The women on top! Amal Clooney and Victoria Beckham among Evening Standard's ten most influential Londoners

She may have only just married Hollywood hot property George Clooney, but wife Amal Alamuddin is already the most influential woman in London, according to the London Evening Standard newspaper.

The newly married lawyer - who changed her name last week after marrying the US heartthrob in September - is at number four, five places ahead of international fashion mogul Victoria Beckham as they both head up the Top 10.

Amal, 36, and Victoria, 40, beat off competition from leading men like British Prime Minister David Cameron and world-renowned scientist Stephen Hawking and their equally-influential husbands were nowhere to be seen in the Top 20.

Human rights lawyer Amal returned to work last week when she headed to Athens to advise the Greek government in its battle to repatriate the ancient Elgin Marbles statues from Britain.

And, following the media storm of her picturesque Venice to 53-year-old George, Mrs Clooney is proving to be a woman to watch in the British capital for the upcoming year.

The Duchess of Cambridge, who was among Time magazine's Most Influential People In The World in 2013, failed to make the list as Amal swooped in just behind politicians George Osborne and Boris Johnson and Deep Mind technologies founder Demis Hassabis.

Mother-of-four Victoria, meanwhile, wasn't far behind, after this month saw her open her flagship fashion store on London's Dover Street in affluent Mayfair.

Her store has already proved to be a huge success in the capital, attracting a significant footfall and even celebrity fans.

This week, the wife of footballer David Beckham also joined the likes of Angelina Jolie, Emma Watson and Leonardo DiCaprio to be named the new UN International Goodwill Ambassador.

As far as a fashion following go, she and her husband have shared some of the most influential trends including everything from haircuts to outfit choices.

Unfortunately, Victoria was unable to attend the launch of her shop as she was busy addressing the United Nations in New York, where she made an impassioned plea to safeguard women’s health and stop babies dying of Aids.

With her charity work and influential speeches, Victoria even beat Malala Yousafzai to the coveted ten highest spots - a youth worker who just accepted the Nobel Peace Prize.

Malala was acknowledged for her courage to stand up Taliban men who denied Pakistani women education and this week received praise from Barack and Michelle Obama.

Some surprise entries into this year's list include the hotelier responsible for the success of The Chiltern Firehouse, Andre Balazs, as well as singer-songwriter Kate Bush, who made her return to the limelight this year with a run of live London shows.

The Real Amal Clooney: Funny, Warm and 'Supremely Self-Confident'

Amal Clooney is many things: a high-powered attorney, a budding fashion icon and George's wife.

But beyond the formidable intellect, impressive career and killer style, she is known among her inner circle for her warmth and wit.

"She has a devastating sense of humor," a close family member tells PEOPLE in this week's issue.

The younger daughter of Ramzi Alamuddin, a retired businessman, and Baria, an editor at Arabic-language newspaper Al-Hayat, she is also a loving aunt to her sister Tala's children, including niece Mia, 12, and 6-year-old twin nephews Jad and Sari.

"She's a doting, pampering aunt," says the family member. "She has a loving heart."

When it comes to her career, however, she is anything but soft.

"She's supremely self-confident," says William Schabas, a law professor at Middlesex University in London, who knows Amal professionally.

While she incites media mania in Greece, where she has been
working on a case involving one of the world's longest-standing cultural property disputes, those who know her say she will harness the spotlight to focus on issues that matter to her.

The case, which centers on a collection of Greek masterpieces known as the Elgin Marbles or the Parthenon Marbles, "is very difficult and shows that she is not shying away from controversy," a legal source says.

Adds a colleague: "She is picking up where the honeymoon temporarily left off. She is back with a vengeance."

So now she is the fourth most influential person in London, ahead of Victoria Beckham. Gosh.

The People article is praising what an amazing woman she is with a devasting sense of humour and a doting, pampering aunt to Tala's three kids. But they choose  the worst photo of her and threw in William Scabas comment on her being supremely self-confident. Hmmm...

Here is celebitchy's take on the lastest articles.

People Mag’s latest Amal Clooney propaganda piece is spectacular, blatant

Amal Clooney is back in London after her whirlwind trip to Greece earlier this week. You can see the photos of her in London here. Her travel-wear has greatly improved, right? I think she’s basing her newlywed look on one part Duchess Kate and one part Jackie Kennedy. Anyway, there are even more Amal stories, if you can believe it, so let’s get to it.
First of all, Amal was just named the “Most Influential Woman In London” by The Evening Standard, a reasonably conservative UK paper. Amal actually made #4 on the Most Influential list, but she’s the highest ranking woman, thus “most influential woman.” She’s more influential than Victoria Beckham AND Duchess Kate. Kate didn’t even make the list!
Next, a days-old story that I just never got around to writing about, but it is sort of interesting. Apparently, Amal got her new husband a very special wedding gift: expensive Murano cocktail glasses from Venice. George Clooney (Mr. Alamuddin, if you will) admired the Murano glasses that were used during their wedding celebrations, so Amal ordered him a set of 12 at a cost of $100 each. She also bought him a matching set of 12 silk napkins and napkin holders. Because what self-respecting heterosexual man doesn’t want napkin holders, amirite? Admit it, girl. You bought the napkin holders as a gift for yourself. You so fancy, Amal.
And finally, we have this absolutely spectacular piece of pro-Alamooney propaganda courtesy of People Magazine:
Amal Clooney is many things: a high-powered attorney, a budding fashion icon and George’s wife. But beyond the formidable intellect, impressive career and killer style, she is known among her inner circle for her warmth and wit.
“She has a devastating sense of humor,” a close family member tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue.

[From People]
Wow. What a blatant attempt to humanize Amal Clooney. Now that People Magazine’s readers (the Minivan Majority) know that she’s a top barrister with great hair AND she’s funny AND she’s a loving aunt, maybe now people will feel better about this hussy who stole America’s Bachelor ™? As for this whole “she doesn’t shy away from controversy” thing… um, I have mixed feelings. While the marble debate is a hot topic in Amal’s hometown (London), it’s a pretty artsy-fartsy #firstworldcontroversy. If she was really into controversy, she should have taken that UN job investigating war crimes between the Palestinians and Israelis. THAT would have been a hotbed of actual controversy. #NoDisrespectToTheNapkinHolders

Can't say I disagree with everything they say, but they did ignore her representation of Julian Assange and some of her other cases that are controversial. They're no mare balanced than People.

I think Atalante wrote the celebitchy article. She's working there under a pseudonym. Celebitchy has never been a fan of Clooney's. I don't read their stuff. Why would they give Amal any credit?

Just to mention that the Evening Standard isn't a 'conservative UK newspaper'. It's a local newspaper available in London only that's borderline tabloid.

It's a surprisingly influential newspaper given what it is simply because the people who read it, being Londoners, are influential. It's not really noted for its fine investigative reporting or superior standards of journalism: it's what you read on the tube on the way home. Or in the Rolls Royce on the way home.
