George Clooney's 'The Monuments Men' pushed to 2014
The World War II art recovery drama directed and co-written by star George Clooney and also starring Matt Damon and Bill Murray, won't open Dec. 18.

George Clooney's World War II drama "The Monuments Men" will not arrive in theaters this year as planned because the film's visual effects could not be completed in time, the actor and director said.

The tale of a ragtag band of art historians, museum curators and academics racing to rescue paintings and sculptures looted by the Nazis — slated to open Dec. 18 — now will be released by Sony Pictures early next year.

"We just didn't have enough time," Clooney said Tuesday by phone from London, where he and producing partner Grant Heslov were to start a 16-hour scoring session with composer Alexandre Desplat and a 110-piece orchestra as part of their race to complete the film.

"If any of the effects looked cheesy, the whole movie would look cheesy," said Clooney, who directed the film and stars in it. "We simply don't have enough people to work enough hours to finish it."

By moving into 2014, "Monuments Men" will be ineligible for the upcoming Academy Awards. But Clooney said Oscar attention was never his goal for the film, which he and Heslov adapted from Robert Edsel's nonfiction book "The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History."

"All we've ever said, from the very beginning, is that we wanted to make a commercial, non-cynical piece of entertainment," Clooney said. He said the intention was to make an ensemble film in the style of "The Guns of Navarone." In addition to Clooney, the film stars Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, John Goodman and Cate Blanchett. It was filmed in Germany and England earlier this year.

After arriving in London a day ago, Clooney said he and Heslov realized they were facing an impossible pursuit. "I looked at Grant and said, 'We're dying,'" Clooney said.

The filmmakers decided to call Sony and 20th Century Fox (which is distributing "The Monuments Men" overseas) to ask for an extension, even though they knew it was an extraordinary request so close to the film's planned premiere. "We can't call and ask for this," Heslov said he told Clooney before they picked up the phone. "They are going to kill us."



Clooney and Heslov said they called Sony's Amy Pascal and Fox's Jim Gianopulos on Tuesday morning, wondering if they would consider postponing the film.

A few hours after listening to Clooney and Heslov, Sony and Fox called back to say that the film could be pushed to an unspecified date in February, Clooney said. Sony would only say the film will come out in the first quarter of next year, but did not specify a month.

"The Monuments Men" isn't the only high-profile project unable to make a planned release date this season. Paramount Pictures is moving Martin Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street," which is still being edited, from Nov. 15 to Dec. 25, three people close to the production said this week. Several other movies, including "Foxcatcher," "Grace of Monaco" and "The Immigrant," all of which were once set to debut this year, have been delayed to 2014.

Clooney said he had sought a December release date, because his successful films "Ocean's Eleven" and "Ocean's Twelve" both had been released in that month. But even under the best of circumstances, he and Heslov would have been racing to finish the movie.

Principal photography on the $65-million project commenced in early March, and wrapped in mid-July. The real time crunch, however, came in constructing hundreds of visual-effects shots, some used in scenes depicting the art preservationists coming ashore in Normandy in the hours after D-Day.


"This is a bigger film than we usually do," said Clooney, who last directed 2011's "The Ides of March" and currently stars opposite Sandra Bullock in "Gravity." "It was a mad rush to do it from the very beginning." Without faulting the work of the half-dozen companies working on the hundreds of visual-effects shots in the film, Clooney said the quick post-production schedule didn't allow for their best efforts. "It wasn't going to be finished, and I wouldn't want to have my name on it," Clooney said. "You don't want it to look like a film that was all done in the computer."

Clooney said that by moving the film to February, he was steering clear of what he considered the most crowded holiday movie season in memory, which he and Heslov feared could hurt "The Monuments Men" at the box office.

But the Christmas season is jammed with big movies for a reason: theater attendance is high. In the last eight years, only one February release — this year's Melissa McCarthy-Jason Bateman comedy "Identity Thief" — has grossed more than $130 million at the domestic box office. And Sony already has one movie scheduled for wide release in February: the remake of "Robocop."

The delay of "The Monuments Men" also leaves the studio, which has suffered through a grim year at the box office with the flops "After Earth" and "White House Down," with only one wide release between now and Dec. 27, when David O. Russell's "American Hustle" opens nationally.

"The good news for us is that we're really happy to buy ourselves a month," Clooney said. "I can't tell you how relieved we are."

