Warner Bros sued for $10 million by author who claims Oscar winning movie Gravity is based on her book of the same name

Author Tess Gerritsen is suing Warner Bros for $10 million over their movie Gravity, according to Deadline.
She claims the Alfonso Cuaron written and directed film is actually based on her book of the same name, despite telling the Banner Graphic newspaper in October: ' Yes, Gravity is a great film, but it is not based on my book.'
It is not clear what brought about the change of heart but Gerritsen has just filed a breach of contract complaint in LA's federal court claimed she is owed a 'Based on the book by' credit, $10 million and damages.
Lawsuit: Author Tess Gerritsen is suing Warner Bros and claiming that the movie Gravity, directed by Alfonso Cuarnon, was based on her book of the same name. She alleges Cuaron was at one stage attached to an in development movie version of her book and there are similarities between the film and tome.
Both focus on a female astronaut (played by Sandra Bullock in the movie) fighting for her life but has the key difference that there is no deadly virus on the International Space Station in the big screen adaptation.
Gerritsen claims she sold the rights to her book in 1999 to New Line Productions but attempts to develop it for the big screen did not work out.
The complaint states: 'To assist in the development of the Gerritsen Gravity Project, Gerritsen wrote and delivered additional material that constituted a modified version of a portion of the Book.
Change of heart: Although Tess claimed last year the movie was not based on her book, she has changed her mind and filed a suit

'The additional material written by Gerritsen included scenes of satellite debris colliding with the International Space Station (“ISS”), the destruction of the ISS, and the surviving female medical doctor/astronaut left drifting in her space suit, alone and untethered, seeking the means to return to earth.'
The respected author has also written the Rizzoli & Isles books which have been developed into a successful TV series by TNT.
Stolen idea? Gerritsen claims the movie Gravity is based on her book of the same name and is suing Warner Bros for $10 million

Doesn´t sound like the movie was based on her book. Why would they leave the most interesting parts out? Never heard of this author and not my genre, but from the synopsis and seeing Gravity I would think so.

"Change of heart: Although Tess claimed last year the movie was not based on her book, she has changed her mind and filed a suit"
Wonder if money made change her mind??? Guess she realized later how much money she can make with a law suit if she wins.
Or she is trying to bring her name up in the media (bad press is still press for promotion). I know the Rizzoli & Isles series. Maybe she wants to promote herself for more business.
Or she is right ....of course I didn't want to leave this option out.

If the movie was a flop then I doubt we would have heard from her.
Now that she is at it, she actually have something going for her. The title and main characters are the same…so I guess she has a chance. Or get pr, but this is costly way if she loses.

Yeah true this will put people off for future work relations. Maybe she thought her career is over anyway so nothing to loose

Considering what the movie brought in she doesn't seem to be suing for much, not that I know much.

The other way to look at it is that someone with an established reputation and track record wouldn't put their livelihood and working relationships on the line unless they thought they had a viable case.
Copyright infringement is no small thing. Anyone who works for months or even years to create a work has every right to protect it, and be first in line to profit from it. When it's stolen, the loss isn't just that piece of work. It's a loss to the writer's professional history, of all of the goodwill and tangible benefits that come with being the creator of a successful work, and to the writer's heirs, who by rights can receive revenues generated by the work for 75 years after the artist's death.
I've had work stolen. It's one of the worst experiences of my life. So I tend to side with any writer with a credible story until it's proven otherwise.
