DEALING WITH TROLLS

Post by theminis on Mon Aug 26 2013, 23:21

Hi Everyone

As you can see the site had a visit from a pesky Troll fairy today - so please note the following:

NOT-A-Bot has now been banned, most posts that I have found have been vaporised.

I know that some of the posts can be upsetting or even downright humorous at times, but please try not to engage with them, that is exactly what the poster wants and as you can see this particular one got downright cruel and nasty. I would suggest its best to put them on the ignore list straight away and then Katie or one of the Moderators will deal with them -i.e. ban, pastebin, forget!!!

Thanks, hope you all have a lovely day/night.

Well that was some extreme, hostile, hardcore trolling gone from worse to the worst. Pretty ugly online meltdown and odd timing.

Seriously I wouldn´t call it trolling anymore. Purpose was not to annoy or disrupt or flame discussion. Not usual to have many "victims" on "manifestos" like that.

It is waste of resources even bothering with this, but good to keep in mind a person like that, researching people´s identities, pictures, following them obsessively can be a real threat and not a troll at all.

I find it a bit alarming VFF and tight security was mentioned on person´s posts. Probably the last side anyone who ever went there would bring up, as it is expected and normal procedure. It means, it is or has been an issue of interest.

Ignore, block, what else. Maybe something should be done.

This isn't news to you at all. You've been posting here for some time, Best in Category and after you left here, you went on to make many of the same claims yourself about this site. Let's not pretend that you're some newbie who's 'astonished' or 'alarmed' by any of this.

playfuldeb wrote:Sorry - my bad - I didnt know the ettiquette in troll behaviour so I was trying to get her to burst. Again - apologies
No worries, no harm done. Just be aware in future that you can't get them to 'burst'. She thrives on the attention she gets, so just ignore her.

My point was and is that what happened yesterday is illegal. Verbal wars are not trolling. Like Clooney-Loeb thing. You can say the same thing behind anonymity or with your face.

If the same happened in bright daylight person walked up to you and said: I will attack you everywhere, I´m onto you, I will monitor every step you take. Your face, twitter, blog being full of hate messages and threats - would you laugh at it or call the police.

One ordinary girl living in London has a very popular blog, where comments started to get nasty (nowhere near what has been seen here) 3 people got fined. It really hurt her blog readers went from thousands to tens, so did her income from the blog. She now knows who they are. So it happens. Making a person accountable for their writings is very effective way to put end to it.

This of course is none of my business, even though it seems I have this person "breathing on my user name´s back". But it´s what it is in internet, doesn´t make it acceptable but I don´t have a problem with it. Hopefully others won´t either. Smile

What i do find surprising is that with twitter there has been a lot of people who have been fined/charged over the past few months with their comments against other users due to the detail of what they are saying, at the end of the day to me writing is the same as speaking and anyone who is writing anything in a threatning or abusive manner should be named and shamed, there really is no need for it.

I didnt see the comments from the troll that was on here recently, completely missed that but i do worry about someones mind if thats all they come to do on the Internet is write abusive comments against people they don't know/claim to know or maybe do know and have a grudge for some stupid reason, very sad Sad

Not really. You, like the nutjob, don't really understand the meaning of libel. For it to be libel, the person has use a real named person, not an online nickname. Anyone can say what they want about 'Katiedot' or 'Carla97' because these are anonymous names that mean nothing to anyone. But as soon as a person's real name is mentioned, it does become illegal.

Likewise with threats. 'Katiedot' is just a bunch of pixels on your computer screen and you can make as many threats against those pixels as you wish. It has no more validity than threatening the tooth fairy. However, threaten me with my real name and you've got yourself a law suit.

Thankfully not a problem for me: I make no money from this site and it makes no difference how many people visit here. As long as there are Clooney fans, this site will exist.

Liable issue? The law was lacking behind before, but has caught up. There was a big change in it last year or so. Online anonymity is no sure thing in libel cases anymore in either way.