I feel bad for them though...although I am glad they realized rushing it could hurt the film. Leatherheads got delayed also and that didn't turn out so well. On the other hand Gravity was also delayed and that became a good thing....

I feel so bad but they know best. I know we all were looking forward and counting the days; to see MM.Very proud that they are the type to rather have it be perfect and delayed, the on time and not 100%. Thanks for the find SG.

Blimey, a 16-hour scoring session with a 110-piece orchestra.......well, good luck to them on that basis alone!

If you think about, I suppose being crowded out by Scorcese and O'Russell at Christmas in time for the Oscars sounds like pressure enough to me.

Buying themselves another month takes them to.....?

That's weird! I have read somewhere a review of a test screen of the movie, and I remember that the reviewer said that they told them the score is not official yet or something of the sort, he didn't say anything about the visual effects. I hope things are going well for the movie, cuz the studio seemed to want it in the awards season and now they pushed out of it!

Another potential Oscar contender has exited the awards race: Sony is moving Monuments Men from its original Dec. 18 release date to an unspecified date in February of 2014, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday.

“We just didn’t have enough time,” director and star George Clooney said. “If any of the effects looked cheesy, the whole movie would look cheesy.”

Clooney’s World War II film is based on the true story of a band of historians and art dealers who were sent behind enemy lines to retrieve stolen art from the Nazis. The all-star cast includes Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, John Goodman and Jean Dujardin.

This isn’t the first movie generating Academy Award buzz that has been pushed to next year: Fox Catcher, The Immigrant and Grace of Monaco have also vacated the 2013 Oscar Race. Paramount has changed Martin Scorcese’s The Wolf of Wall Street several times already this fall; the film may yet be pushed to next year.

It means George isn't happy and he feels rushed. He ain't perfect. I say give him some time; he will get it right. Of course, I like Leatherheads; I met him because of it.

Oh wow, really long wait for the movie. Want to see it so badly. But well. I kind of believe that they might can't finish it in time but I think the main reason is really that too many movies come out in December and it is hard to stick out. I say there is a tactic behind it. A good one Laughing 

But of course just guessing.

Oh if you think about. The movie would have come out in December and it was planed to do the german premier on the 2nd January (it was somewhere written here in the forum) that wouold have meant for Geroge no propper Christmas holiday. I'm sure he is relieved now Very Happy

I don't think it bodes well that the movie is being delayed. But Christmas is a big time for movies so it will do better with a February release with less competition. I refuse to believe that they weren't hoping for awards with this film. There has been Oscar buzz about this movie and the cast is stellar. It had nothing to do with Gravity. MM is George's baby and he just a small, supporting role in Gravity. A February release means nominations for Oscars are slim, but Silence of the Lambs was released in February of 1991 and it cleaned up at the Academy Awards. It could still happen.

I just want the movie to be 1) excellent and 2) successful at the box office. We'll just have to wait a bit longer.

Movies released that early in the year tend to get forgotten by the next Oscars I think, especially if it is a strong movie year. I don't think it has anything to do with Gravity or Sandra's chances--like there is no "best actress" role in MM from what we've seen.

I am a little worried that he described it as "commercial"--hope it's not too slapstick like Leatherheads......

Besides Gravity he would also be competing with August Osage County. I believe he is one of the producers of that film. I am somewhat concerned about the release date of MM because as so many have stated the beginning of the year is usually the time when films that are not considered award worthy are released.

I don't think George was worried about xmas , it seems he just want the film to be the best that he and Grant can make it. I also don't see him taking a break he likes to work and there is still plenty of work to be done.

Mmmm...I don't know.  Maybe the film's not done to his liking.  I think it's interesting to look at the delay from the perspective of what George has done with the film so far.  First trailer released made it look like "Ocean's 11 in War-torn Europe!", funny, light, commercial.  Then we had the Toronto Film Festival, and suddenly all anyone could talk about was 12 Years a Slave, and Gravity, and other more solemn, dramatic films.  Cut to the second MM trailer:  darker, more serious, portentous voiceover about saving civilization.  Clearly meant as a "Hey, my movie's important too!", at least to me.  So yeah, maybe George and Scorsese and the other filmmakers are moving because they aren't ready (although I feel like I've been seeing previews of The Wolf of Wall Street for years at this point).  But maybe everyone has seen 12 Years a Slave now, and is getting the heck out of the way.  Either way, I bet George is happy to have one less film to not-shill during his non-Oscar campaigns this year.  Wink

I realize that might sound harsh, but I don't think badly of him for it at all. He's very smart, and I think he took a look at the field, realized, "Hey, we're not going home with any trophies this year," and decided not to push it. Don't blame him. But I do think if it were a weaker award season, Monuments Men would be released in December as planned. Any other year, a film about WWII and saving art with MM's pedigree would be a serious contender, and George would kill himself for a serious shot at a Best Director Oscar.

