Who is the Real Amal Alamuddin?

After five days in Venice chasing after George Clooney and his bride Amal Alamuddin, I am finally back in Rome.  I had a blast covering this story because it was completely different from most of the work I do for AP Television.  Let’s just say that chasing after Clooney in a water taxi in Venice is a little different from covering the Pope, or Berlusconi, or destitute migrants arriving on Italian shores.  It was frivolous and fun. Coming home to Rome on the train from Venice with my colleague AP television producer Annalisa Camilli, we were trying to figure out who is the real Amal Alamuddin.  The woman we saw in Venice looked like a beautiful Barbie doll hanging on the arm of a famous We thought George Clooney wanted to marry Amal, instead of his long train of former waitresses and show-girls, because he wanted someone smart who could share his political passions.  Is Clooney shaping her into something else?

ts every few hours as far as we could tell.  She never spoke, she just smiled behind her large sunglasses and flashed her rings.  Long legs and big diamonds were on display, not the brains and grit she must have.

Where did the top-notch human rights lawyer who defended Julian Assange from extradition to Sweden go?  Where was the woman who worked with former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan investigating the use of drones in counter-terrorism operations?  Where was the woman who wrote this article for the Huffington Post on The Anatomy of an Unfair Trial. ?  This is the same woman who clerked for Sonia Sotomayor when she was a judge at the US Court of Appeals in New York.  Amal Alamuddin went to Oxford and then studied law at NYU. This is the Amal Alamuddin I am rooting for.

Which leads me to the next question.  Why did George Clooney decide to have such an open, spectacle, show of a wedding?  At moments – as 30 boats raced down the Grand Canal following his water taxi— it felt more like a scene from a film than real life.  He easily could have done a more private wedding at his Villa on Lake Como. While we were there in Venice, enough information came out about the timing and events, that we knew where to go to get the shots of the couple.  So why did Clooney want to have a very public event? There have been rumors about Clooney wanting to get into politics.  I mentioned this is an earlier post, but what does he want to do, run for governor of California, or perhaps Senator?  Maybe he wants to get involved with the UN in some way.  Honestly, I have no clue. I am hoping that that Amal Alamuddin does not give up her work and get sucked into being a pretty arm decoration for George.  As far as I know she has never given any interviews since her engagement and I am dying to hear what she says about herself and her future.  There were reports in the British press that George was looking for an apartment in London so that she could continue to work.  That would be wonderful as far as I am concerned.

George has no political aspirations but I guess since he said he'd never marry they're trying to pull a pig out of a poke and are extrapolating that now he will have aspirations.

I think George is too smart to go into politics and he's knows his life prior to Amal will cream him royally so he really has no chance.

As to who is the real Amal.  Wow, if the gal speaks there are negative comments.  If the gal doesn't speak there are negative comments.

Me, if I were having a wedding in Venice, the only thing on my mind would be THE WEDDING not giving speeches about the dire straits of people all over the world.

I'd just for once, want to have FUN.

There is plenty of time for Amal to speak.  But frankly, this gal's comment that she should have given interviews since her engagement is banal.  Why the fuck would Amal need to give interviews about her engagment or the wedding or anything related to HER day?

Geesh.  The stuff that comes out of reporters mouths is often mind-boggling.

We've got tons of pictures!  I'm happy about that.  If Amal chose to concentrate on her dress and the cake and her first dance and where they'll be honeymooning and the gift for their guests and what they'll eat at the wedding and NOT sit with reporters and give a blow by blow description of what she will be doing then who's business is it anyway?

Oh, good grief. What was she supposed to do on her wedding weekend, don a powdered wig and robe, and orate a closing argument from the back of a water taxi, just to remind us all she's a high-powered attorney?

As far as the question in the post title, I think it's extremely telling that we have yet to hear a negative word about her from anyone who knows her.  No disgruntled colleagues, no former friends from college, no exes - so far everyone with personal knowledge only give glowing reviews, and you know there's money in the opposite.  Anyone with a nasty story about George Clooney's fiancee/wife could make a quick buck from TMZ.  Still nothing.  IMO, that says a lot about who she really is.

way2, just picturing the scene makes me laugh! I think George would must be pretending writing his script and thinking "oh honey please stop working on your cases, I'm George Clooney and I just have to get married like a Hollywood royalty!"