Growing number of people have web pages, blogs, twitters under pen name, same with artists, writers and people running their businesses. They all have rights even though their own birth names are not exposed.

As theminis says, find some self control. Otherwise yes, we can stop you from replying by closing your account.

Carla97 wrote:Online anonymity is no sure thing in libel cases anymore in either way.
Yes, the people COMMITTING the libel can't hide behind anonymity any more, that's correct. But that's not what we're talking about here; we're talking about the people BEING libelled.

In order to be libelled, you have to show two things: firstly that the libel was intentionally done to harm you (and by extension you have to prove your reputation would sustain damage from the libel; in other words calling an alcoholic a drunkard isn't libellous if it can be shown that he/she really is a drunkard).

Secondly the libel has to be done to a real, actual, identifiable person in public. Which in this forum hasn't happened because our usernames aren't publicly identifiable with a real person. By public I mean widely known by everyone, not just the few people you're friends with online who may know the real person who posts using Carla97 as a nickname.

Carla97 wrote:Growing number of people have web pages, blogs, twitters under pen name, same with artists, writers and people running their businesses. They all have rights even though their own birth names are not exposed.
Yes, and this is what I'm saying. Pen names, stage names etc may not be real names, but they refer to a real person and are publicly identified with a real person.

So, legally that's the situation. In reality this doesn't give you guys licence to start off a flame war free-for-all. Just because it may be legal doesn't mean I'll allow it and I think you all already know that when the insults start flying, posters get shut down and have their accounts closed.

Yes so true what you wrote.

I think people expect far too much from lawyers and justice system in general. "Cheer up and get shit done by yourself. Don´t let the nonsense bother you. Losing a lot of money to lawyers won´t make you feel good about yourself " Best legal advice I have gotten and it was free. Very rare this to happen as lawyers are good at writing bills and they tend to see things like handshakes, introducing themselves and general chit chat as legal counseling. Razz

No lawyer here should be offended, I said lawyers are good... Laughing

The best way to kill a troll is not to feed him/her. Just ignore the posts. I know it is hard (on IMDb there are so many things I would LOVE to say) but, again, you are just giving THEM ammunition. That's what they want, the attention. Just like a little kid having a temper tantrum.

A reminder to everyone that our favourite troll is back.

It seems she lurves us and just can't bear to be away from this forum.

She, like all trolls, leads a sad and lonely life.  I really do mean that.  Her life is so empty that the only way she can get her kicks is to come online here and bait other other posters.  Annoying as she is, she deserves pity: your attention is the most attention she'll get all day.  In fact, it's probably the only attention she'll get.

Pity her.  Laugh at her (it's hard not to, I know).  And leave her well alone.

Thanks

And, if I can be forgiven for quoting myself, an update on how to spot a troll on this site:

Katiedot wrote:Trolls in general are easy to spot. They come to a website as newbie posters and write something inflammatory, often insulting other members of the site. They're looking for an argument and nothing delights them more than getting a response. They behave this way because their real lives are empty so this kind of attention, even though it's negative, is better than the nothing they usually get. Small and powerless in real life, the anger they generate from their posts gives them a sense of importance and strength. These kind of trolls are easy for everyone to spot. Best to ignore them.

Our own troll (aka the IMDb nutjob) is another type of troll altogether. She's an obsessed fan who's convinced herself that she's George's soulmate and will be marrying him. She tells herself crazy stories in order to convince herself that he's not cheating on her with Sarah/Elisabetta/Stacy/Amal/whoever, such as he's being forced to do this or that photos are photoshopped/greenscreened and so on. Her ramblings are that there's a secret reason behind why he's fake-dating these women (and now fake-married to).

The IMDb nutjob posts under a number of names here and initially comes across as convincing and plausible, and even likeable.

However, please remember that not every conspiracy theorist is our nutjob and it's possible for perfectly normal posters to share some of the nutjob's opinions. I'm not interested in starting a witch hunt or creating an atmosphere of distrust or paranoia between posters.

