Cleanse diet Empty Cleanse diet

Post by Katiedot Mon 30 Sep 2013, 07:49

[starting this based on another conversation we had in the chit chat thread]

Katiedot wrote:

Seems odd to me that a supervisor would 'impose' a dietary program on employees.  Is there any significance to the timing of this event?  Thinking out loud here mostly, but am interested, if you care to respond.
Oh no, it's not at all imposed!  He suggested it and we said we'd like to do it.  The timing is just because he happened to be in Thailand last week which is where the product we're using comes from.

More than happy to share updates but I will state on record that I don't believe in this cleanse/detox nonsense.  Scientists can't find evidence of so-called toxins (apart from what the body already very efficiently deals with 24-hrs a day) and when the cleanse people name their toxins (such as metals etc), the herbs and stuff they recommend don't affect what they claim to affect [because the people peddling these wares can't tell the difference between wishful thinking, placebo effect and actual results].

I'm doing it because I believe fasting is good for the soul and because I like the idea of eating very lightly for a few days.
So, today's the first day of the cleanse and so far so good. Am peeing like a racehorse but the 'food' is really yummy. Even the juices which I thought sounded a bit boring have so far turned out delicious. I'm not so convinced by all the supplements we have to take, but hey, in for a penny, in for a pound.

This is the 'food' part of the cleanse. In addition to this you get packets of supplements, tea bags, herbal powders, one foot soak and, oddly, a lot of organic coconut oil.

Monday:
08.30 Breakfast: 1 avocado, cubed. 4 fresh figs, chopped. ½ teaspoon cinnamon. Juice of 1 lime. Mix all these ingredients as a salad
08.30 breakfast juice: juice of 1 apple juice with fresh ginger. Add juice of 1 lime, 350g fresh watermelon juice
11am juice: juice of 1 apple, ¼ cabbage and 1 carrot.
12.30 Lunch: salad made from chopped ¼ green cabbage, ¼ red cabbage, ¼ red onion, 2 tomatoes, ½ carrot, 1 garlic clove. Sprinkle with seaweed if you have. Drizzle in a little olive oil and lemon juice, adding rock salt and black pepper.
15.00 juice: Juice the following: large handful coriander, ¼ cabbage (red or white, doesn’t matter), 3 celery stalks, 1 cucumber, 100g cantaloupe melon, handful of parsley.
18.30 Dinner: broth (soup): boil selection of vegetables eg: onions, celery, carrots, parsnips, spinach, leeks, fennel, turnips, sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans) and strain. Add rock salt, black pepper and fresh herbs to flavour and spoon of Miso paste.

Tuesday:
08.30 Breakfast: juice of 2 carrots, 3 celery sticks, ¼ cabbage, 1 lime.
08.30 breakfast juice: juice of 1 apple juice with fresh ginger. Add juice of 1 lime, 350g fresh watermelon juice
11am juice: juice of 1 apple, ¼ cabbage and 1 carrot.
12.30 Lunch: salad made from 150g carrot, 15g raisins, 1 red apple, handful of rocket (arugula), 2 celery sticks, 1sp sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Drizzle in a little olive oil and lemon juice, adding rock salt and black pepper.
15.00 juice: Juice the following: large handful coriander, ¼ cabbage (red or white, doesn’t matter), 3 celery stalks, 1 cucumber, 100g cantaloupe melon, handful of parsley.
18.30 Dinner: broth (soup): boil selection of vegetables eg: onions, celery, carrots, parsnips, spinach, leeks, fennel, turnips, sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans) and strain. Add rock salt, black pepper and fresh herbs to flavour and spoon of Miso paste.

