The Monuments Men - Box Office Empty The Monuments Men - Box Office

Post by ... Sun 09 Feb 2014, 19:26

Opening weekend was successful at domestic box office.
Despite the sporadic review with bias (maybe with an agenda), which bore no influence.
Btw, The Lego Movie did exceptionally well. A different target audience: animation, Lego aficionados, 3D film => #trending

So far,  Friday & Saturday night estimates on the US domestic market for Monuments Men are $22,700,000.

Congratulations!!

The actuals come in on Monday afternoon...it could go up or down slightly at that point...but it is a good start.

From Deadline:

BOX OFFICE: ‘Lego’ Blockbuster $69M+; ‘Monuments Men’ Solid Second; ‘Vampire Academy’ Has No Bite

UPDATED Sunday 8:00 AM: The Lego Movie is in the record books as the biggest animated pic opener of all time for Warner Bros., surpassing Happy Feet which opened to $41.5M in 2006 (and went onto gross $384.3M worldwide). It’s also the biggest opener ever for the studio in February. The final number is hovering around $69.1M and that’s with movie going percentages estimated for Sunday to be off by about 32% so if it does better than that, the number will, of course, rise. Congrats to all – Village Roadshow, Dan Lin of Lin Pictures and Vertigo Ent., filmmakers Chris Miller and Phil Lord – and did we see a shout-out to former WB executive Jeff Robinov (who greenlighted the film) actually in the film? Yep. Classy move, guys. Yes, caught that. “We had an enormous weekend,” said WB distribution head Dan Fellman. “It’s a major franchise for Lego and Warner for years to come. We tried to find a window to introduce the movie which was not a competitive weekend. We took a risk in February and we showed like we did with Gravity that you can open tentpoles in a period of time that might not necessarily be usual and let the content speak for itself.” Amen.

Sony’s The Monuments Men performed slightly better than the early tracking expected going into the weekend and will end up at around $22M+ for filmmaker George Clooney and Columbia Pictures (Sony has it at $22.7M but other distribs have it around $22.1M). “It’s a terrific opening for us. It’s exactly in our sweet spot.” said Rory Bruer, Sony’s president of worldwide distribution. You can’t ask for a better partner than George (Clooney). We expect the film to around for a very long time.” They will need it to be for it to become profitable. The other newcomer, Vampire Academy, which IM Global thru Reliance financed (and TWC provided marketing and distribution costs), failed to draw audiences and only took in around $4M for the three-day. Noteworthy: Frozen passed $900M worldwide after opening in China this weekend, and it just passed Despicable Me 2 to become the third highest grossing domestic animated release of all-time (based on original runs) and highest grossing original (non-sequel) animated release of all-time. Here’s the chart:

1). The Lego Movie (WB) 3,775 theaters / $17.2M Fri. / $30.9M Sat (+80%) / $21.8M Sun. (-30%) / Per screen: $18,569 / Est. 3-day Cume: $69.1M / Wk 1

Nice one PAN...I like your style!  bounce   ahahahaha  cheers

And Congrats to George and Grant on the opening numbers...it's going to keep building momentum!  I can feel it in my bones...

I went to see it today and the worst critic ever (my hub) gave it a two thumbs up...he actually stayed awake too!  The audience was a mixed age group and they were laughing and applauding in all the right places and I heard a lot of positive comments coming out of the theater.   Thumbs up! Oh and needless to say, I LOVED it...no bias either...none at all  Rolling Eyes ....honest!

Sour grapes perhaps Lighterside or a bit of the Tall Poppy Syndrome that we like to say here in Australia - as long as more and more moviegoers and fans see it, then that's all that matters in the end.

And this one is going to be heavily viewed by the Seniors...the theater was filled with them when we went. (I say that like I'm not one of them! LMAO)  And while in line for tickets, it was about half and half between Legos and MM...young families, mostly of course, for Legos and I was pleasantly surprised how many from 20-30 yo range for MM, as well.  There was one group of 20 somethings' walking out talking together about how they really liked it and they actually LEARNED something from it!  I couldn't believe my ears! ahahahahaha

I love your review Lighter... I always think you hear the truth, good or bad when you "overhear" something.... What you overheard the young group say, says it all...the movie hit the target...

Right and he is getting the message out that he wanted to. He is brings much more attention to the subject and in the finding of more missing art. I'm sure he didn't expect the reviews some critics but George must have know the subject matter was going to be a hard sell. The result being this fantastic campaign. xxx

i have seen it and loved it, don't listen to the reviews go and see for yourself, a few times i had tears in my eyes, what was done in that war was unbelievable so sad but this is an amazing story that i have never heard of before and so glad they made it. This isn't a typical war film it does tell a story without a lot of gun fire which i am thankful for.

in George's own words

"It's not about an opening weekend. It's about a career, building a set of films you're proud of. Period."

And I'm sure he's very proud of this film and it's only been out less than a month. I have no doubt that it will make money. But, more than anything, George is proud of it.

Well he should be proud of it we all know only a fraction of what he put into the production; and we saw a lot. I agree I think this is going to turn out to be a very successful movie in all ways not just financially. The reviews keep getting better and better. xxx

So does this mean that it is successful? Box office worldwide (US and Foreign) is

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $58,050,000 68.7%
+ Foreign: $26,400,000 31.3%
= Worldwide: $84,450,000

Not sure I understand the percentages.....and this is still an estimate...actuals are released tomorrow afternoon.

I would say anytime you make 14 million over budget amount, it is a success!

The percentages are the portion of the total for domestic or foreign box office. So 'MM' revenues are about one third foreign and two thirds domestic -- which usually means all of North America, not just the US.

The film had a budget of $70M. They came in $5M under that. At $65M, they'd have to make $130 in order to break cleanly even, if you follow the rule of thumb that P&A (prints and advertising -- the marketing campaign) is about equal to the production budget for big films.

I have no doubt they'll do that. This movie is holding steady, and all they need is a few more weeks of $15-20M box office to get to their mark. I don't know which markets they have left to open, but I think there are a few. If the marketing was less than $60M, everybody will be happy by the ides of March.

No MM has been released in Russia. I read about it last week at Mojo...And it will be opening in China by the end of this month. They haven't decided on a specific date. MM has passed the film censorship officially. That's crucial. So first ever George-directed film opening in China!(Hope it won't be the last one)
I predict Monuments Men will do at least 25M here. A little push to the foreign boxoffice. Laughing

Also holding up well this weekend was Sony's The Monuments Men. The George Clooney directed World War II film was down 37 percent from last weekend to place in fourth with an estimated $5.0 million. The 24-day total gross for The Monuments Men stands at a solid $65.69 million.