It could be that it is the special effects like he says. Maybe he felt they are being rushed and don't look right. If the story is good then he really just needs to market it correctly. If he can get a handle on the marketing and find the sweet spot of who will enjoy it then he should be ok. This has the potential of doing well if he can get word of mouth behind it.

True but I am sure he will have a hand in marketing...and maybe he can talk to them about release date.  Hopefully they will play it smart.  He is after all also the producer....which means he has more say.  Besides Sony needs a win and if they play their cards right this could be a big one for them.


Oh and they owe him because he defended them against that guy Loeb....there has to be a collaboration and they really need to do it right.

It is not just awards MM would be competing for in Dec., it would be box office money. A good movie in a packed movie season might not do as well and seem like a bit of a failure due to the competition. Another time of year and it could be the big box office winner for a few weeks.

EXCLUSIVE: Last night, Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox moved the George Clooney-directed Monuments Men from December 18 to early next year. It took less than an hour for internet wonks to look for signs of trouble, even though Clooney said he simply couldn’t complete the visual effects and music in time to make the date. Rather than watch a repeat of what his pal Brad Pitt went through when people were inscribing World War Z headstones before anybody saw that film, Clooney asked for the opportunity to explain on Deadline. Who says no to George Clooney?

He was troubled enough to call from the Abbey Road Studios in London after reading a ridiculous “exclusive” Sharon Waxman splash on The Wrap that claimed that Clooney had confided that his struggles were over tone. “I was talking awhile ago about Gravity, she says how’s it going on Monuments Men and I say, it’s a tricky tone, and she writes this piece that the movie is in trouble over tone. She doesn’t call me, and it’s absolutely ridiculous and false.”

What is sounds like to me is the same situation that Martin Scorsese went through with Paramount when they could not get Shutter Island ready in before year end and moved the film to a February 19, 2010 berth. It too moved out of the Oscar corridor, but like Monuments Men, it wasn’t viewed by the studio as an Oscar entry as much as for being a crowd pleasing potential blockbuster. All alone in the marketplace, Shutter Island grossed $128 million domestic and $295 million worldwide.

And when we were on the plane coming back with Jeff Blake, Amy Pascal and Michael Lynton, they said look, let’s be honest. There are lots better times to bring this movie out than December 18. How about November 22? Can you do it? Now, today is our first day at the scoring stages at Abbey Road. Then they call and ask, how about the 15th of November? We like to pull stuff off, and we said, let’s see what we can do. That was two days ago.”

Clooney then consulted the guys who are providing the effects, and got a dose of reality. “We had a meeting with all the effects guys for our CGI stuff, and, we’re just not going to get there in time,” he said. “Then we looked at the date we had, December 18. I don’t know how many movies are opening, but it’s got to be the toughest December in recent memory for box office. We said, where’s another good place to land? And we looked at February and the Shutter Island slot.”

Coverage was inevitable because the film exited the Oscar corridor, but Clooney denied that was the film’s priority. “When we started this movie, we said all along this was something we wanted to do in the tradition of The Guns Of Navarone and The Great Escape,” Clooney said. “That’s what we wanted all along and we took the date because we’d had so much luck on it with Ocean’s Eleven and Ocean’s Twelve. We wanted it to play through the holidays. Last night we had a nice meeting and said, let’s be honest. We’re not going to get our effects done in time. As hard as we’re working, the truth of the matter is, we only started principal photography on this in March. So the idea we’d have all the effects ready was a stretch anyway. And we didn’t make it. It’s that simple. It’s certainly not about tone of the film, because it’s testing through the roof. We said, let’s just find a spot where the movie can find an actual audience instead of fighting with 22 other films in December.”

