An Officer And A Gentleman...

Their latest project sees them take on the roles of heroic curators as they attempt to recover precious artwork stolen by the Nazis during World War II.

And George Clooney and Matt Damon are every inch their dapper best in newly-released stills of upcoming movie, The Monuments Men.

The Hollywood A-listers join a stellar line-up of stars in the historic film, based on the book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves And The Greatest Treasure Hunt In History by Robert M. Edsel, including Cate Blanchett, Hugh Bonneville and Bill Murray.

One preview shot shows the pair clad in dapper Army uniforms as they chat away while sipping whiskey at a bar.

With his salt and pepper locks swept over to the side, Clooney, 52, is his smoldering best as he flashes his trademark wry grin towards his co-star pal.

Showcasing touching behind the scenes moments, the duo can be seen sharing a joke with John Goodman, Bob Balaban and Bill Murray as they strut around on set in khaki camouflage gear.

Meanwhile, more action-packed stills see Clooney and Damon frantically attempting to cover up a treasured monument as they wrap in swathes of fabric.

Clooney can also be seen in action as he gets to work in the director's chair, with the movie being his directorial follow-up to The Ides Of March.

In The Monuments Men, Clooney plays Frank Stokes, who in real life was a conservationist at Harvard University's Fogg Museum when the war began. Stout led the team who braved battle to save Europe's artistic legacy from the clutches of the Nazis.

In a world exclusive trailer obtained by MailOnline, Stout is seen telling Matt's James Rorimer - a curator at the Metropolitan Museum Of Art: 'If you destroy an entire generation of people's culture, it's as if they never existed. That's what Hitler wants and it's the one thing we can't allow.'

When Stout explains to Rorimer the logistics of putting together such a team - of just seven men - Rorimer replies: 'Aren't we a little old for that?' To which Stout replies: 'Yes!'

Stout is then seen explaining the plan of action to the rest of the team - which includes Bill Murray, John Goodman and Hugh Bonneville - telling them: 'You've all been selected because we are going to need your knowledge and we're going to need your skill.

'We've been tasked with the finding and protecting of over 5 million pieces of stolen artwork.'

After the team is put through a grueling basic training regime in England, they head to Germany, with Stout telling his men: 'The Nazis are on the run and they're taking everything with them. So we have to get as close to the front as we can.'

Rorimer also attempts to get Cate Blanchett's art historian character Rose Valland on board by asking her just what she saw.

She replied: 'Thousands of pieces. They would photograph them and then take them to show Hitler.'

But it is only when Rorimer tells Valland that Hitler had authorised the destruction of the art upon his death or the downfall of Germany that she really appears to be on board.

A passionate Stout continues the voiceover, saying: 'You can wipe out an entire generation, you can burn their homes to the ground and somehow they'll still find their way back.

'But if you destroy their history, you destroy their achievements and it's as if they never existed. That's what Hitler wants and that's exactly what we are fighting for.'

The Monuments Men is scheduled for release in the US on February 7, and in the UK on February 14.