Oh, I'm sure she was aware of what MIGHT happen.....and possibly Florence was a sort of rehearsal. And His Nibs was reported to have said that he'd marry her tomorrow, but he wanted to give her the wedding that she wanted.......

Anyone who is any doubt of her abilities should really look at her public interviews and writing......Don't see her or any of her friends contacting TMZ any time soon.

As a matter of interest, do we see Julianna Margulies husband giving juicy quotes to the tabloids on the red carpet? Of course not!

Yep, Jo, and she was really useful yesterday - but I'm not sure she's done her homework enough to form an opinion.......and we don't know whether her sub editor has asked her to angle the story for its demographic.

Even journalists with scientific degrees have been asked to do this sort of stuff for the target audience. Very sad, but true

I think this article was meant more as an observation rather than as criticism. Perhaps once the writer had time to digest the wedding she realised she didn't really know much about Amal and what she did know of her (high powered lawyer etc) understandably wasn't on show that weekend.

I am one who has wanted to hear something from her. To get a sense of her. I'm intrigued to know her personality. Except for certain posters on this site and another unnamed Clooney fan forum I've heard absolutely nothing negative about this woman. She gets glowing compliments from all who know her and have worked for her. I suspect when George met her, a part from her beauty , he must have been blown away by her brilliance. Mozzarella girl (whoever) obviously doesn't realize her wedding is not the place to be coming out to give interviews or talking to the press. For that matter, neither did George. It was a private celebration in which G&A generously let us partake in just a bit of their happiness.

I'm wondering how she's going to balance her very demanding career and being the wife of a famous actor. I'm curious to see what she's going to do. But I don't see her giving any interviews about her personal life. She's too private I think. I'm curious to see what their marriage is going to be like... Smile

I hope she sticks to her guns as far as her career goes and being her own person.  Being a "fashionista" or occasional "arm candy" is OK as long as you've got something else going on in your life.  Seems very similar to the path some of the previous girlfriends have taken, like Stacy and EC suddenly popping up at runway shows.  I am still waiting it out to see if George will change his behavior/life style much or make any genuine sacrifices (except presumably sexual exclusivity).  They did look very happy over the weekend.  The wedding is the easy part.  The marriage is the real work.

What a stupid article.
What she was supposed to do? Talking with paps about Assange and UN just to prove us that she's smart and accomplished barrister?

She won't leave her job. She's been trough a lot to be where she is now, I can't see her trow it all because of George, I can't see him asked her to leave her job.

So many media types make these quick judgments about people, they really don't know. Make insinuating comments. What really annoys me is reading since this wedding that G&A are the next Jack and Jackie Kennedy. I've seen that assertion on a few sites. It's ludicrous. That rumor earlier this summer that George might get into politics I'm sure fed these new assertions. Not only does it stir the pot with those naysayers who think G&A are actually trying to portray that image but I'm sure George would find the comparison completely outrageous.

I think George has great admiration and respect for all the Kennedy's, as a good liberal should. I think he would find the comparison or the idea that he was trying to reform his image into that of JFK so ridiculous and off putting ... and an insult to Kennedy's legacy. I think it's a cheap tactic on the part of some media outlets.

The media though make the comparison when suggesting that George may have political aspirations. I think it definitely feeds the naysayers belief that George is an opportunist. I know better, but George haters feed on this stuff. What the hell, I just don't like it.

I agree JMK. Who knows. I could imagine that G&A have maybe talked about joining forces on the humanitarian front to start some new endeavor which she would head up. She's an excellent writer too and spoken at colleges. I think there many different avenues she could take if she wants to move on from doing straight legal work.

Who is Amal Alamuddin?

So here’s what’s been coming up a lot in my inbox about Amal Alamuddin after the weekend wedding Spectacular! Spectacular!

1.She loves the attention, therefore she must be a limelight-hogger

2.If she’s a limelight-hogger, she can’t do her job.

