Re: August 2015 Chit Chat
It's been hot in Hell-A too.
Still in a drought which SUCKS! Hoping we'll have an El Nino weather pattern this winter which would bring us much needed rain.
Right now that's a fire burning that's grown to 27,000 acres over night. I read somewhere that size is 8 times the size of San Francisco so that's very scary!
Hopefully, no one else will die in these fires. One firefighter died and then there was an accident where a man going to his brother's wedding rehearsal dinner collided with a speeding forestry fire truck! So very sad.
Me, I'm staying inside and hope we continue to have power because it's too hot not to have a fan or air conditioning working!!
Hope everyone is doing well. I've heard of some flooding in Florida and the East coast! Wish we could get some of that water over here!!

Re: August 2015 Chit Chat
LorneDoone we were having a lot of rain a couple of weeks ago and I thought at the time that I wish I could have sent it to the West Coast. Mother Nature doesn't work logically tho.
Hope you don't live too close to these wild fires. It is scary. And so dangerous for those firefighters. This story plays out every year, especially in California. It truly sucks.
Please be cool and stay cool my dear!

Hi donnamarie not near the fires but hear about them everyday.
Staying cool has been difficult but worse is the muggieness. Just trying to stay inside as much as possible and hydrating.

LorneDoone, I didn't realize it gets muggy in California? You must have bad hair days then. I live in DC where almost the whole summer is muggy. The dreaded 3 H's. Hazy, hot and humid. Talk about bad hair days. Ugh!

We're having what they call "monsoonal" moisture. There have been hurricanes south of us - forming near Mexico - that have brought some rains but mostly just hot, muggy weather.

LornaDoone, so sorry to hear CA is dealing with more fires. More so, the loss of life. Are the fires causing problems with air quality? Sending good thoughts to all dealing with this.

I heard in the news it is the worst fire in history in California. Scary. I don't know if I want to live in a state were you have to be scared losing your home due to a fire.

I know they're predicting rain for you guys in CA. I hope it helps and doesn't make things worse. I have family a bit north of LA and some near SF. I haven't heard from any of them yet, but am hoping they're ok.

Yes previews are until 25 August then it's on until October.
Some reviews were very good although really the correct etiquette
is to allow the previews to be the "safe fine tuning period"
I can't get to London to see it but as they're streaming a live
performance into many cinemas later I'm hoping there will be either
a TV broadcast or a DVD.
That happened in 2008 when David Tennant played Hamlet.
He is equally admired as a British actor.

I wish I could see it. Cieran Hinds is playing Claudius and he is a brilliant actor too. I have to wait for telly or DVD.
And just for the record I didn't invent "cumberbitches". It's even mentioned in the article above.
I don't really know who David Tennant is. Will check up on him.

Joanna - Wasn't David Tennant the last Doctor Who, or am I thinking of someone else?
I need some help. (I know - it's obvious! - But not that kind of help, this time. ) One of my favorite movies is on tv tonight but I'm afraid to watch it. They're showing Ocean's Eleven, which I love and have seen at least a dozen times, but every time I watch it again it drives me crazy for at least the next few days.
Why? Because I still can't figure out how Danny Ocean was supposed to get back into the room with Bruiser after the robbery! It doesn't make any sense and every time I see it it drives me nuts!
If anyone has an answer, PLEASE put me out of my misery so I can enjoy watching the movie again! I promise I will be eternally grateful!

Re: August 2015 Chit Chat
To all who commented about the fires... they are mostly in northern california for now. We did have that awful fire near the 15 freeway that you may have seen on the news with cars and trucks burning, but we had some rain and that helped with fighting that fire.
The ones up North are awful and homes and lives have been lost. We keep praying for rain!
None of those are near me and at this point, I don't think air quality her in So Cal is affected by those. At least not yet.
Thanks for all the good thoughts much appreciated!

I didn't realize he was so old. 84. Yes, LorneDoone I remember that indiscretion. It was plastered all over the trash tabloids. Rough time for Kathy Lee. But she and Frank got through it. It looked like they had a pretty strong marriage afterwards. And two lovely children.

