Bird, Lindelof take Clooney to 'Tomorrowland'
NEW YORK - Damon Lindelof figured if movie audiences bought one A-list actor doing a hit movie based on a Disney theme-park ride, they might buy another.
Tomorrowland developed out of the success of Johnny Depp's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and when it arrives in theaters May 22, 2015, it promises a lot of George Clooney and a futuristic fantasy landscape.
"The movie is called Tomorrowland and obviously it owes the audience a fair amount of Tomorrowland," says Lindelof, the Lost co-creator who's a producer and co-writer on the Disney film. "But the way that we represent that is to ground the movie as much in the real world as possible.
"One of the great things about fantastical movies is it's all about the journey to get somewhere and we wanted it to be really hard."
Lindelof, Clooney and director Brad Bird (The Incredibles) were among the principals who gave a first look at their retro sci-fi flick to a raucous crowd at New York Comic Con Thursday.
The ultra-secretive project didn't spill much but at least gave fans a sense of what the story is: Young Casey Newton (Britt Robertson) is a troubled girl who happens upon a strange little pin with a "T" on it. When she touches it, she gets flashed into somewhere very different than her own existence.
To learn more, she seeks out Frank Walker (Clooney), a genius inventor who's become a hermit keeping himself locked away from the rest of the world — though he has a bank of monitors watching various parts of Earth seemingly waiting for something.
"He's prepared his house for the ultimate 'I'm not going down without a fight' (scenario)," says Bird in a joint interview with Lindelof following the NYCC presentation.
Casey and Frank end up teaming up to tackle the mysteries of this far-away land as well as avoid those who wish to keep it secret, though the twosome has very little in common on the surface.
"She's young, fresh and outgoing — he's closed up," Bird says. "His house, you can't see in any of the windows. It's like a guy who's saying 'Go away!' — even the door says, 'Go away!'
"When she turns the tables on him, underneath about six layers of (mad) older guy who doesn't want to be bothered is a little bit of respect and a little bit of 'I know that.' "
Bird feels Clooney (who took a break from his honeymoon to visit his first comic convention) is great at bringing various dimensions to his characters, but also "people feel his integrity — that he really feels and genuinely cares about his principles and he's willing to sacrifice for them."
The director remembers reading years ago when Clooney had become a big movie star and everyone figured he'd say goodbye to TV and his stint on ER, instead the actor honored his agreement and finished out his contract.
"He pointed out that that's just what you do," Bird says. "And people feel that from George. He genuinely cares and thinks about it. That comes with him.
"This character also had some deeply held beliefs, and some of them he's felt have been violated and he's withdrawing."
Lindelof figures Tomorrowland is a road movie with the two main characters in many ways: "It bips and bobs," and it weaves through locales that are geographically and potentially interdimensionally different as well as over a period of time. "The movie is not just fixed in the modern day — there's storytelling from the past and presumably the future to some degree."
Clooney and co-star Hugh Laurie both pointed out during the panel how large the film is in scope, but what Lindelof loves it's scaled very intimately.
He likens Tomorrowland to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which is a "very personal story where the biggest thing to ever happen to mankind is about to happen, but it's all being told through the point of view of this electrician who's a normal guy trying to figure out whether to take his kids to putt-putt or Pinocchio.
"Suddenly everything that he felt like he wanted and needed and yearned for in his life changes in an instant based on this one night."
Bird says both he and Lindelof grew up on movies like Close Encounters, and with Tomorrowland, "the child inside both of us is very much alive and kicking and fed daily. Sugar. Artificially colored breakfast cereals, big heaping bowls."

On Wednesday, we hit you with a first look at Disney’s Tomorrowland, and now we’re venturing even deeper into this realm of science and technology via the film’s teaser Trailer.
The story from filmmaker Brad Bird follows teenager Casey Newton (Under the Dome’s Britt Robertson) on a quest to find this hidden place and uncover why it’s being kept secret in the first place. One man who knows some of the answers is an exile of Tomorrowland, a grizzled former “boy genius” played by George Clooney
“Frank Walker is someone who knows how to get there, and it wouldn’t be a good movie if he weren’t somewhat resistant to that idea,” says screenwriter Damon Lindelof, who created the story with EW‘s own Lost chronicler and TV critic Jeff “Doc” Jensen. “Age will make you a little more cynical, a little more of a curmudgeon. Something happened to him. So how did this young idealistic kid become someone who is world-weary and borderline antagonistic about the future? He’s a very grumpy Obi-Wan Kenobi character—minus the beard.”
Among the other characters encountered on the journey:
• Judy Greer and Tim McGraw as the girl’s mother and father, and child actor Pierce Gagnon (best known for Looper) as her little brother. “They are a very loving nuclear family there in Florida at Cape Canaveral,” Lindelof says.
• Kathryn Hahn and Keegan-Michael Key as the eccentric couple Ursula and Hugo Gernsbach. “The two of them are proprietors of a curio nostalgia store called Blast From the Past, and they hold key information about this pin and its origins,” Lindelof says. “The entire movie was just a Trojan horse to get a store called Blast From the Past built, so I can go buy things there.”
• Hugh Laurie as David Nix, a scientific rival to Clooney’s character. “We don’t want to say too much about him. He either is, or believes himself to be, the smartest person in a movie full of incredibly smart people. He has a complicated and fascinating past with Frank,” Lindelof says. So … he’s the villain? “If you were to ask him if he was the hero or the villain of the movie, he would smile and say, ‘The hero, of course’—and then he would kill a cat.”
Pay close attention to the chaos and rioting Casey’s character sees on TV at the beginning of the trailer. Every big scientific discovery has the potential to either save the world, or be used to destroy it.
That may be why those major pioneering discoveries are often kept secret—and could explain why not everyone is allowed to know or see Tomorrowland. “Something has happened in this place. Just the idea that it’s being kept secret is a big deal,” Lindelof says. “Determining why it’s been kept a secret, and why is Frank Walker living here instead of there, is all in the spine of our adventure.”