Wednesday:
08.30 Breakfast: smoothie made of 1 banana, 150g of soft fruits (berries), 10ml coconut milk. To flavour add a pinch of nutmeg and grate 40g of dark chocolate into it.
08.30 breakfast juice: juice of 1 apple juice with fresh ginger. Add juice of 1 lime, 350g fresh watermelon juice
11am juice: juice of 1 apple, ¼ cabbage and 1 carrot.
12.30 Lunch: salad made ¼ cucumber, 1 ripe avocado, 1 garlic clove, 1/4 red onion, 1 tomato. Drizzle in a little olive oil and lime juice, adding rock salt and black pepper.
15.00 juice: Juice the following: large handful coriander, ¼ cabbage (red or white, doesn’t matter), 3 celery stalks, 1 cucumber, 100g cantaloupe melon, handful of parsley.

Day two and frankly, I'm tired. Even after 8 hours' good sleep. I've been balefully eyeing the nespresso machine in our office as I sit here with my so far untouched wheatgrass and burdock shot (mixed with virgin coconut oil to make it extra unpalatable).

Jo - nope, the one great thing about working in a hotel is that you can persuade a chef to do this for you and get it delivered to the office by room service.

Thanks for the recipies.

It´s such a mess to do it, blenders are hard to clean. These smoothies do not look or taste the same if you leave them in the fridge, even for couple of hours.

I´d do it if I had the room service, definately.

Sounds great. Very colorful & nutritious salads.
How was the foot soak?

To make wheatgrass shots more palatable, I always munch on a slice of orange straight after it.

Think how great you'd feel if you did this for a lot longer?  Skin would be glowing too.

Extremely well! The diet also comes with sachets of stuff you're supposed to take and I noticed a lot of those supplements are designed to, as they put it, "aid gentle evacuation" and boy, not sure gentle is exactly the right word there . . . nuff said? I do feel more gassy and bloated in the afternoons and I think that's down to all this bloody cabbage - juiced and raw.

I also add chia seeds to the juices because I absolutely swear by chia.

Ocean wrote:To make wheatgrass shots more palatable, I always munch on a slice of orange straight after it.
Might just try that, thanks. I'm deeply disliking the wheatgrass shots.

Not sure about glowing though. I feel tired (not surprising on such a low calorie diet) and definitely missing things like protein in my diet. Have been craving steak the past two days. The amazing thing is that I don't miss sugar at all.

Well a friend of mine has totally given up sugar where possible (except sugars found naturally in certain foods of course) and she swears that she has never felt better - I myself don't know if I could do it.

To be honest, if you'd asked me if I could remove all added sugar from my diet, I'd've said no, but it seems it is possible and easier than I thought.

However, I'm really looking forward to a spoonful of sugar in my herbal tea tomorrow morning! Three days of this is all I can take.

Wheatgrass shots and green tea can be really bad for your teeth. Friend of mine (she is fanatic about these things) had laser whitening and dentist advised to avoid red wine, coffee for 3 weeks. She had these green things all days long... her white teeth went greenish purple.

Well, sugar has an addictive effect, but within 3 days of eliminating it completely from your diet, you no longer crave it. Symptoms are bad if you've been eating copious amount of it prior to that: fatigue, emotional, mood-swings, anxiety....

Once it's out of your system, you feel great. Just eating it from natural sources like fresh fruit is so much healthier.

nThaks for sharing Katiedot. I never did a cleanse. Not sure if I could do it.

Once my beautician recommended to me to do a sugar free diet and she recommended a book from Patrick Holford "GL Diet" here the book

http://www.patrickholford.com/index.php/shop/bookdetail/185/

The best thing ever happen to me. I avoid sugar now for years with no problems thanks to that book. And I don't feel anymore I need it. And I lost weight too. My skin turn to be much better too. I can only recommend that book.

Cleanse diet Empty Re: Cleanse diet

Post by Katiedot Thu 03 Oct 2013, 06:10

Sounds interesting, thanks Nicky.

Well, after three days how do I feel?  Lighter, yes but not really all that much more amazing to be honest.

My feeling is that if I'd gone away to some retreat and spent the days doing yoga and stuff then I'd be raving about it, but as I was working full time there wasn't that placebo effect in place.

