it's me I saw that big cruise ship in the wedding pictures and couldn't believe it was real. Is that the issue on these sites? Seems dangerous to smaller boats if you ask me! Certainly takes away the character and charm of Venice if you have such huge ships sailing into the canals.it's me wrote:scaring image

Re: October 2014 Chit Chat
So since I mentioned one non-George film in the RDJ thread thought I'd comment about a film I have seen.
There is a film out called "My Old Lady" with Kevin Kline, Maggie Smith and the gal from "The English Patient" but I can't think of her name right now. Brit gal who also speaks French.
The film is about Kevin's character inheriting an apartment in Paris France from his father. A beautiful apartment with it's own courtyard/backyard space.
He comes to France intending to sell it and finds that Maggie and her daughter are living there and can continue to do so as long as Maggie is alive. She plays a woman in her 90s.
There is a special name for this type of contract but can't remember the French word they used.
Anyway, I thought this film was going to be more comedy than drama but it ended up being more drama and at times incredibly sad as they all work through actions of the past that have brought them all to this place.
I enjoyed the film but came away with a bit of a feeling of disquiet seeing how much the man's father and his father's decisions in the past were still affecting this man in the present.
It just left me a little sad that someone could go through life letting something from their childhood continue to affect them through so much of their lives.
Made me think - parents need to be kind to their children. And people really need to think long and hard about having children if their nature is not to nurture others. And you can only delude yourself for so long that actions and decisions made decades earlier weren't still having negative effects.
Maggie, as always, was excellent so I would recommend it but although it has a few comic moments, it's really a drama.

Thanks Lorna for that review of My Old Lady.
It sounds like the type of film I'd enjoy.
Kristin Scott Thomas is the daughter.
I agree with your penultimate paragraph 100%
and yes, any film with Maggie Smith is worth seeing.
Did you see her in My Home in Umbria ?

Re: October 2014 Chit Chat
Think I'd like this film,Lorna. Sounds very thoughtful and multi-stranded it.
As for your penultimate paragraph, Lorna, I agree. Kindness is everything. I never smacked any of my lot - I always thought that if I did, it was me the parent who had lost control, and the thought of a big thing hitting out at a little thing seemed unbelievably unfair.
The thing is a lot of people don't realise that children absorb over 25% of their knowledge of life before they're five...their brains are quite literally sponges. Scary, eh? And that's why a lot of the stuff stays with them for life really.....

I don't watch Walking Dead but that tram station stunt was awesome! I was trying to figure out why no one noticed it right away and it's because they took video of the street so it looked like the glass was transparent.

UK Laws change prison term for online trolling
to two years from six months.
Internet trolls could face up to two years in jail under new laws, Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has said.
He told the Mail on Sunday quadrupling the current maximum six-month term showed his determination to "take a stand against a baying cyber-mob".
The plan was announced days after TV presenter Chloe Madeley suffered online abuse, which Mr Grayling described as "crude and degrading".
She has welcomed the proposed laws but said social media should be regulated.
Social media 'venom'
Under the new measures, magistrates could pass serious cases on to crown courts.
Mr Grayling told the newspaper: "These internet trolls are cowards who are poisoning our national life.
"No-one would permit such venom in person, so there should be no place for it on social media. That is why we are determined to quadruple the current six-month sentence."

Re: October 2014 Chit Chat
Wouldn't it be great if there was a way to ban trolls from social media and the internet? Instead of prison for 2 years, confiscate all their gadgets (phones, computers, etc.) and not allow them to purchase new ones for 2 years. Maybe the thought of having to deal with real people face to face would scare them into behaving like decent human beings.
(I also think drunk drivers should have their cars confiscated, not just their driver's license.)

I bought the DVD but still haven't had time to watch it.
I'm going to try this week. I tell ya, with friends marrying and shopping for that, starting to shop for Christmas, starting to AGAIN plan for my bosses yearly holiday luncheon (which I have to plan and execute), working on my biz plus working full time and just keeping up with episodic TV it's a wonder I get anything done at all.
And I will note here - watched the latest "The Good Wife" - last night at about midnight from taping it earlier -- and even after all these years, that show continues to surprise the hell out of me.
I remember when it first came out and I wondered what the heck they were going to do with a storyline about a woman standing by her man during a highly publized scandal. And here were are -- some years later and the show continues to evolve, inform and often stills makes me laugh out loud. Really loud.
- Spoiler:
- Diane's comment last night when she saw the roach was priceless!
Anyway, will let you know about "My Home In Umbria." As soon as I can carve out some time to watch it.

Hey, do any of you creative types have any ideas for me? I got the short straw and have to host a Quiz night at our hotel on Christmas Eve. My first thought was to just pull together some quiz questions from the internet, but now I've been told it's for a group of Chinese guests, who may not speak English well (if at all!).
Any smart ideas on a 'quiz' I can host for them that doesn't need the ability to understand questions in English????

Since names don't change across languages, why not a 'Name the Celebrity/Head of State/Politician/Business Mogul/Whatever' game? All you'd need is photos of the people.
Maybe not fun or challenging, but that's all I got.

Maybe you can also do a Quiz which calls somehting like "made in....."...
and then with Pictures they have to guess if it's made in China, Europe or US. and there are lot of things made in China so maybe after the quiz they feel even special as you make China look good......

Re: October 2014 Chit Chat
A quick visit... then I'm off again LOL.
Katie, a rather long shot at an idea. The celebrity ID is good, but maybe some folks don't care who Justin Beeber is. So, are you familiar with the tv game Jepardy? How about a game based on it, using popular movies. Can be international, or keep it exclusive to Japanese films, say from the past 20 years. Divide the catagories into Action, Thriller, Comedy, Romance etc. Show a short excerpt from film trailer ( without sound).. probably can get them from you tube. The contestant, or team has to identify the movie in a certain amount of seconds. The contestant/team with the most points wins. Prize could be DVDs of some of the movies, or you could get cute and give away movie passes. Just a thought.
Hope everyone is well. still burnt-out, so ( no offense intended)won't be reading or participating in the rest of the forum for yet a while longer. You gals are great. But for right now, my whole attitude regarding the happy couple remains "who the f#%^ cares"
Be good and play nice. PigPen

Ah fuck. Ladies, I know we're all on different time zones and what not, but next time I go to the bar like it's ok to follow a maragarita with a tequila-tini with two mai tais, jaegermeister shots and then open a bottle of Turkish raki, one of you has GOT to stop me. Are we clear on that? Oh, and that jumping in the pool fully clothed thing? Also got to be stopped.
Thank you.

Re: October 2014 Chit Chat
Maybe I should put "Get shitfaced drunk" on my bucket list.
Katiedot, next time load up on Pedialyte before you start drinking, and then start sipping it as soon as you wake up the next day.
By the time you're looking at pools and thinking, "I should be in that fully clothed," there's no point in stopping you.
