Amnesty International calls a Sudan court's death sentence for a Christian woman abhorrent
The Christian woman sentenced to death by a Sudan court had been given several days to renounce her faith

A pregnant Sudanese woman who refused to renounce her Christianity was sentenced to death by hanging Thursday in a Khartoum court, provoking outrage from human rights groups.
Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, who has a young son and is married to a Christian from South Sudan, violated Islamic sharia law, the court said. She insists she was raised Christian, not Muslim.
The court also ordered Ibrahim to be flogged for having sexual relations with her husband, since her marriage is not recognized by officials.

Ibrahim refused a court order Sunday giving her several days to renounce her Christian faith, which resulted in the sentencing Thursday.
Amnesty International issued a statement describing the sentence as abhorrent and called for Ibrahim's release.
"The fact that a woman has been sentenced to death for her religious choice, and to flogging for being married to a man of an allegedly different religion is appalling and abhorrent," said Manar Idriss, Amnesty International's Sudan researcher.

"Adultery and apostasy are acts which should not be considered crimes at all. It is flagrant breach of international human rights law," Idriss said in the statement. "The right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, which includes the freedom to hold beliefs, is far-reaching and profound; it encompasses freedom of thought on all matters, personal conviction and the commitment to religion or belief."

It is flagrant breach of international human rights law.- Manar Idriss, Amnesty International's Sudan researcher

Ibrahim was charged after being reported to authorities last year by a member of her family because of her marriage to a Christian, according to her supporters. In February, the court added a charge of apostasy based on her 2012 marriage in a Christian church and the fact that she insisted in court that she was Christian.

Her mother, an Orthodox Ethiopian Christian, married a Sudanese Muslim who was never at home as Ibrahim grew up, according to the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa, a network of 80 civil society women's organizations based in Khartoum.

Ibrahim, currently jailed with her son, will be allowed to give birth and raise her second child until the age of 2 years but then faces execution. Sudanese authorities refuse to allow Ibrahim's son to reside with her husband because the husband is Christian.

SIHA has called for an urgent global campaign by activists to pressure Sudanese authorities over Ibrahim's death sentence. Two witnesses testified in court that they had seen Ibrahim pray in a Christian church in the past, the group said.

"Sudan’s legal system has often displayed a pattern of selective enforcement of the law and has frequently singled out women, ethnic minorities, and activists with punishments often disproportionate to alleged crimes committed," a SIHA statement said. "The fact that Meriam stands to lose her life over specious charges makes this case of utmost urgency and demands a unified advocacy and outreach efforts by human rights defenders across the globe.''

Anyone claiming the name of the Lord have been hunted for believing in HIM
since the beginning of time till these modern days. Satan will not stop till this
world is run by his standards.

The only way to stop these atrocities is for the world to claim the name of the Lord,
and this will not ever happen. We are too vain to give up our secret sins.

We can't not serve two gods. And until then, these type of demonic behaviors will
not stop.

That's so cruel.....I hope she gets free.

You know I wonder why George didn't comment on that. I know he can not comment on everything but he wore a T shirt for this Ukraine woman and send a video message out. And the Ukraine wasn't even his project but the Sudan is his project. It would get more attention if he would comment on. But I understand if he doesn't.

Mm, well, we don't know what everyone's doing behind the scenes.......

To be honest, when I read about the lashes business, I thought that might be the Sudanese Government's opt-out clause - so that if her death was stopped thro' diplomatic pressure, she would still be punished........

A Pakistani pregnant woman was just killed by her own family because she married a man she loved, apparently in that area you don't marry for love. She went to the court house after her family claimed her husband had kidnapped her, she only went there to verify that she did indeed marry him and her family killed her in front of everyone including the police!! Such madness I cannot begin to understand.

Looks like the media attention helped

Sudanese woman facing 'barbaric' death sentence for marrying a Christian will be FREED... but her lawyer says 'I'll believe it when I see it'

Hopes were raised last night that the Sudanese woman facing the death penalty for ‘abandoning her Islamic faith’ is to be released.

