My Medical Choice

By
ANGELINA JOLIE

Published:
May 14, 20

MY MOTHER fought cancer for
almost a decade and died at 56. She held out long enough to meet the first of
her grandchildren and to hold them in her arms. But my other children will
never have the chance to know her and experience how loving and gracious she
was.

We often speak of “Mommy’s mommy,” and I find myself trying to
explain the illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same
could happen to me. I have always told them not to worry, but the truth is I
carry a “faulty” gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer
and ovarian
cancer.

My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast
cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different
in the case of each woman.

Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene
mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65
percent risk of getting it, on average.

Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive
and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive
double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer
is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex.

On April 27, I finished the three months of medical procedures
that the mastectomies involved. During that time I have been able to keep this
private and to carry on with my work.

But I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can
benefit from my experience. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into
people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is
possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to
breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.

My own process began on Feb. 2 with a procedure known as a “nipple
delay,” which rules out disease in the breast ducts behind the nipple and draws
extra blood flow to the area. This causes some pain and a lot of bruising, but
it increases the chance of saving the nipple.

Two weeks later I had the major surgery, where the breast tissue
is removed and temporary fillers are put in place. The operation can take eight
hours. You wake up with drain tubes and expanders in your breasts. It does feel
like a scene out of a science-fiction film. But days after surgery you can be
back to a normal life.

Nine weeks later, the final surgery is completed with the
reconstruction of the breasts with an implant. There have been many advances in
this procedure in the last few years, and the results can be beautiful.

I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to
have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My
chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5
percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me
to breast cancer.

It is reassuring that they see nothing that makes them
uncomfortable. They can see my small scars and that’s it. Everything else is
just Mommy, the same as she always was. And they know that I love them and will
do anything to be with them as long as I can. On a personal note, I do not feel
any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no
way diminishes my femininity.

I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and
supportive. So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know
that you are a very important part of the transition. Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center,
where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find
moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our
family and that it would bring us closer. And it has.

For any woman reading this, I hope it helps you to know you have
options. I want to encourage every woman, especially if you have a family
history of breast or ovarian cancer, to seek out the information and medical
experts who can help you through this aspect of your life, and to make your own
informed choices.

I acknowledge that there are many wonderful holistic doctors
working on alternatives to surgery. My own regimen will be posted in due course
on the Web site of the Pink Lotus Breast Center. I hope that this will be
helpful to other women.

Breast cancer
alone kills some 458,000 people each year, according to the World Health
Organization, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. It has got to be a
priority to ensure that more women can access gene testing and lifesaving
preventive treatment, whatever their means and background, wherever they live.
The cost of testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2, at more than $3,000 in the United
States, remains an obstacle for many women.

I choose not to keep my story private because there are many women
who do not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is my
hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if they have a
high risk they, too, will know that they have strong options.

Life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us
are the ones we can take on and take control of.

Angelina Jolie's Medical Decision Empty Re: Angelina Jolie's Medical Decision

Post by Katiedot Sun 19 May 2013, 05:30

Well, this is all over facebook so I thought I'd share it here, with a caveat that I don't know how reliable 'natural news' is. It's very likely they also have an axe to grind.

http://www.naturalnews.com/040365_Angelina_Jolie_gene_patents_Supreme_Court_decision.html

EXPOSED: Angelina Jolie part of a clever corporate scheme to protect billions in BRCA gene patents, influence Supreme Court decision (opinion)

Thursday, May 16, 2013

by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger

(NaturalNews) Angelina Jolie's announcement of undergoing a double mastectomy (surgically removing both breasts) even though she had no breast cancer is not the innocent, spontaneous, "heroic choice" that has been portrayed in the mainstream media. Natural News has learned it all coincides with a well-timed for-profit corporate P.R. campaign that has been planned for months and just happens to coincide with the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court decision on the viability of the BRCA1 patent.

This is the investigation the mainstream media refuses to touch. Here, I explain the corporate financial ties, investors, mergers, human gene patents, lawsuits, medical fear mongering and the trillions of dollars that are at stake here. If you pull back the curtain on this one, you find far more than an innocent looking woman exercising a "choice." This is about protecting trillions in profits through the deployment of carefully-crafted public relations campaigns designed to manipulate the public opinion of women.

