Irish Hooch thread anyone?

I'm always up to learn something new. whats pointin? I thought I'd start a thread about irish hooch after seeing some references in the engaged thread.

Thanks Joanna, I've had guinness but only the american version in a can. I totally saw why people called it liquid bread. i am gluten free, but one day hope to go to ireland and get guinness straight from the tap. I understand its totally different.

Interesting apparently poitin can be QUITE strong!!!

I'm Irish and you don't really see Irish hooch at all anymore. I suppose generations ago people would make their own alcohol but it was mostly in rural areas. In Ireland you would calll it poitin (pronounced as if you were saying poteen). Alchol volume would be 40 to 90%.

Very popular drinks nowadays are those brewed on Ireland like Guinness, Heineken and of course Irish whiskey.

When I looked at the wikipedia article Ace i saw name brand irish poitin.

Poitin is a brand name also. Not sure was the brand named after what people call it or do people sometimes call it poitin because of the brand. I think since traditionally generations ago people made it at home I suppose you could make it as strong as you like!

Irish and Scottish whiskeys are very similar in how they are produced. Both primarily made with barley but in the malting stage, Scotch barley is dried over peat fires. This gives Scotch its distinct smokey taste. Irish whiskey is dried in closed ovens. No smoke touches the malt, which makes for a much smoother taste.

Scotch whiskies are typically distilled twice, while Irish whiskey three times. Both are required by law to be matured for at least three years.

I don't drink so no idea what they taste like. If anybody ever visits Ireland most distillerys do tours so would be worth checking out!

I can only vouch for the wonders of Scotch being that Im Scottish and was practically raised to believe it is the only Whiskey worth drinking - other than Baileys Irish Cream (seriously a sip of heaven) or Jamiesons haven't ventured too far into Irish made alcohol. No complaints from me though.

As for Guinness found it absolutely revolting so stuck to Whiskey.

I'll have to try irish whiskey sometime. I had a small taste of Guiness albeit american bottled stuff and I LOVED it. I totally see why some friends call it liquid bread. unfortunately since I have gluten issues it probably has too much barley although I'm hearing new research that fermentation may remove gluten?

I want to try Jameisons sometime.
