George wasn't really mad - it was a  bit planned in advance with hosts Alec Baldwin & Steve Martin. For a recap:

George Clooney and Elisabetta Canalis pose at the 82nd Academy Awards. The actor was reportedly playing a joke with Alec Baldwin when he looked angry during the Oscars ceremony.


By George! Mr. Clooney shocked many an Oscar viewer Sunday night when he was seemingly unamused by hosts Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin's repeated digs at him. But a source close to the "Up in the Air" actor tells us that he was playing along, too.
"It was something George and Alec agreed upon," says the insider, adding that when the cameras weren't on Clooney, he and the "30 Rock" actor were making faces at each other. "It was a 'follow-my-lead' sort of thing."
The same can't be said for Sean Penn, who by all accounts wasn't making any sort of joke when he presented the award for Best Actress and made a bizarre speech.
"I never became an official member of the academy, but the academy and I do have in common that we neglected to acknowledge the same actress in our own ways two years running," he said to a silent crowd.
Word surfaced Monday that he was alluding to his soon-to-be ex-wife Robin Wright Penn, who was absent from this year's nominations despite her acclaimed role in "The Secret Lives of Pippa Lee."

Yep, it was definitely a bit. George is like the new Jack Nicholson in that way, always sitting in the front row of the Oscars and playing along with the host. Thank goodness his Nicholson-style dating of women half his age is behind him, though.

I never understood why George wore his hair that way for the Oscars. That was the worst look for our debonair man. He said he was growing it out for a role but the way he styled it was awful.

Completely agree! I remember watching the Oscars that year and thinking George looked awful. Still better looking than most men, but not good. I could never figure out what role he needed his hair like that for. He had longer hair in The Descendants but not the disheveled mess he had on his head for most important award show in Hollywood. Maybe he got on set and they said, no George you're not looking like that for this film - ha ha! Oh well, the man is human. Even he has made some missteps.

I get the feeling that this was the Tim period he refers to when he tells the story about how was drinking a little too much and one of the boys pulled him aside to talk to him
about it. I don't think that was a healthy relationship for him.

Missa, I agree. I don't think Elisabetta was good for him. There was definitely passion between the two but she was a party girl and liked drinking. Made it even easier for him to indulge. And on some level I think he was affected by the sense that he knew Jeff Bridges was going to win the best actor that year. For quite some time before Jeff's movie came out There was serious buzz that George would win that award. George has never been a sore loser but I think he might have felt a bit down inside.

But I think the same plot happened for the Descendants...George seemed to have locked the Best Actor until the buzz went up for Jean.

That's true. And George is incredibly gracious and humble when it comes to awards. I just felt that something else was going on with him that night. Maybe not but that hair

The look I can't wrap my head around is the From Dusk Till Dawn Caesar hair. So many of you think it's hot, and I just don't get it.

Anyway, I like the hair of From Dusk..

At most awards the honoree says something sweet to their partner nothing strange about it.  I think he wanted to surprise Amal and let everyone know  how he felt pretty romantic to me.

@JD68, too funny.  the animation inside your post at the top, George's face when angry in the animated photo, looks exactly like his "loved up" face in your avatar, or  was him angry having his picture taken y-e-t again at that dinner. Was that intentional - by you?

Ah I read it, but I remember him talking, in the article, about Matt who, in a party attended some day before the interview, told him that he was drinking too much. 
I don't think that he mentions the boys or a party at the time of Eli, but maybe I don't remember very well..