The signs were all there from the beginning of the scheme: Angelina Jolie's highly polished and obviously corporate-written op-ed piece at the New York Times, the carefully-crafted talking points invoking "choice" as a politically-charged keyword, and the obvious coaching of even her husband Brad Pitt who carefully describes the entire experience using words like "stronger" and "pride" and "family."

But the smoking gun is the fact that Angelina Jolie's seemingly spontaneous announcement magically appeared on the cover of People Magazine this week -- a magazine that is usually finalized for publication three weeks before it appears on newsstands. That cover, not surprisingly, uses the same language found in the NYT op-ed piece: "HER BRAVE CHOICE" and "This was the right thing to do." The flowery, pro-choice language is not a coincidence.

[katiedot note: the cover story didn't 'magically' appear: it was written by a journalist and printed on a machine, same as all their covers. While yes, they may usually need three weeks to produce a cover, they can also make something in a day or two too if the story's big enough. I'm only highlighting this point because the author uses emotive words like magically, when there's nothing at all mysterious about what he's describing - a sign he may be leading you up the conspiracy theory path]

What this proves is that Angelina's Jolie's announcement was a well-planned corporate P.R. campaign with carefully-crafted messages designed to influence public opinion. But what could Jolie be seeking to influence?

...how about trillions of dollars in corporate profits?

Upcoming U.S. Supreme Court decision to rule on patent viability for BRCA1 gene

Angelina Jolie's announcement and all its carefully-crafted language had four notable immediate impacts:

1) It caused women everywhere to be terrified of breast cancer through the publishing of false statistics that drove fear into the hearts of anyone with breasts. (See below for explanation.)

2) It caused women to rush out and seek BRCA1 gene testing procedures. These tests just happen to be patented by a for-profit corporation called "Myriad Genetics." Because of this patent, BRCA1 tests can cost $3,000 - $4,000 each. The testing alone is a multi-billion-dollar market, but only if the patent is upheld in an upcoming Supreme Court decision (see below).

3) It caused the stock price of Myriad Genetics (MYGN) to skyrocket to a 52-week high. "Myriad's stock closed up 3% Tuesday, following the publication of the New York Times op-ed," wrote Marketwatch.com.

4) It drove public opinion to influence the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court decision to rule in favor of corporate ownership of human genes (see more below).

Women all over the world are being duped into supporting Angeline Jolie, having no idea that what she's really doing is selling out women to the for-profit cancer industry. But to fully understand what's happening, you have to dig deeper...

Myriad Genetics sees stock price skyrocket thanks to Jolie, and Obamacare will funnel billions their way

[katiedot note: 'Obamacare'? another warning sign that this may not be an objective article]

"Salt Lake City-based Myriad Genetics (MYGN) holds the patent on the test that determined the actress had an 87% chance of developing breast cancer, as well as the genes themselves," wrote MarketWatch.com.

And that's only the beginning. If the U.S. Supreme Court can be influenced to uphold Myriad's patent, it could mean a trillion-dollar industry over just the next few years. Even more, Myriad Genetics is reportedly "ripe for mergers" according to the financial press, because it's part of the super-hot human genome industry.

"The world's largest maker of DNA testing and analysis tools, Life Technologies Corp. said that it is set to be acquired by Thermo Fisher Scientific for a record $13.6 billion," writes MarketWatch.com. "A race that kicked into high gear more than 26 years ago is heating up, with foreign governments and corporations joining the U.S. in funding the quest to map all the human genomes. And even as the recent flurry of mergers and acquisitions in the genomics space has spurred returns, investors still have opportunities to profit from this multibillion-dollar industry."

The higher Myriad's stock price goes, the more profitable a merger becomes for its current owners. So Jolie's P.R. stunt just happened to generate unknown millions of dollars in value for the very people who claim a patent monopoly over the breast cancer genes residing in the bodies of women. Coincidence? Hardly.

Obamacare mandates taxpayers pay for BRCA gene testing: yet another government handout to wealthy corporations

But here's what's even more crooked about all this: You know how Obama likes to talk "free market" but actually engages in so-called "crony capitalism" by handing out money to all his corporate buddies, Wall Street insiders and deep-pocketed campaign donors? Part of Obamacare -- the "Affordable Care Act" -- mandates that taxpayers pay for BRCA1 genetic testing!

Myriad Genetics, in other words, stands to receive a full-scale windfall of profits mandated by government and pushed into mainstream consciousness through a campaign of "medical terror" fronted by Angelina Jolie and the New York Times. Are you starting to see how this all fits together yet?

