LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- George Clooney and Don Cheadle, long-time friends and co-stars of the “Oceans” films are set to received a distinguished honor.

Clooney and Cheadle will receive the 2007 Peace Summit Award by a collection of Nobel laureates honoring honor their efforts to bring peace to Africa’s war-torn Darfur region, according to a report in People.

The World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, which includes former President Jimmy Carter, the Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Soviet President Michael Gorbachev, will present the actors their award at it’s annual meeting in Rome in December.

“I am always moved when I see artists such as George and Don use their positions to speak up for the most vulnerable of our fellow human beings,” Archbishop Tutu said in a statement, according to the peace and human rights website TheCommunity.com. “They have brought the suffering in Sudan into the awareness of millions, and have raised tens of millions of dollars to assist the victims of violence there. They inspire us all and show that every person, in every walk of life, can do something to help make the world a better place.”

Clooney and Cheadle have visited the war ravaged nation and worked with government leaders to bring greater world attention to the plight of suffering refugees. They both also appeared in the documentary, “Darfur Now.”

Clooney & Cheadle Receive Award For Darfur

By Marta Falconi, Associated Press 12/13/2007

ROME — George Clooney and Don Cheadle brought their Darfur campaign to Rome on Thursday, where they received a peace award for their efforts to raise awareness on the humanitarian crisis in the region.

"We do concerts, rallies, where thousands of people show up and say how terrible it is," Clooney told a news conference. "But the truth is not one single thing has changed. Now it's time to turn that corner."

The Hollywood actors have raised money and attention to stop a conflict that has claimed more than 200,000 lives and uprooted 2.5 million people since ethnic African rebels took up arms against Sudan's Arab-dominated government in 2003.
On Thursday, they asked world leaders to provide helicopters for a joint U.N.-African union peacekeeping force scheduled to take over security in the Sudanese region later this month. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appealed for the aircraft, which he said are critical to protect both military personnel and civilians.

"If we get 24 helicopters in there we can protect 4 million people," Clooney said. "If they are lucky enough to escape rape, torture, murder ... and survive malaria and AIDS and starvation, (they) should at least have the chance to live."

Clooney and Cheadle were presented with a bronze statue by Italian sculptor Oliviero Rainaldi. Organizers credited "their efforts in favor of pacifying the tormented region of Darfur and for helping save lives."

The ceremony marked the opening of a yearly meeting of Nobel Peace Prize laureates organized at city hall by a foundation headed by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The meeting gathered Gorbachev, the Dalai Lama and other Nobel winners.

Clooney, who has a home at Lake Como and often travels to Italy, was accompanied by girlfriend Sarah Larson.
He and Cheadle co-founded a humanitarian organization, Not on Our Watch, together with other stars including Brad Pitt and Matt Damon to focus global attention on the plight of Darfur's people. They have raised more than $9.3 million for humanitarian efforts in the region.

"These people need help and protection; but they do have hope," Cheadle said.

DALAI LAMA AND GEORGE CLOONEY HEADLINE ROME NOBEL SUMMIT
Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - 09:48
An address by the Dalai lama and the presentation of the 2007 Peace Summit Award to American actors George Clooney and Don Cheadle will be the highlights of this year's World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates.

The 8th edition of the summit will be held in the Italian capital from December 13 through 15.

This year's theme is 'The Next Generation' and will center on topics which focus on children, including their exposure to AIDS and the phenomenon of child slavery.

Hosting this year's summit will be Rome Mayor Walter Veltroni and former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev.

The Rome Nobel peace summit initiative began eight years ago, the brainchild of the peace-promoting Gorbachev Foundation which the ex-Soviet president set up in 1992.

Clooney and Cheadle won this year's summit prize for their efforts on behalf of Darfur and for their ''commitment to saving human lives and alleviating the suffering of civilian victims of the conflict''.

Over the past two years, the two actors have visited the war-torn region in Sudan to draw attention to the plight of war refugees there.

They have also used their celebrity to speak to government leaders about the tribal and ethnic conflict there and both took part in last year's award-winning documentary Darfur Now.

Past winners of the award have included musicians Peter Gabriel, Bob Geldof and Yusuf Islam, formerly known as Cat Stevens.

The address by the Dalai Lama, who won the Nobel peace prize in 1989, has drawn an enormous amount of attention and the venue had to be moved to a larger audience hall to accommodate the flood of requests to attend the talk.

The Dalai Lama's attendance has been criticised by the Chinese government which accused the exiled religious leader of wanted to ''recreate a cruel slave state in Tibet''.

His scheduled meeting with Pope Benedict XVI has also been criticised by Beijing.

The Rome summit is attended not only by those who have won the Nobel peace prize but also by prominent people from the world of politics, culture and science who work in the interest of a better world.

