The North Okanagan's brush with stardom is over.
Walt Disney Pictures' Tomorrowland concluded production in the Enderby-Grindrod-Armstrong area on the weekend.

"We had a great time," said Lee Anne Muldoon, the film's publicist.

The $250 million movie, which stars George Clooney and Hugh Laurie, began production in the North Okanagan Aug. 19.

A $250,000,000 budget??!! Fuuuuuuuuuck. I hope that's a typo. It would take half a billion dollars just to break even, before anybody makes any money. Big risk (and a kind of dumb one), if it's true.

George Clooney filming in the North Okanagan Empty Re: George Clooney filming in the North Okanagan

Post by Way2Old4Dis Tue 17 Sep 2013, 21:00

I just took a quick look at the cast, and (naturally) GC is the biggest name in it. There are a lot of named characters, but Judy Greer and Hugh Lurie top those. They have a star director, who also co-wrote the screenplay. Assuming George is taking his pay upfront (and I'd think he would: it's not his production, and there probably won't be much backend to get in line for), let's say they're spending $25M on talent -- all actors, including extras, of which there are probably many), and Brad Bird is commanding a pretty penny, let's guesstimate another $15M for the screenplay and direction. Legal services, assistant director(s), talent add-ons... another $10M, being generous. Above-the-line costs $50M, or 20% of the budget, being conservative.

That still leaves a hell of a lot of room to get to the $250M mark. Granted, a movie like this will probably be heavy on special effects. That's big money. And they have Phil Collins doing the soundtrack. Another low-seven-figures. A period piece, or a movie that has scenes from different time periods, costs more for costume, makeup, set design, etc.

Multiple locations, lots of effects = more money.

They're shooting in places that have tax incentives, and comparatively low production costs. So they will make some savings on production. But still... Two hundred and fifty million dollars. Geez.

If you use the rule of thumb and say the P&A (prints and advertising) budget roughly equals the production costs, that still means they have a production budget of $125M, which is astronomical by any standards. I could make 4 or 5 really good movies with that.

I assume they're banking on a very strong international box office...

But, what do I know? They're Disney, and I'm an anonymous schmuck on a fan forum.

I would argue that George Clooney is not worth 20 million a picture. Not that I don't love him. Love his movies. Love him. However, if I am to be honest, his movies don't ever hit those huge box office numbers. Therefore, he shouldn't be paid that much, and I have heard him say many times that he doesn't rape a budget. Lets hope he does his negotiating work in some creative way, like take some of the back end of the film if it does well.

Ktsue, that's what he does for his own films, but who knows in a film like this where he has no other ties except to act in them. I can't imagine that he would DEMAND $20 million, but get it on the other side. He's got too many projects going to do everything for "free".

ktsue2002 you don't think that George is worth as much as DiCaprio and the others? All his movies aren't always the biggest box office money makers because he chooses movies that have substance and that have a meaning for him. When needed he also makes the Ocean type movies. He is not the number one in Hollywood for nothing I'm sure. Also he does more to build up his fellow stars than himself.

As far as money up front, he hasn't taken any since "The Perfect Storm". You can read this in one of the "Hedge Fund" articles on here. Sure he needs the money like everyone else but with George that is not primary because he is a very honorable person. Like he has stated many times if he needs money, he's not too proud to make commercials to earn extra, When he was doing ER and started getting other offers he never once tried to get out of his commitment to that show. Like many others have gotten out of there contract he would never do something like that.

If George demanded more per movie I believe he would get it. However to him the overall project is more important than his dollar amount. As time goes on and the George Clooneys have retire you will a lot of trash coming out. You will not have the dedication to film making. I hope I don't come off as "snarky" because that is not what I'm intending, not feeling good today so I might not be picking the right words. It's that I think GTC is worthy of being the highest paid just not his style.

You're right, but I just don't think it would be smart to count on getting anything on the backend from a project that has to make half a billion just to avoid the red ink. I think he'd ask for it, just out of good business. But I'd be willing to bet that this gig came with an upfront paycheck -- maybe a majority percentage of his quote, with the balance and points on the backend. If it makes money, great. But if it doesn't, he hasn't worked for free. If I were his agent, I wouldn't let him risk not getting paid.

After all, as somebody already said, he's basically a hired gun for this movie. Equity-wise, he doesn't have a dog in the race. Unless he's just being nice and doing somebody a favor, there's no reason not to take a conventional payment for his work. Disney doesn't need Clooney's financial help, especially since they put together 250 million freaking bucks to make one movie.

JMHO, of course.

Oh, yes, you are right Mazy! I didn't see it before. Thank you. I thought this thread was about where GC actually is at the moment....while others were more specific.

Regarding his shirt, I think it is something like tourquise - between green and blue.

I hope one day I will find something new and be the first one to post it here...Idea

This is just my opinion, but this is what defines a true actor for me. Not the money they rake in. But how long they act. There ar e alot of brilliant actors who makes ga-zillion dollars for two or three movies, then retire. There are actors that work until they get their Oscar, then retire. Then there are REAL actors that win Oscars, make a bunch of money and continue to act, because they are actors. Like George.

I think I need to clarify my statement. Personally, YES, I do think he deserves every penny gets for all of the dedication he puts towards his craft. He REALLY does work very hard, and I love that man and his movies. However, if I looked at the money made for his films, if he took 20 million per pick, in many cases, it would essentially rape the budget on some of his smaller projects and he has stressed that he doesn't want to rape a budget. Think about something like Ides of March, which was made with less than 12 million, if he took a huge chunk up front, that movie would cost at least 40 or 50 million dollars. Yes, in most cases, he can get people to the theater to his movies, but if he were to refocus and try to do just big budget movies, it would too costly a venture for the film companies and the people backing these projects. I don't care who the person is, if they can't get $300 million worth of butts to a theater, 20 million for one actor will continue to be too high a price, and film companies will remember that when the actor is up for another part. Also, one last thing, remember he has said, if he has too many bombs, they take away his toys. I don't want them to take away his toys anytime soon, so he has to continue to pick out the smarter projects and if he finds one that may potential translate to big bucks for a film company, those toys will continue to sit in his garage while he obtains more toys. That is why its called SHOW BUSINESS. Anyway, YES he does deserve 20 million a picture, but not everyone agrees with me. Therefore, he has to appeal to the masses.

Absolutely, George is truly an actor of great substance. In my opinion the salary amount itself was not as important as it being said that he was not worth as much others. George could demand and get more money. He just has his own magnanimous code of ethics, which is why he doesn't believe in taking a salary up front.

He might have taken some up front for Tomorrowland but I will bet he didn't take all. He seems to think that an actor should also share in the burden of the outcome of the film. He also knows that some of the films that he chooses to make will not be big box office ones. However they are ones that are important to GEORGE for whatever reason. As I've said before I love the man George, not the persona of George. He's a man that has a tremendous amount of scruples, he and his sister were raised wonderfully.
The media hasn't dubbed him "The Last Great Movie Star" for nothing.