Scientists create algorithm that ‘identifies future trolls from just five posts’

Alex Hern, The Guardian
17 Apr 2015 at 11:24 ET

It is possible to tell comment trolls apart from other users simply from looking at the way they write, researchers have found.

Studying the comments on three sites – CNN, Breitbart and IGN – over an 18 month period, the researchers at Cornell and Stanford universities found that users who went on to be banned wrote differently to other users in the same comment thread, using fewer words indicative of positive emotion.

Future banned users also tended to write comments that were more difficult to read than typical users, the researchers found.

“We find that such users tend to concentrate their efforts in a small number of threads, are more likely to post irrelevantly, and are more successful at garnering responses from other users,” the researchers add, in a pre-publication paper titled Antisocial Behavior in Online Discussion Communities.

“Studying the evolution of these users from the moment they join a community up to when they get banned, we find that not only do they write worse than other users over time, but they also become increasingly less tolerated by the community.

The researchers also discovered that antisocial behaviour was exacerbated when moderation appears to be overly harsh.

The researchers studied more than 35m posts sent from almost 2 million users on the three websites under investigation, and found nearly 50,000 individual users who had been banned over the 18 month period. They also examined the number of individual comments that had been deleted or reported to the site’s moderators, with all the data provided to the researchers by Disqus, the commenting platform used by all three sites.

They focused their investigation on the 50,000 users banned over the period under examination, and attempted to find tell-tale signs in their prior posts that acted as an indicator for their later behaviour.

They discovered that users who would end up being banned from the site often wrote noticeably different to the main bulk of commenters. “Users can stay on-topic or veer off-topic; prior work has also shown that users tend to adopt linguistic conventions or jargon in a community … and that they also unconsciously mimic the choices of function-word classes they are communicating with.” Sure enough, they found that “text similarity” of banned users was significantly lower than that of non-banned users.

Additionally, the posts of banned users had similar word counts to those of non-banned, but when tested against a standard readability index were revealed to be significantly harder to read.

On top of the information found in the actual posts, the authors also found that users who would go on to be banned interacted differently with the community at large. “For instance, [future banned users] tended to spend more time in individual threads than [users who weren’t banned],” they write.

With all the information together, they created a prediction model which can guess with 80% accuracy whether or not that user will go on to be banned from just their first five posts. Looking at the first 10 raises the accuracy of the model by a further two percentage points, which raises the possibility of automatically highlighting potentially problematic users to moderators so that antisocial behaviour can be dealt with more quickly.

But the authors warn that overzealous moderation can have its own downside: “Taking extreme action against small infractions can exacerbate antisocial behaviour (e.g. unfairness can cause users to write worse) … Whereas trading off overall performance for higher precision and have a human moderator approve any bans is one way to avoid incorrectly blocking innocent users, a better response may instead involve giving antisocial users a chance to redeem themselves.”

Nicky and Lorna - Thanks! Nicky, is that why when I tried to log in to the NY Post article thread and the thread about the woman with the disabled daughter (both of which I posted in earlier) I got the message that "only users granted special access" could post in the forum? (Sorry for the too-long sentence! Embarassed ) The message had me really confused.

Thanks Lorna for your excellent work.

But now I can't read the bit about
my toes being sucked to hubby.  lol!

I did mention it to him but we were
eating dinner at the time !

Yes correct. Because I removed it that's why you could not access it anymore. The thread with the woman and disabled daughter i removed as strangers sometimes come online to post things like that to ask for money or something. For you guys being protected as a user we remove things like that when we get suspicious about it. And the other thread obvious as it was troll Alarm LOL. Every thread where you posted before was removed you can not access anymore and you get a Standard message like that. Hope that helps.

Nicky - OK. Gotcha. Thanks for the explanation. It's kind of what I thought. Thumbs up!