Among the laureates who have come to Rome in the past are: former Polish president Lech Walesa, who won the Nobel in 1983; 1976 winner Mairead Corrigan Maguire, who campaigned for peace in Northern Ireland; Israeli President Shimon Peres, who won the Nobel in 1994; former South African president Frederik Willem de Klerk who shared the 1993 Nobel with Nelson Mandela for his role in the ending of apartheid; and Mohammed El-Baradei, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) who won in 1995 together with the IAEA.

George is never a lose for the right things to say.

GEORGE CLOONEY CHIDES 'TEDDY' TEACHER COVERAGE

By ROME (REUTERS)
Hollywood actors George Clooney and Don Cheadle said world leaders must not be allowed to ignore the war in Darfur and criticized the extensive media coverage given to the 'teddy' teacher, as they received an award by Nobel peace laureates for their efforts to help civilians caught up in the conflict.
Together with Brad Pitt, Clooney and Cheadle -- co-stars in "Ocean's Thirteen" -- have used their celebrity status to raise money for Sudanese refugees through their "Not On Our Watch" charity, and make sure Darfur's "continuing carnage" is not forgotten.

Clooney, the son of a TV journalist, said the media had a vital role to play and took issue with the extensive coverage given to the British teacher briefly jailed in Sudan last month for allowing her class to name a teddy bear Mohammed.
"A young woman was threatened with forty lashes and six months in jail and it was in the front page of every newspaper for a week in England and America," Clooney said at a press conference in Rome after receiving the Peace Summit Award.

"I would suggest that every single human being living in Darfur right now would happily take forty lashes and six months in jail over the treatment that they're getting," he said.
"You hope that that kind of coverage would be handed out to everyone, not just one woman who happens to be white and from a Western country," Clooney said.

Clooney also spoke about the U.S. governments responsibility and said "we have an American election coming so this is the time to put pressure on American candidates, because believe me none of these people want to talk about this issue."

"None of them want to deal with this issue, so right now is the time to place pressure on the people who can actually affect change because we can't," he said.
Tales of horror
Cheadle, who earned an Oscar nomination for his role in "Hotel Rwanda" about a hotel manager trying to save lives during the 1994 genocide, said he had listened to tale after tale of horror when he visited refugees in Darfur but also found that people still had hope.
"That is really what keeps me pulled in to this: the promise that we can provide something better for them," Cheadle said.
Earlier this year Clooney, Cheadle and Pitt raised $10 million for Darfur at the Cannes film festival, but Clooney said little had changed for the people of Darfur.

"Don and I... stand here before you as failures," Clooney told the Nobel laureates attending the award ceremony, including former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and the Dalai Lama.
"The simple truth is that when it comes to the atrocities in Darfur those people are not better off now than they were years ago. The murders continue, the rapes continue and some two and a half million refugees are yet to go home," Clooney added.

Experts estimate 200,000 people have been killed and 2.5 million uprooted in the Sudanese region's conflict, which started in 2003 and pits mostly non-Arab rebel groups against the Khartoum government and Arab militias.
Ceasefires have been agreed only to fall apart, and plans to send 26,000 United Nations peacekeepers have been thrown into doubt because of restrictions imposed by Khartoum and the failure by Western states to provide helicopters.

GEORGE AND DON HONORED AT NOBEL PEACE PRIZE SUMMIT

by Molly December 13, 2007 39 Reactions 0 Shares

This evening, George Clooney and Don Cheadle received the 2007 Peace Summit Award at the Summit of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates in Rome. It's a big day for George, as he was also nominated for a Best Actor Golden Globe for Michael Clayton, but before getting excited about that there were more somber things on hand.

The duo was honored for the work they've done raising awareness and money to aid the situation in Darfur through their organization, Not on Our Watch. At the ceremony, the actors were both given bronze statue by Italian sculptor Oliviero Rainaldi. The usually jokey Clooney was anything but lighthearted during his acceptance speech. He said:

"Don and I . . . stand here before you as failures. . . . The simple truth is that when it comes to the atrocities in Darfur those people are not better off now than they were years ago. The murders continue, the rapes continue and some two and a half million refugees are yet to go home. . . .

We have an American election coming so this is the time to put pressure on American candidates, because believe me none of these people want to talk about this issue. . . . None of them want to deal with this issue, so right now is the time to place pressure on the people who can actually affect change because we can't."

He spoke to an audience including some of the biggest political figures of our time (and, of course, Miss Sarah Larson), people I'm sure the actors are honored to just stand next to. Clooney recently said that he is headed back to the Darfur region in January. Congratulations to Don and George for receiving this award, and, of course, bravo to them for all the hard work they've been doing.