[katiedot note: 'medical terror'??? All she did was share her fears, which happen to be the fears of many women, but gosh look, he used the word 'terror'. That's almost like 'terrorism' isn't it? That good old bugbear that has to get a knee jerk reaction from every patriotic American]

This is all one big coordinated corporate sellout of women, and it's all being hidden by playing the "women's power" card and using "choice" language to more easily manipulate women. Angelina Jolie, remember, is a key spokesperson for the United Nations, an organization already caught engaged in child sex slavery and drug running. Although Jolie obviously isn't engage in that sort of behavior, her job is to covertly influence American women into supporting a carefully-planned, plotted and executed corporate profit campaign that turns women's bodies into profits.

Here's why the Supreme Court decision puts trillions of dollars at stake...

Details on the upcoming Supreme Court decision

The ACLU and the Public Patent Foundation filed a lawsuit in 2009, challenging the corporate ownership of human genes. Anyone who believes in women's rights, human rights, civil rights or even the right to eat non-GMO foods should immediately agree that corporations should NOT be able to patent human genes and then use those patents to rake in billions of dollars in profits while stifling scientific research into those genes.

A question to all women reading this: Do you believe a corporation in Utah owns your body? If not, you should be opposed to corporate ownership of human genes. It also means you should oppose Angelina Jolie's P.R. campaign because although she's running a brilliant public relations campaign, behind the scenes her actions are feeding potentially trillions of dollars of profits directly into the for-profit human gene patenting industry that denies human beings ownership over their own genetic code.

The ACLU explains the basics of its lawsuit against Myriad Genetics as follows:

On May 12, 2009, the ACLU and the Public Patent Foundation (PUBPAT) filed a lawsuit charging that patents on two human genes associated with breast and ovarian cancer, BRCA1 and BRCA2, are unconstitutional and invalid. On November 30, 2012, the Supreme Court agreed to hear argument on the patentability of human genes. The ACLU argued the case before the U.S. Supreme Court on April 15, 2013. We expect a decision this summer.

On behalf of researchers, genetic counselors, women patients, cancer survivors, breast cancer and women's health groups, and scientific associations representing 150,000 geneticists, pathologists, and laboratory professionals, we have argued that human genes cannot be patented because they are classic products of nature. The suit charges that the gene patents violate the First Amendment and stifle diagnostic testing and research that could lead to cures and that they limit women's options regarding their medical care.

Got that? If the Supreme Court rules against Myriad Genetics, it will cause a multi-billion-dollar breast cancer genetic testing industry to collapse virtually overnight. This means a huge loss for not just Myriad, but also many other human gene corporations that wish to exploit the human body -- including the bodies of women -- for monopolistic profits. (All patents are government-granted monopolies.) Ultimately, trillions of dollars in corporate gene patents are at stake here.

Patenting human genes is huge business

Today, about 20 percent of your genes are already patented by corporations and universities. As the ACLU explains, "A gene patent holder has the right to prevent anyone from studying, testing or even looking at a gene. As a result, scientific research and genetic testing has been delayed, limited or even shut down due to concerns about gene patents."

This means that when corporations own patents on human genes, it stifles scientific research while granting that corporation a monopoly over the "intellectual property" encoded in your own DNA! (How criminal is that? You decide...)

What this means is that if the Supreme Court rules against Myriad, it would set a precedent that would dismantle the entire human gene patenting industry, affecting trillions of dollars in future profits.

This, I believe, is the real reason behind Angelina Jolie's announcement. It seems designed to invoke women's emotional reactions and create a groundswell of support for corporate-owned genes, thereby handing these corporations a Supreme Court precedent that will ensure trillions in future profits. It's a for-profit PR stunt that tries to trick women into supporting a corporate system of patents and monopolies that claims, right now, to own portions of the bodies of every woman living today.

While most media outlets have no clue about the patent issues at stake here, the Detroit Free Press took notice, saying:

"The Hollywood star's decision to get tested for a breast cancer gene mutation, undergo a double mastectomy and then write about it calls attention to a case now pending before the court. The justices have just weeks to decide if Myriad Genetics' patent on the two genes that can identify an increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer is legal. Critics complain that the company's monopoly leaves them as the sole source of the $4,000 tests needed to determine each woman's risk."

