at the end we all check anyway as we always think maybe something "new about George" got posted.
And I agree with Lorna. Lot of people hide behind "free speech" excuse..... but it doesn't mean you can say what you want.
I don't even know why people get upset about locking threads there is still lot of other threads in this forum to talk about

Re: What's with all the locked threads?
Its OK JO. I just tried to put it in a way that left most of what might have been more descriptive out and wanted to show how that could be a possibility to her but didn't know how to do it without mentioning it in some way. As that would possibly be a threat. She is one of their highly respected women and they prolly wouldn't take too much crap from the playboy rumors on it. And it wasn't even true at all.

Regarding the bullshit excuse of 'free speech' that people like to hide behind in order to share their nasty thoughts, I'd like to remind everyone that there are rules on this forum that you agree to follow when you post here. If you don't like those rules that's just too bad.

Hi clooneys six, not sure if I understand you correctly. But Posts can not be locked like a thread. Can I ask why you like to lock or like to have a Password protected post? Maybe when you explain I understand better what you mean and maybe there is another answer to it. thanks,

Re: What's with all the locked threads?
I saw one forum that was about Amal that got locked and there was 1 poster in particular who was being very very harsh, name calling and saying some pretty ugly things and I understood why it was locked and was very grateful for it. It stopped a forum fight which I've seen drag down other forums FAST.
I said this on the forum rules thread, saying it here- thank you for this forum Katiedot, thankyou for the rules and thankyou Katiedot & Mods for running a tight ship. i don't think this is a free speech issue, if you wouldn't say it to George or Amal's face or put it in the NY TImes with your Real Life name & contact information then don't say it.
(delete this post, edit if anything over the time and/or offensive*)
