Technical questions
We're just figuring this out, too. If you have any problems, or questions about how to do something, post it here and let's see if we can work our a solution.

Re: Technical questions
Katie, I guess I'm not real bright, but how do you read everybody else's posts? A few I've clicked on have the other's messages, but most I cannot figure out how to read what everyone else has posted. Sorry to be so dumb?!?!

@Mel...i think i'm beginning to figure this all out. What i do click the little yellow envelope at the far right of each thread. If you haven't read the latest post the envelope is yellow...after you read it it's white. Hope that helps!

Okay, I am now officially computer-retarded. The only envelope I see is if you want to e-mail to somebody.

Hi Merlin, when I clicked on that, it still didn't open some of them. What I've been doing now is on the left side where it scrolls posts, I just click on to them. I'll keep playing and see what else I can find. Thanks for your help!

Katie, this is great - Thank You!
One question (and I may find it myself, but I haven't really explored everything yet) - is there a "Recent Unread Topics" facilty as there is on the CNCU Forum?

Re: Technical questions
I think i may have figured it out Mel...i somehow am "watching" a bunch of topics. I think that may be why i have the envelope and they send you an email when someone replies to your post. I'm not sure how i signed up for it but at the bottom of this post there's a thing that says "stop watching this topic". Do you have one that says "watch this topic"?

I've gotten that message before too Maven. I don't have "watch this topic" that I know of. But, I just clicked "stop" when I didn't want to watch.

Re: Technical questions
I guess still one more question. When I click into any of the topics that have multiple threads in them (like in the Girls one), I still can't get into comments. I think Eli has a couple stories in there and I can read the article, but not see any comments. Did that confuse everybody?

Re: Technical questions
The layout of this site is really different from blogs which I think may be confusing everyone.
For example, the Ely thread has a bunch of stories on and mixed in between the stories are the comments (if there are any comments - there weren't when I left last night which would have been mid-morning for you).
What I did was make one thread with a whole bunch of Betty stories on them. I'm thinking maybe it would be easier if I made a new thread for each story?
Let me know which works better for you.

The best way to find your way around a forum is to log in. Then click on the picture of George at the top left. This will bring you to an index of all the threads on this site.
Just above the index is a link that says something like 'view posts since last visit'. Click on that and it'll bring you up a list of all the new posts.

FYI - on the home page, the "circle" on the left of a Thread Group turns red when a new topic or post is made in that category.

Also, once inside a Thread Group, the "circle" turns red for the individual threads when there is a new post.

Hm, not sure. What I'm really hoping it is, is a system for thanking people. You give them a '+' if you like their comment and a '-' if it's an unhelpful comment.sisieq wrote:To the right of a poster's comment and just left of the poster's name/box - what is the + - for

Ok, as you can all tell, I'm playing around a little with the look of this place. I know it's December but I'm feeling autumnal, so there you go.
Is it me, or does the text seem to have got smaller? I'm also not sure why we're suddenly in French, either. Will see if I can change the ugly buttons.

Please Katie, change the ugly colour too. What was wrong with the nice blue colour? I know, I know, I'm forever complaining about colour changes, but I just don't get this urge to change things that are perfectly fine! If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Yeah, one of mine was too - in fact I did a lot of the painting - and it's an absolutely lovely colour for a kitchen, but not for a blog. Not IMHO anyway, LOL!

No, I don't think Blue is a good idea. Katie, I haven't reached my quota to send a PM and would rather not explain why "no blue" here. Any color, but blue. Will send over on IMDB.

Re: Technical questions
Hi guys
I don't like the blue - it's cold, way too technical and looks like other forums. A cheerful yellow is fine by me.
Oddly I also had a kitchen this colour. Was there some marketing going on in the mid-90s to get people to paint kitchens this colour??

Re: Technical questions
Not really technical, but I've been checking around the forum a little every time I check in. It says I haven't reached the number of posts needed to use PM feature. Do you know how many posts are needed before private messaging is enabled?

Re: Technical questions
Whoops! Nevermind the question about PM. Must be 20 posts because that function is now enabled for me. I KNEW I should have just kept posting and not asked.

If we click on someone's name and on profile page to the list to the left this is one of the items - "Clooney-liciousness" I only looked at a few names to see if anyone has a #, it seems we all have 0 except for Katie who has 3 (I think)
What is it?

Re: Technical questions
Ah, Clooney-liciousness. It's a scoring system that I created when I set up this forum. Seeing as this site is only a week old, you'd think I'd remember what it was, but no.
I think it's to do with the number of posts - or it could be the number of times someone's thanked you (using the small + or - symbols to the right of a person's post). One or the other.

Re: Technical questions
Katie is there any way to set the forum search, so that each time you open a thread to read the "new" posts that it takes you to where you left off reading on your last visit? I can pull up everything that's been posted since my last visit but unless you know exactly where on the thread you left off reading, you have to reread everything to find the newest posts (scrolling by date helps somewhat)

Hi Lighter
Yes, and the instructions on how to do this are scrolling across the top of the screen!
You log in and then click 'view posts since last visit' which is near the top of the index!

Re: Technical questions
I like the "alerts" I get in my email. That way if I don't have time to come directly here, I can get "caught up" by the recent posts. Also, the scrolling on the left side "latest topics" is really helpful if you don't want to go through every page. Just my observations - and since I'm so scatter-brained most of the time, this allows me to mellow out and enjoy the ride!!!

Re: Technical questions
I've circled where the 'view posts since last visit' link is on this screenshot below. You need to log in, in order to see this link, and when you click on it, it brings up a list of every single post since you were last here.
To get back to the index once you've read a topic, just click on the photo of George at the top of the screen. Or you can use the 'back' arrow on your computer.

Re: Technical questions
Yes, I saw that Katie and have been using it. What I was asking is, at Kimber's forum when you hit a similar button it takes you to WHERE in that particular thread you left off reading. I don't know HOW but every time I would check in the same day or the next day, if I had read part of a page and then came back it would take me to the NEXT posts on that page that had been subsequently posted since I visited last.
Am I making myself clear or did I confuse you even more trying to explain what I mean? In orther words, if there were 5 posts on a page when I left, it would bring me back to that thread but drop me off right at post #6 between the last one I read and the new one just posted.
Here, it takes you to the top of the thread and you have to scroll through it and try to remember which of the posts you have already read.

Is it still in the new forum?

Sends an e-mail when someone replies to a topic you have posted in. This can be changed whenever you post.
In my preferences, I have this set to "no". But, I keep getting posts in my e-mail.

Re: Technical questions
I may be wrong Sisieq, but I think you need to hit "stop watching this topic" just above the reply box to stop the emails. I think too that any new topic will be sent until you hit that. I kind of like it, as I said the other day, because I might not have the time to fully come in and look around, so I can pick and choose what I want to read right away and come back later for the full dose. Yeah, that drives me crazy and I can't find a way to default to 'no' in the settings. What I do is, instead of using the 'quick reply' I always use the 'reply to this topic' at the top (and bottom) of the thread. This screen gives you the option to 'notify me when a reply is posted' which I un-check.
If I forget to do this, I remember to click 'stop watching this topic' on the thread itself.

Seriously, this is a setting I've put to stop spammers (or at least slow them) so that you can only post once a minute. You're a fast reader and typist if you're regularly getting through posts quicker than that!!
