Does George Know?! Clooney’s Fiancée Was Advisor To ‘Dictator’ Accused Of Human Rights Violations

Posted on May 1, 2014 @ 11:17AM | By Melissa Cronin

George Clooney’s new fiancée, Amal Alamuddin, is gorgeous, brilliant, and self-assured — but she isn’t perfect! RadarOnline.com has learned that the successful international attorney has come under fire for her work with leaders of the troubled nation of Bahrain, where she worked as advisor to the King, who is known as one of “the world’s enduring dictators.” Does Clooney know?

One year after starting her legal career in London, Alamuddin served as legal adviser to King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa as part of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry, intended to uncover human rights violations in the country. That same year, the King was named by CBSNews.com as “one of the world’s enduring dictators,” noting his use of “martial law,” and “gross human rights violations and protester murders,” which numbered at least 11 in that year. CBS also accused security forces under his command of “indiscriminate abduction and torture of dissidents.”

But although Alamuddin’s work on the inquiry — which was commissioned by the King — was supposedly intended to uncover human rights violations, leading policy blog PolicyMic.com called the final result “a whitewash” and revealed that more than 30 people have been killed by the same security forces supposedly under investigation since the report’s release.

Indeed, the country has been slow to take up the report’s recommendations, with an April 25, 2014, report from Human Rights Watch noting that “there is no evidence that post-BICI initiatives … have been effective in stopping torture and holding torturers criminally accountable for their actions.” An additional report from Americans for Democracy and Human Rights in Bahrain claims that Bahrain “has failed to implement any of the 176 recommendations” of the commission.

Alamuddin, 36, has since stepped down from her role as advisor to the King. But nevertheless, despite what Human Rights Watch called the country’s “reputation for torture,” PolicyMic claims she has “co-authored a book arguing for an Arab Court for Human Rights, which will be based in Bahrain,” a decision they called “eyebrow-raising, given the country’s human rights record.”

“Alamuddin has the ear of the Bahraini government, as well as the eyes of the world,” the site’s Lead World Editor, Sara Yasin, wrote. “She’s been working on serious human rights issues in Syria, as well as on drones. Perhaps it is time for her to press Bahrain to take its human rights violations seriously too.”

For now, she’s focused on celebrating her engagement with Clooney, 52, since he popped the question on April 22, as Radar has reported.

Well, it´s a matter of choise really. What kind of cases you want, or legal consulting to do. It's not like a lawyer to turn away lucrative business usually.

We should be equal in front of law. It means mass murderers, dictators robbing the country, killing own people, terrorist etc. have a right for a lawyer, there is always someone to represent them.

Lawyers specialises the type of cases they handle, money is good and not much competition (most will refuse and reject these type of offers). So it advances you career but limits future choices unless you marry GC.

I guess she thought she could change something that's why she took the job offer and when it failed she quit. Nothing bad about trying ....

With regards to the book who knows when it was written and what the whole meaning was about that sentence. Maybe they just copied out that sentence to look like that but maybe she meant it in a different way. We only know when we read the book.

So I'm not too much concerned that she worked for him.

Bahrain is anyway interesting. Some American celebrities like that little state. I remember when Michael Jackson got acquitted from his last trial he was hiding for a while in Bahrain "to relax"...... I guess Bahrain is a much bigger story than what the journalist it telling us above I guess that's why Amal was involved in the first place..

Well...

In case anyone wants to search for that report.

So the report was a "whitewash" according to this PolicyMic blog.

And why would anyone think that a dictator would actually follow any recommendations that would be in direct conflict with his goal of staying a dictator?

To blame Amal or expect her to push any government to do anything which is against their own interests is pretty ludicrous if you ask me.

Well you need money to afford a lawyer in the first place so that makes every "person" rich who can afford a lawyer and not everybody wants to be a lawyer for the poor or you make no life for yourself.... Just saying

And that she is a lawyer for the "high profile cases" who might have money can be seen that she is a lawyer for the rich or just a damn good lawyer that all the rich want to higher her.

Your way to see it.

Yes, Nicky. It's well-known that human rights lawyers have to take cases they'd ideally not take which pay well, to balance or fund out the more needy cases..............

And they must always hope that showing a dictator the better ways of justice there might be some hope of change.

If you look at the the BBC Global interview where Amal was saying that the Ukrainian government did have enough laws to ratify the Rome Treaty which mean they can refer people to the ICC, but that they hadn't done it yet. Must be incredibly frustrating at times!

Similarly her advice to the Egyptian justice system

Well I think as for my knowledge (I can be wrong of course) the King of Bahrain is not official a Dictator. The artical above claims that " CBSNews.com" accued him to be one. And the history about the king and the problems about his country you can find here:

What exactly does lawyer do when they are an advisor to the head of a governmen?. And then why wouldn't he take their advice? I don't have much knowledge in these matters.

Good question. I'm not sure but I assume in this case for example Bahrain had big problems in 2011 when the "Arab Spring" started. The way the King reacted to the demonstration was big in the news as people died in the clash.

So I assume a Human Right Lawyer would advise the international law to him and how to use that in his country. Still to force the law in place they have but at the same time matching the international human right laws.

Or maybe they don't see which human rights laws got broken as they felt they have done everything correct and those lawyers try to explain that to him without telling another country what to do. The diplomatic way..."I'm a adviser about law not a political figure to tell you what to do."

If Amal quit because he never took her advise or if other problems were involved is not really clear.

Regardless about all the human right critics about the country until today (as far as I know and I can be wrong)for example countries like the UK and the US Government support Bahrain and do not call him a dictator but the King has lot of protesters.....

But again....this is my guess and I have no clue like you. Below a quote about the 2011 problem...

Quote:

In June 2011 Hamad commissioned the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry headed by respected human rights lawyer M. Cherif Bassiouni to look into the events surrounding the unrest. The establishment of the BICI was praised by Barack Obama and the international community as a step towards establishing responsibility and accountability for the events of the 2011–2012 Bahraini uprising.