Re: August 2015 Chit Chat
BRILLIANT !
The sea of 96MILLION plastic balls that LA hopes will save it from drought: Reservoir is covered in an ocean of black spheres to stop 300million gallons of water evaporating
Black plastic balls were this week released into the 175-acre Los Angeles Reservoir in Sylmar, California
They are designed to cover the water, prevent evaporation and protect it from dust, rain, chemicals and wildlife
The polyethylene balls, around the size of an apple, cost 36 cents each and are black to help deflect the UV rays

Lizzy let me just say that being a mod is NOT easy especially when the site gets more lively for your taste.
If you'd like to take a crack at it please do volunteer next time katie comes on.
Nicky is basically holding down the fort and the back and forth excitement that you seem to crave with your PC comment makes this NOT PAID job very difficult.
So excuse me for being okay with people being more polite to each other, not jumping on each other's backs, not fighting, and yes, being less bitchy and more politically correct.

Re: August 2015 Chit Chat
yes I saw that. Some of our newscasters were concerned about sunlight, heat, plastic balls and water.
Using the plastic bottle and heat issue as a concern.
I don't know if these plastic balls would have that issue. One would hope they researched and tested that before dumping all that plastic on top of drinking water.
Anything that might save water is a good idea though.

that open ceiling pool (?) water anyway needs a filtering
before being used IMO
but
is this anyway for only drinking or watering fields too?
they say it prevents some algae/fungi proliferation on the surface
it's like a big floating top
and I am again thinking that it needs some big filtering before used
in every cases

Re: August 2015 Chit Chat
There was a news piece on TV last night about the black balls and the reservoir. The plastic used is the same plastic used for milk cartons. The question is over time sitting out on the water in the sun does something possibly leech out and into the water. Like LorneDoone mentioned above. The "experts" say that won't happen. And the water does go through a filtration system before it comes through peoples' faucets. Guess time will tell.
And yes the balls also keep algae from growing. Another plus is that dust particles can't work their way into the air and contribute to air pollution. That would happen if water evaporates in the reservoir.

Silje - I remember Woodstock. Three days of mud, mud, mud and some of the best music ever! Went with a bunch of friends and got split up on day 1. Didn't see them again until we got home - by hitching a ride with some people heading to NYC. I still have the tickets, since by the time we got there they had given up and were just letting everyone in. It was a great weekend!

Re: August 2015 Chit Chat
Silje - Have you ever seen the movie they made of Woodstock? It gives you an idea of the music and what it was like behind the scenes - but it isn't the whole picture because you can't feel the rain and mud and lack of food and bathrooms!
Some people were even selling water! When their neighbors saw what they were doing they took out their garden hoses and gave out water for free. Others made sandwiches and drove around handing them out to people who hadn't thought to bring food - the local stores couldn't fill the demand. If you were lucky you had a car to sleep in. If not, you slept on the ground or "rented" space in someone's home. We slept on a family's basement floor. Ugh! but at least we were out of the rain and cold. (And it does get cold at night in the Catskills - even in the summer.)
The promoters of Woodstock claim they were taken by surprise and that's why they were completely unprepared for what happened. I didn't believe it then and I still don't, but it did make for one unforgettable weekend.

Re: August 2015 Chit Chat
I'm back from my one week vacation to Poland. It was sooo amazing and hot.
There was around 38 degrees (100 Fahrenheit). I lost 2 kg because I was sweating so much and eating light Food hehehehe. And in Krakow I had no A/C in the Hotel as it was so old. I was sweating at night and during my shower LOL
I went to Krakow and Warsaw. I love Poland. So cheap. For example, I had an Apetizer, main course real good polish Food, a hugh drink and plus Tip included, I paid in total $17. Amazing.
Krakow was my favourite. It is UNESCO heritage and the City is so cute. And they have a famous Salt mine to visit and of course Auschwitz concentration camp. Which was a bit sad to visit. But the City is really amazing.
Warsaw is pretty too but amazing for Shopping. I love my 2 handbags I bought I couldn't believe how cheap Poland still is.
It was a great trip.