Meriam Ibrahim, who gave birth to a daughter in her prison cell  last week, has been sentenced to  100 lashes and death by hanging after a Sharia court convicted her for converting to Christianity, and ‘adultery’ because she had wed  a non-Muslim.

Britain’s Foreign Office has joined an international outcry to persuade the Sudanese government to spare Ms Ibrahim – and last night an  official in the country suggested she would soon be released.

Authorities in the country are working out a way to free her which will be consistent with the country's laws, according to Foreign Ministry under-secretary Abdelah Al-Azrak.
He said: 'The related authorities in the country are working to release Mariam (sic) who was sentenced to death for apostasy, through legal measures. I expect her to be released soon'.

President Omar al-Bashir, who has imposed Islamic law on Sudan, has come under increasing pressure since the sentencing of Ms Ibrahim, 27, for apostasy on May 15.

MailOnline has led the way revealing Mrs Ibrahim's shocking treatment.
In the past week we revealed how she gave birth while still in shackles inside her squalid prison, and reported on the heartbreak, angst and pride of her husband while she faced her ordeal behind bars.

We also highlighted a petition for her release, organised by Amnesty International, which was signed by 750,000 people.
After the horrifying details came to light, David Cameron described her treatment as 'barbaric' and said it has 'no place in today's world'.

Former PM Tony Blair described the case as a 'brutal and sickening distortion of faith'.
However, Mrs Ibrahim's lawyers said they do not believe the offer is genuine, and is a ploy to silence the growing outcry.

Elshareef Ali Mohammed, one of her legal team, told the Telegraph: 'It's to silence the international media. This is what the government do. We will not believe that she is being freed until she walks out of the prison'.

Mrs Ibrahim,a qualified doctor, was thrown in jail in September and earlier this month was sentenced to death for apostasy and adultery for marrying Daniel Wani, a Christian Sudanese man with U.S. citizenship who lives in Manchester, New Hampshire.

She was also sentenced to 100 lashes as the Sudanese court operating under strict Shariah law refused to recognize her 2011 marriage because her father was a Muslim.

The judge ruled that even though Meriam’s father left her family when she was six and she was raised as a Christian, she should still worship Islam.

Her Christian marriage was annulled and she was sentenced to 100 lashes for adultery and death by hanging for renouncing Islam.
Sex outside a 'lawful relationship' is regarded as adultery under Sudanese law.

The case prompted questions over whether the UK should continue giving aid to countries which do not respect human rights.
Conservative North Somerset MP Liam Fox, the former defence secretary and shadow foreign secretary, said: 'We need to ask ourselves whether it is acceptable too be giving taxpayers' money in aid to states which allow treatment such as that handed out to Meriam Ibrahim.'
Mrs Ibrahim's husband Mr Wani said his son has become sullen and withdrawn since being incarcerated with his mother.
He added that his wife was under pressure to convert so she can leave prison but that she was 'committed' to her right to religious freedom.

Earlier this week Meriam gave birth to baby Maya whilst inside the jail where her son Martin, 20 months, has been staying with her.
Despite this, she will be given her 100 lashes in just two weeks’ time unless her appeal is a success.
Mr Wani said: 'They say the marriage is void. Now, even my wife is no longer my wife. And my son is not mine and my new daughter is not mine. They say I am a stranger to them.
‘I know my wife puts on a brave face but I can tell that she is  in quite a bit of pain. To see her walking in chains is difficult.’

He said his wife insisted she had always been a Christian and could not ‘pretend to be a Muslim’ just to spare her life.
She told him: ‘I refuse to change. I am not giving up Christianity just so that I can live. If they want to execute me then they should go ahead and do it because I’m not going to change my faith.

‘I know I could stay alive by becoming a Muslim and I would be able to look after our family, but I need to be true to myself.’

Mr Wani added: ‘My wife is very strong. She is stronger than me.
‘When they sentenced her to death I broke down and tears were streaming down my eyes. Our lawyers were passing me tissues.
‘But she stayed strong. She did not flinch when she was sentenced. It was amazing to see, particularly because she is the one facing the death penalty.’
Anger has been growing in the U.S. and her case was raised at a meeting of the Homeland Security Department Oversight Committee by Rep Trent Franks, R-Arizona.