I think a lot of this stuff is psychological.  Not knocking it because if your mind's not in the right pace, it's unlikely your health will be but most of what you hear about the wonders of cleansing is a lot of people convincing themselves they're feeling better.  Again, nothing wrong with that: where your mind goes, your ass will follow.

I wouldn't recommend doing it for longer than the three days; it's not a nutritionally balanced diet on its own (limited carbs and zero proteins - you are largely living off flavoured water).  I agree with what Atalante wrote upthread: if you want the benefit of fruits and veg, you're better off eating them rather than juicing them and throwing away half of the good stuff.

I would do it again - without all the herbs and supplements and shit - and add a light lunch with chicken or turkey or tofu - something with a bit of oomph in it.  I'd also add another salad in the evenings because a light soup at 6pm doesn't take you through the evening unless you're lucky enough to be able to go to bed at 8pm.

I am so looking forward to having a rare (nay, make that black and blue) steak for dinner tonight, I can't tell you.

Overall, day two was the worst day: headachy and hungry in late afternoon and if I'd had any food around I would have broken the detox treatment (I had a tin of tuna but no tin opener. I did seriously consider walking round to my office in my pyjamas to get the tin opener but decided against it. After 20 minutes of deliberation - I came that close to doing it!).  By the third day I felt an energy upswing as obviously my body got into the swing of finding calories from some other source than food.  Not entirely sure that's good for the body.

Did I lose weight?  I assume so, but I'm sorry to tell you that I don't own any scales so I don't know how much.  Can't tell you if my clothes are any looser because I've lost a lot of weight recently and all my clothes are already loose (I can take off most of my trousers without undoing the buttons or zip - a feat that really captivated my boyfriend at the time!).

One great benefit: I did love how flat my tummy has become.

Final thoughts: the diet needs more fibre.  I'm not a big believer in using purgatives to get your digestive system going (not when it normally functions well, obviously it's a different story if you need to use laxatives anyway) so I'd rather add fibre to the diet to keep myself regular than have senna, licorice and all the rest to take as supplements.  I don't think that's a healthy way to encourage detoxing.

I loved the salads and the juices because they were surprisingly flavourful. The afternoon juice with cabbage in it took a while to get used to, but luckily I like coleslaw so raw cabbage is fine by me. I didn't get hungry until the evenings because you're getting some sort of food or juice every few hours, which I think is the way to go.

So no, this didn't change my attitude towards cleanse diets which I still think are a lot of hype, nutrition misinformation and marketing.  I feel better for having done it mostly because I'm proud of myself for having stuck the course and I simply feel a bit of forbearance is good for the soul.

I think it's a great way to 'reset' the body and kick start a genuinely healthy food regime.  I'm happily off caffeine, alcohol and don't (as yet) have any cravings for sugary foods which I think is a good thing, but also I wasn't particularly addicted to any of these in the first place.  Now that it's over, I'm happy not to be stinking of raw garlic and onions, which feature all too heavily for my liking on this detox.  And yes, did I mention the steak I'm planning for dinner tonight?  Mmmmmm

Cleanse diet Empty Re: Cleanse diet

Post by LornaDoone Thu 03 Oct 2013, 06:52

The second day was the detox day that's why you felt blah.

As to eating the veggies, yes, that's a good thing to do but nutritionally, a good veggie press and drinking the fresh veggie juice raw is really, really good for your body.

I do agree that protein has to be part of the equation but a better way to lose weight (and I know cause I've seen hundreds do this):

Start with a really good Whey based protein drink that has NO sugar.  Do NOT use Soy based protein drinks.  They mimic hormones and are just not good for you especially if in the US because soy here is GMO and there is no way to know how much that might affect your body.  The whey drink should use stevia to sweeten.

Do two protein shakes a day mixed with either non fat milk or unsweetened almond milk (which I prefer) one for breakfast and one at dinner.

Mid morning a protein based snack - like two ounces of raw almonds or 1 oz of string cheese.

