George Clooney Responds to Sudan Crisis in Vice News Op-Ed

In anticipation of the season two finale of HBO’s news magazine “Vice,” George Clooney and Satellite Sentinel Project co-founder John Prendergast have penned an op-ed piece on the situation in Sudan that went live on the Vice News site Wednesday morning.

The finale follows host Ben Anderson as he travels to Sudan to see how conditions have worsened for the displaced.

In their op-ed, Clooney and Prendergast lament this humanitarian crisis and the fact that 2.5 million people have been killed in various conflicts in Sudan over the last 20 years, something Clooney has been vocal about in the past.

The two also explain that the findings of their Satellite Sentinel Project, a non-profit aimed at preventing mass atrocities, have often been overlooked or intentionally brushed aside.

“Sudan’s Air Force has acquired more accurate bomber planes and more destructive bombs to intensify its aerial assault against civilian targets in the war zones, in total defiance of feckless UN Security Council resolutions,” the piece reads. “Our Satellite Sentinel Project captures frequent satellite imagery of communities leveled by bombing raids. So far, that evidence has been ignored.”

While the majority of the article addresses the current conditions, the lack of attention the Sudanese have received and what needs to be done, Clooney and Prendergast also remain hopeful, citing the work of the Clinton Administration to impose UN Security Council sanctions on Sudan in 1995 for its role in international terrorism.

“The situation may sound hopeless — but that is not the case,” they write. “This is a crisis America can help resolve. On a number of past occasions, the US has used its influence to bring about positive outcomes in Sudan.

Clooney and Prendergast also penned an op-ed for the Daily Beast in December to address similar concerns.

A portion of the upcoming episode of “Vice,” titled “The Forgotten War,” will address the current situation and level of violence in Sudan.

The series was recently renewed for two more seasons, slated to air in 2015 and 2016.

The season two finale of “Vice” airs June 13.

George Clooney Pens Sudan Plea Pegged to HBO's 'Vice' Season Finale

The filmmaker-activist and John Prendergast co-author an op-ed lamenting the lack of media coverage for the more than 2.5 million who've died in the African republic during the last two decades: "The spotlight is fickle -- we're already seeing that with Syria."

George Clooney, an outspoken activist on the issue of genocide in Sudan, has issued another missive in his attempts to increase attention on the African country's humanitarian crisis. The filmmaker and Satellite Sentinel Project co-founder John Prendergast penned an op-ed for Vice

Friday's episode of Vice, its second-season finale, follows journalist Ben Anderson as he's embedded in Sudan, exposing the lingering crisis as media attention and international efforts have drifted elsewhere.
It's that lack of attention with which Clooney and Prendergast take the biggest issue. "The spotlight is fickle -- we're already seeing that with Syria," they write. "Telling people they should care because they cared 10 years ago doesn't work."
This is hardly Clooney's first time speaking out about the more than 2.5 million people killed and 5 million displaced by the various conflicts in Sudan. He and Prendergast penned another op-ed in The Daily Beast in December -- and in his 2012 THR cover story, the actor spoke of being held up at gunpoint in one of his many missions to the region.
Satellite Sentinel Project, which recently announced an expansion of its efforts, is a nonprofit that uses satellite imagery to monitor the violence by Sudan against South Sudan with the hopes of catching early warning signs to deter mass atrocities.
Emmy-nominated Vice, recently renewed for a third and fourth season on HBO, spends half of the upcoming episode, "The Forgotten War," focusing on the rising violence and on how things have changed for those in the Darfur region since war broke out in 2003.

Thanks so much Nicky sorry I have not been doing as much on finding these articles. You are really doing a lot of great work on here. I think your avatar is there because the video is large, I thought it was just my magnification. Thanks again you are much appreciated.

 "feckless UN Security Council resolutions"

That statement may give some insight into his resignation from UN position.

Yes it was somewhat of an honor at the time but I think that you are right, it must be too restricting. Good for George. You see on twitter; how far the story would go without George; many don't even mention John's name. God bless them and all the others that keep trying to get more help.

It's nice to see him getting coverage for something other than the engagement. I hope the coverage continues and a lot of people see the program.

Hi Lizzy do you know what channel we would find it on here in the US, I'm now living in SC? I would like to try and get it. You would think more of these shows would be on the PBS channels where more people would see them.

Mazy - It's on HBO. The channel number depends on which cable network you have. I won't be able to see it because HBO is a premium channel on my provider and I don't subscribe to it - too expensive. Maybe it will turn up on PBS or online after it airs on HBO.