Really looking forward to seeing this movie, more so than ever. It sounds intriguing and amazing. So I hope it truly is. There is so much of this movie shrouded in secrecy people will be disappointed if it doesn't live up to its expectations. And I do want George to shine in this one.

George Clooney's latest movie, inspired by the famous section of Disney parks, is reportedly the Harry Potter of science!
Which makes it sound SUPER cool!
The sci-fi/fantasy adventure, which is the brain child of director Brad Bird, who wrote the movie with Damon Lindelof, sounds like it's going to be one heck of a film!
Damon revealed why they believe the film captures a Harry Potter-like mysticism!
He said:
'What Hogwarts is to magic, Tomorrowland is to science: They are both easy to find if you are a wizard and very difficult to find if you're a Muggle. Walt Disney is not a character in our movie, but he is referenced as having some involvement in this mysterious place called Tomorrowland, as a huge futurist and aficionado of space travel, rocketry, cities of the future, and space travel.'

There is a piece of technology in this pin, it's the kind of old-school pin you would wear on your lapel, and when you make physical contact with it, you have the illusion of being physically transported to another world, and that's how Casey gets her first glimpse of Tomorrowland.
She is a Muggle who accidentally wanders across Platform 9 ¾ and sees something she probably shouldn't have.'

Why ‘Tomorrowland’ Won’t Be Like Every Other Summer Movie
Sequels not guaranteed.
Most big-budget studio movies need two things: name recognition and franchise potential. This is why we have films based on board games and way too many sequels.
But for “Tomorrowland,” writer Damon Lindelof knew that he had to work with Disney within those constraints without succumbing to their worst tendencies, and that means good things for all of us.
“It’s always a degree of hubris to say that we’re launching a franchise, and the reality is I think Disney was looking for some of sort name recognition,” he told us on the red carpet after “Tomorrowland’s” big NYCC unveiling.
To get Disney executives interested, Lindelof needed to work with something that moviegoers would already be familiar with, but to do so without trapping himself and director Brad Bird narratively. The Tomorrowland attractions in Disney theme parks were the perfect solution.
“‘Tomorrowland’ is just a word. There’s no story behind it,” Lindelof said. “When you walk around Disneyland or Disney World in Tomorrowland, there’s Space Mountain, but there’s no real story behind that. We could do anything that we wanted to, and you would feel that we were inside the Disney family.”
As for the sequelitis, Lindelof and Bird decided that the scale of the world would provide follow-up possibilities and that those didn’t need to be built into the story unnecessarily.
“I think when we sat down, [we] said we’re not going to do those things in movies where we’re setting up the guy who would be the bad guy in the second movie, or ends in a way that feels slightly unresolved,” Lindelof said. “This is going to be a movie that has a beginning, middle and end. If it works really well, there are always more stories to tell in that realm. I don’t think we sat down and said, ‘It’s the first movie in a planned trilogy or quadrilogy.’”

The latest issue of Empire Magazine is out in the UK, and it contains a feature story on TOMORROWLAND.

The movie kicks off when teenage tearaway Casey (Robertson) finds a pin among her personal possessions at a police station. When touched, it briefly transports Casey to the plane of existence on which Tomorrowland dwells. "The Pin is the conduit," explains Lindelof. "You will get a vision of Tomorrowland for a very brief time. And unfortunatley ..." "The first one's free, kid," concludes Bird. "And once you glimpse it, what do you do with that? You have an experience and you're driven to act on the experience."
This description is particularly significant to us, considering the events of The Optimist ARG that lead to our creation of this site. I can't help but draw a comparison between Casey's introduction to the pin and her subsequent glimpse of Tomorrowland, and our own adventure which earned us the pin and introduced us to the story world of this film. We'll talk more about that parallel in an upcoming feature.

When touched, it briefly transports Casey to the plane of existence on which Tomorrowland dwells. "The Pin is the conduit," explains Lindelof. "You will get a vision of Tomorrowland for a very brief time. And unfortunatley ..." "The first one's free, kid," concludes Bird. "And once you glimpse it, what do you do with that? You have an experience and you're driven to act on the experience."
This description is particularly significant to us, considering the events of The Optimist ARG that lead to our creation of this site. I can't help but draw a comparison between Casey's introduction to the pin and her subsequent glimpse of Tomorrowland, and our own adventure which earned us the pin and introduced us to the story world of this film. We'll talk more about that parallel in an upcoming feature.
The article also features the first image released from the NYCC exclusive footage: Casey presenting her Pin to a security camera.