He said: ‘Both of these children (Martin and Maya) are eligible for U.S. citizenship.

‘This case has become so high profile that many of us are deeply concerned about Meriam’s safety in Sudan especially if she wins her appeal and is released back into Sudanese society at large.

‘Will you assure this committee you will prioritize this case and quickly review the possibility of granting Meriam a safe haven to the United States?’
In response Jeh Johnson, the secretary of Homeland Security said: ‘I will personally take a look at this case, it sounds troubling’.

Senator Kelly Ayotte, a New Hampshire Republican, said today that she has made another plea for help with Meriam’s case.

Her spokesman said: ‘Senator Ayotte spoke directly with the State Department’s Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan today to reiterate her call for the U.S. government to offer Meriam Ibrahim political asylum and to use all diplomatic measures to secure her safe release.

‘The Senator’s staff has been in touch with Daniel Wani regarding the family’s situation and to offer assistance, and our office continues to be in contact with the State Department and Department of Homeland Security regarding what actions can be taken to try to secure Meriam’s and her children’s safe release from prison.’
Kate Allen, director of Amnesty UK, said: ‘The way Meriam has been treated has appalled the world. Millions of people across the world are outraged by her treatment.
'Condemned to death, separated from her husband and now with two infant children imprisoned with her – it’s the stuff of nightmares.’
Human Rights Watch said the case was ‘like an incident out of the Dark Ages’.
In the meantime, Mia Farrow urged her 490,000 Twitter followers to call the Sudanese embassies in the U.S. and the UK and Tweeted out their phone numbers.

She said that embassy staff ‘will brush you off but the calls are counted. Bombard them with phone calls’.

Farrow wrote: ‘Meriam Ibrahim must not be flogged & hanged for refusing to renounce Christianity’.

In a statement she added: ‘Meriam Ibrahim has committed no crime and what is being done to her is beyond abhorrent.

‘It is inhumane. The Sudanese government should uphold their duty to protect a mother and child’.

Hillary Clinton said in her statement: ‘Meriam Ibrahim’s death sentence is abhorrent. Sudan should stop threatening religious freedom and fundamental human rights’.
'The right to religious freedom is an inalienable human right, and an essential expression of our human nature,' said Trudie Styler.
We call on the Sudanese government to halt this terrible treatment of Meriam, Martin and Maya and to release them immediately. We urge the US government to help this family so that they can be reunited.'

In the UK Justine Greening, the UK international development minister, tweeted: ‘Sudan must not allow the execution of Meriam Ibrahim to go ahead. #SaveMeriam’.

The archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said: ‘I wholeheartedly endorse this call for the death sentence to be dropped’

The UK Foreign Office has also summoned the Sudanese charge d'affaires to voice its anger over the sentence.

Mr Wani has been highly critical of the response of the U.S. embassy in Sudan and claimed that he was given no help until his wife’s story became an international row.
His brother Gabriel, who also lives in New Hampshire, has claimed that Mr Wani went to the embassy in Khartoum three times and was told each time that the American ambassador was ‘too busy’ to see him.
Mr Wani, who has muscular dystrophy and is in a wheelchair, has also been offended that he could have to submit to a DNA test to prove that Martin is his.

Martin was born in Sudan and may be entitled to U.S. citizenship because Mr Wani is a naturalized American, though the process is complicated and not certain.

The same applies to Maya too and she could potentially become an American.
Tonight the Foreign Office responded to the reports, saying it is 'urgently seeking clarification' as to whether Mrs Ibrahim will be released.
'We are aware of and urgently seeking clarification from the Sudanese authorities of reports that Meriam Ibrahim, the mother facing the death penalty in Sudan, is to be freed.
'We have been strongly urging the Government of the Republic of Sudan to do all it can to overturn its decision to sentence her to death'.

MailOnline has contacted the Sudanese embassy for comment.