3.When is she doing her job?

Amal Alamuddin’s credentials speak for themselves. She speaks several different languages. She’s the UN’s go-to on a number of pressing human rights issues. She’s widely regarded in her field.

So…why would you doubt her ability to do her job just because she was planning a wedding? You don’t think that a woman with her education and experience could write her papers and consult with her clients and pick some dresses and hang out with her fiancé now husband at the time? Isn’t that… insulting?

George Clooney once said that fame arrests at the age it arrives. If you’re 16 when you get famous, you’ll stay 16 forever. He also once told Ben Mulroney on etalk that if he’d broken out when he was in his teens, he’d probably be shooting crack into his eyes, that’s how f-cked up it would be. And the point is that when he actually became a celebrity, he was well into his 30s, equipped with many of the skills he’d need to navigate that reality.

The same could apply now to his wife. She’s 36 years old. She’s a fully formed person. She’s mature, she’d confident, she’s informed.

She knows herself.

And I think we saw that on the water in Venice this weekend. We saw a woman getting married, knowing that she had the world’s attention, and not letting it mess with her head. She waved, she smiled, she didn’t wig out, she didn’t cry, she was excited, she was poised, she was graceful, she was gracious.

What is the problem?

PEOPLE has released some of the wedding details in their online report and what I find interesting were the comments from their parents. This is what Nick Clooney said at the event:

"George and Amal present us with ... belief that in this place and at this moment, love is alive and well."

And this is the quote that they chose to share from Amal’s mother:

“George, we love you truly, deeply and sincerely. We enjoy your charm, your wit, intelligent conversation and generosity. You are simply perfect."

It was like…she was telling him he was good enough for Amal. Like they, the Alamuddins, are the ones who have to be earned. Because their daughter is the actual star in this relationship.

She is a star.

And that’s where we bring it back to the idea of her being a limelight-hogger. Sure. I don’t disagree with you there. Not because I think she’s Mrs Timberlake but because Amal Alamuddin is a barrister. In the movies, they take some creative licence in courtroom depictions, fine, but come on, isn’t a barrister somewhat of a performer? Isn’t a barrister the person with the spotlight on that particular stage delivering a set of lines?

Amal’s lines are exponentially more important than the lines that are delivered from an actor, but here’s a woman who understands the power of a well-executed argument, the consequence of a poorly stated position, someone who very much appreciates the impact of an inspiring monologue – in her case, actual lives hang in the balance. She has to know her sh-t backwards and forwards, she has to have that research picked apart and put back together.

But she also HAS TO SELL IT.

That’s what great lawyers do. They sell. Just like great actors.

So, maybe that comfort that you’re seeing from her in being the centre of attention isn’t so much a hunger for celebrity than it is another example of how she’s just really good at her job.

I think she thinks she is the star and better than george. He is the actor and star and they both share the spotlight. But her education and degrees are quite impressive and I am not sure if George has a degree in college but heis a great director, actor, and producer. I think she will out shine him, and he will have to compete with her always. They should be equal but in this marriage they are not. Be careful george, she will always try to be above you and you are the underdog. this is my opinion. bg

Doesn't work like that, Doris. If she was papped, then that pap has to sell the shot to someone who may or may not want it.......editors would make that call, and may or may decide that it's overkill, or respect a degree of privacy. They knew for months where she lived, but there is a code of practice on that sort of thing in the UK, thank goodness.

The Pitt/Jolies have lived here for months/years, but the Press don't publish anything much, apart from the odd shopping trip with the children or at airports

She'll only get papped if a paparazzi is around to take her picture. If they're flying private jet then it's very possible not to have been photographed and the story was simply called in by someone working at the airport who's on the payroll. If the story's true of course.

Come on guys, what's this nonsense about how they can't go anywhere without being photographed? We already know that George travels the world without being spotted sometimes.

Yes they can travel without being photographed but the first pics of her returning to work after the wedding would be worth some money. I don't think she's at work, I think they are honeymooning. LAX has paps hanging around 24/7 waiting to photograph celebs of any level, I'm sure other airports have the same.
