Al Pacino, George Clooney, Johnny Depp: Great Moments in Guyliner History

If the eyes are windows to the soul then there's a whole lot more guyliner than usual smudging the panes of Johnny Depp's spirit, as you may have noticed if you were watching the Super Bowl last night and caught the ad for the next installment of Pirates of the Caribbean. Seems that Depp, an early adapter of "guyliner" and "manscara" (see Don Juan de Marco. a lovely 1995 comedy), has borrowed kohl crayons from Ozzy Osbourne's makeup kit.

When did the obvious smoky eye cross over from guy rockers to male movie stars? I had thought that Depp introduced it and it got picked up by other brown-eyed boys like George Clooney But then I remembered that Al Pacino's lined lower lids in Scarface (1983) had definite assistance from Revlon. And that Omar Sharif's sable-lashed eyes in Funny Girl (1968) were thicker than those of co-star Barbra Streisand. (In "Sadie, Sadie," she sings a lyric apposite to this discussion: "To tell the truth it hurt my pride/the groom was prettier than the bride"). George Clooney's inner lids are shaded like those of a Labrador Retriever in Michael Clayton (2007) and Up in the Air (2009).

Other great moments in guyliner history? Are you a fan of the trend? Me, I prefer subtle to emo.

I guess I need to go back and watch those movies. I don't remember guyliner on George. Can't believe I wasn't paying attention.

I don't think he was. I think it's just that he has thick eyelashes so it often looks like he has eyeliner on.

I could be wrong of course!

It's been reported many times that he doesn't even wear cover-up makeup on film, I think it's hight unlikely that he'd wear eyeliner. My guess is that he needed a little sleep and whatever shadow this person saw were probably natural.