There is another good reason for swapping dates. As soon as he finishes Monuments Men, Clooney said he will be shooting the Brad Bird-directed Disney film Tomorrowland until mid-January. “I wasn’t going to be able to do much publicity for Monuments Men, which certainly factored into us saying, why are we running like crazy to get this out for a Christmas release, when that has become all about chasing Oscars?

“We’ve been very clear that we’re trying to make our first un-cynical film, a commercial movie,” he said. “You can tell by the cast we put together that it’s going to have light tones to it. We never thought that chasing Oscars was our play, we said it from the first interview. This is a movie we want audiences to see without alienating people like a lot of our films have. What I loved was that Sony and Fox listened and said, okay, let’s get out of here. We’d rather the movie be successful and have you put it out when you’re comfortable with how it looks. This is a period film and it can’t look like CG. It has to look like it’s real. We’re close, but we’re not there yet.”

Despite the extra time, Clooney all day has been facing the music, but in a good way.

“I’m standing in front of Abbey Road right now, and Alexander Desplat is in there with a 100 piece orchestra, and I have to tell you, there’s nothing like it,” Clooney said. “I grew up around music and orchestras with my aunt Rosemary. It’s just a completely different language and it’s just so much fun to sit in this room with everybody running in to see Alexander conduct.”

I ask Clooney if he would have had the stones to go in there and tell Desplat that he was racing to make a release date, and could he play faster.

“You don’t say ‘Pick up the pace pal’ to a guy like that,” Clooney said. “That just doesn’t work.”

God Bless George, now I hope media gets it right. He laid it all out nice and plain and simple that even I understand. So maybe the rags will too. George is not going to put something out that is not up to his standards and as always I respect him for that. Love you

Couldn't agree more, Jo. Man of Integrity. Oh, and clearly in awe of the orchestra experience. Maybe he should try a classical concert ( a Prom maybe) if he hasn't already.

Great that he's called out the media again...(just checked on TheWrap - owned by venture capitalists).......and given the story to Nicky Finke's lot

EXCLUSIVE: Last night, Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox moved the George Clooney-directed Monuments Men from December 18 to early next year. It took less than an hour for internet wonks to look for signs of trouble, even though Clooney said he simply couldn’t complete the visual effects and music in time to make the date. Rather than watch a repeat of what his pal Brad Pitt went through when people were inscribing World War Z headstones before anybody saw that film, Clooney asked for the opportunity to explain on Deadline. He was troubled enough to call from the Abbey Road Studios in London after reading a ridiculous “exclusive” Sharon Waxman splash on The Wrap that claimed that Clooney had confided that his struggles were over tone. “I was talking awhile ago about Gravity, she says how’s it going on Monuments Men and I say, it’s a tricky tone, and she writes this piece that the movie is in trouble over tone. She doesn’t call me, and it’s absolutely ridiculous and false.”

What is sounds like to me is the same situation that Martin Scorsese went through with Paramount when they could not get Shutter Island ready in before year end and moved the film to a February 19, 2010 berth. It too moved out of the Oscar corridor, but like Monuments Men, it wasn’t viewed by the studio as an Oscar entry as much as for being a crowd pleasing potential blockbuster. All alone in the marketplace, Shutter Island grossed $128 million domestic and $295 million worldwide.

I also want to see it... but I am willing to wait ...

There is a right time, and right place for everything.

Also, you can never, never tell what will grab the imagination or curiosity of "Joe & Josephine Public".  You simply cannot guess it, and TIMING can be critical...fate.

In any creative process, what you make for public consumption is always a gamble, sometimes a thrilling gamble, sometimes something that comes at you "left of field" ... you just did not expect, but will be equally good, or even better !

George was born under a lucky star ... this will work, he is, as an earlier poster said SMART ... it will work, but even he doesn't know in exactly what way or direction... He only has to ask his friend Mr Cuaron ..... JMO  Thumbs up!

No point releasing a film if it's not what the director envisioned and needs final touches. It's an unfinished product.

Sony may even decide to release it later on, so maybe not February.

I guess both he & the distributor would decide best time to release it. Sony would accommodate his preferences.

Delivering a film he's directed & produced to its utmost best in his vision is a great sign.

It has the formula to be very successful: unique, interesting concept based on historical facts in published book, brilliant cast, great locations.

Delaying it only builds the anticipation momentum & gives it even more publicity.