For lunch eat only a 2 to 4 ounces of protein based meal.  NO carbs AT ALL that includes veggies.

Mid afternoon eat a protein snack.  Perhaps a hard boiled egg.

Do that for the first, second, fourth and sixth days.

On the third, fifth and seventh days eat a 500 to 600 calorie lunch (shakes and snacks as on first two days).  Lunch can include non starchy veggies.

The reason you want to eat ONLY protein the first two days is that it takes that long for any stored sugars to be dissipated from your muscles.  Once you take out any excess sugars, your body becomes a fat burning machine by default.  Once that gets awakened and you follow this routine for a week you could potentially lose up to 15 lbs in that one week.

No it is NOT a bad diet because on that third, fifth and seventh days you are eating more calories and complex carbs at lunch.  Plus this has been researched - not only does it work - it works quickly.

If someone continues on this process then on the second, third and fourth weeks on the 7th day only you can do a free meal day.  That means no shakes but actual food.  By this time your body probably won't crave sugar but instead you'll be craving veggies.

I've seen people lose weight very very quickly and safely with this.

Two things that could be added are an alkalizing product (because all that protein does throw your body into an acidic state to start) and a good digestive enzyme for the proteins.

That sounds like a more balanced diet. I don't think it's healthy to cut out food groups so as yours has protein and some carbs, that seems more realistic.

I believe that cutting out any food groups cannot be good for you, unless medically there is a reason for this. All food is beneficial, it's just too much is the problem. When I have needed to lose weight and tone up in the past I've done the following. I eat every 2 hours no portions bigger than my fist and stop at 6pm, switch to decaf, add 6 glasses of water. I eat meat, fish, salads, fruits, cereals, desserts and easily lost 10kgs in 8 weeks. However I also walk minimum 5 kilometres a day and never hungry. Think smaller portions but more often sped my metabolism up.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Katie. Appreciate your insights, especially about not being in that 'spa' environment where everything is geared toward body consciousness and constant affirmative input.
Hope you thoroughly enjoyed your steak. I personally like horseradish with beef, but bleu cheese works, too.

Cleanse diet Empty Re: Cleanse diet

Post by LornaDoone Fri 04 Oct 2013, 07:26

Yes theminis, your suggestion does make a lot of sense and I agree that it works well but as you said, it takes 8 weeks to lose the weight.

What I wrote down is for people who need to lose a LOT of weight and need to lose it quickly.  It's not unheard of for people to lose as much as 20 to 30 pounds in a month and there are clinical studies stating that if the whey drinks have the right nutrients, it ends up being a very effective and safe method even if it is rapid.

The problem with many other diets is that they don't have the nutritional values that the body needs to lose weight yet stay healthy.

And since food is not taken away completely, it also helps people to keep off the weight.

Oh and the other thing is that the weight loss is the fat NOT lean muscle since you're taking in a lot of protein.

I did lose weight on this diet. I lost 8 pounds in one week and then another 5 within two weeks.

I stopped the diet because there is just too much temptation for food at work. I mean the stuff is EVERY WHERE and I had no will power ! So I will start it again when I retire which I hope will be soon, very soon!

I may try your suggestions Lorna, also someone told me once that if you aim to lose just over 1 kilo a week it's more sustainable and realistic for you and your body to maintain. I don't know anyone who lost a lot of weight quickly who was then able to keep it off. Since having kids I have found it easier to lose weight, but my problem is discipline, never met a muffin or cupcake I don't like?

With a Gallup poll revealing that 8 in 10 Americans eat fast food at least monthly and half saying they eat it weekly, these companies know they have a good thing going. Here are some truths that may make you wonder if you still want to go to there....

Never tried the cleanse diet. Last one was banana diet (for 3 days) and maybe I wasn´t suppose to but drank a lot of milk when I got hungry. It´s good Laughing

I can eat and drink without thinking IF I follow my normal routine aqua gym (water running) 3 times a week, riding 3-4 times a week.
