Remembering 9-11 Empty Re: Remembering 9-11

Post by Nicky80 Wed 11 Sep 2013, 23:10

Thanks Melbert for remembering that date.

I watched the news today and it seems like it is nearly forgotten. Can be lucky if it get mentioned for a minute.

Poor people who died and poor families who lost someone in this attack.

I have not been an victim of this attack but I have been a tourist at the time. I went with my best friends to NY and our return flight should have been in the evening of the 11th September.

I was in the bathroom on the morning of the 11th September doing my my hair when my friend shout my name to come and see whats on TV. First plane hit the WTC. What an accident we thought. Went back to the bathroom....My friend called me again. Second plane just hit. Later the first tower crashed. I never forget the conversation we had after the second tower crashed. My friend said: "we can't fly out tonight, look at the fire and smoke. And I just said (not realising how serious it was) "Oh until the evening they have killed the fire I'm sure we can fly". Well I was wrong. Four days trapped in NY.

We went to the reception of the hotel and they used the moment wisely and started to charge us triple the amount per night.

All credit cards were blocked it was not possible to pay by card anymore or get money out of the machine. My family had to send me money via Western Union there was no other way. The German embassy gave us a daily amount of money which wasn't much.

The hotel we were in received several bomb thread from those stupid copycats who thought it was funny and we were evacuated nearly every night.

There were crazy rumors that Sadam Hussain wanted to send atom bombs to NY. Fight jet flew over NY all the time.

All hospitals were closed as everyone were expecting lot of bad injured people. But they were none as they were dead. A doctor told us as we went to the hospital and asking for food. No kidding. All shops closed. That hospital was so nice they gave us so many sandwiches and told us to share with other people in the hotel.

Most people left Manhattan expect of the tourists like us. Were were standing alone at the time square ALONE. Imagine.

You could smell the smoke the ashes were everywhere. The ambulance would drive to ground zero and look clean and would return all grey covered by ashes.

On the fourth or fifth day the German embassy called us early morning before 6am and told us that only 4 planes from each airline company are allowed to fly out today. We went to the airport JFK early morning to see if we get on the plane. It was a big mess at the airport. Millions of people. We were lucky to get on the plane on the last one the fourth plane of the day and we flew out after 23:00. All day several bomb threat at JFK. It was crazy. Some families got spilt up and had to leave people behind as not everyone got on a list to get on a plane.

For sure I will never forget.

Remembering 9-11 Empty Re: Remembering 9-11

Oh my Nicky.....what an experience to live through.
I bet you couldn't believe what was happening around you.

We were planning to sell our house and the agent was booked for that day....she arrived at 5pm while it was all happening on TV.
My husband was employed by an American company and we just didn't know what was going to happen to our safe little world. So postponed our house move until the
following Spring....as did 25% of the market in UK
at the time.

I still remember the pain and tears shed during
those days.
I also remember most vividly the first anniversary vigil
At Ground Zero and watched every minute of it and cried all through it. Someone there commented on the unusual strong wind blowing all the time. Very symbolic.