Lying with statistics: Jolie's 87% risk exaggeration

There's more to this story than just the patents on BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Angelina Jolie is also using blatantly misleading statistics to terrify women into thinking their breasts might kill them.

In the NYT op-ed piece, Jolie claims her doctor told her she has an "87% risk" of developing breast cancer. But what she didn't tell you is that this number doesn't apply to the entire population: it's actually old data derived almost exclusively from families that were previously documented to have very high risks of breast cancer to begin with.

[katiedot note: as far as I can remember, she only said that she had an 87% risk of getting breast cancer. I don't think she made any claims whatsoever on what other women's chances are]

A study published on the National Human Genome Research Institute website and conducted by scientists from the National Institutes of Health reveals that breast cancer risks associated with BRCA1 genes are significantly lower than what's being hyped up by Jolie and the mainstream media.

In fact, in a large room of 600 women, only ONE will likely have a BRCA mutation in her genetic code. The actual incidence is 0.125 to 0.25 out of 100 women, or 1 in 400 to 1 in 800. I used 600 as the average of 400 and 800.

And out of that 1 in 600 women who has the mutation, her risk of breast cancer is only 56 percent, not 78 percent as claimed by Jolie. But 13 percent of women without the BRCA mutation get breast cancer anyway, according to this scientific research, so the increased risk is just 43 out of 100 women.

So what we're really talking about here is 1 in 600 women having a BRCA gene mutation, then less than half of those getting cancer because of it. In other words, only about 1 in 1200 women will be affected by this.

Yet thanks to people like Jolie and the fear-mongering mainstream media, women all across the nation have been terrified into believing their breasts might kill them and the best way to handle the problem is to cut them off!

This, my friends, is the essence of doomsday fear mongering. This issue affects less than one-tenth of one percent of women but is being riled up into a nationwide fear campaign that just happens to feed profits into the for-profit cancer diagnosis and treatment industry, not to mention the monopolistic human gene patenting cartels.

That's the real story of what's happening here. Don't expect to read this in the New York Times.

Corporate media refuses to mention real prevention and treatment options

[Katiedot note: really? I seem to remember reading lots about breast cancer treatment options over the years.]

As part of the breast cancer fear mongering and treatment scam now being run across the mainstream media, nearly all media sources are prohibiting any mention of holistic or natural options for treatment or prevention.

[katiedot note: aha! now we get to it: women who've had medical treatment or mastectomies no longer qualify as patients (or money sources) to holistic practitioners]

Sure, the media talks about "options," but all those options just happen to lead back to the for-profit cancer industry. [katiedot note: as opposed to the for-profit holistic practitioners - I've not come across anyone genuinely offering free cancer treatments, whether medical or alternative]

As an example, read this story by ABC News, part of the lying mainstream media that misinforms women and pushes a corporate agenda:

If you do test positive for BRCA, you have options, and you don't necessarily have to go the Jolie route. Some women choose not to have surgery. Instead, they increase cancer surveillance with imaging tests. These include regular mammograms to test for breast cancer, and regular pelvic sonograms and blood-tests to watch for ovarian cancer.

Nowhere in this article does ABC News mention ways to suppress the BRCA1 gene by, for example, eating raw cruciferous vegetables containing Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C), a potent anti-cancer nutrient that halts breast cancer in its tracks.
[katiedot note: where's the scientific evidence for this?] Nowhere does ABC News mention vitamin D which prevents nearly 4 out of 5 cancers of all types, including breast cancer [katiedot note: ditto].

Nope, the "options" being pushed by mainstream media are nothing more than mammograms, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy -- all owned and run by the for-profit cancer industry that feeds on women and exploits their bodies for profit.

Nor is their any discussion of the total scam of the "pink ribbons" cancer cure industry which is primarily focused on giving women cancer through "free mammograms." As any scientist or physicist already knows, mammograms cause cancer because they emit ionizing radiation directly into the breast and heart tissues. Get enough mammograms done and sooner or later they will detect breast cancer because they caused it! To date, 1.3 million women have been harmed by mammography.[katiedot note: this is so much bullshit: 'science' being willfully misunderstood. By the same token, airplanes also give you cancer because of the higher radiation you experience at altitude.]

Thanks, Angelina, for keeping the wool pulled over the eyes of women everywhere while selling out to for-profit, monopolistic, corporate interests that incessantly seek to exploit women for profit. [Katiedot note: yeah, much better to let the untrained natural healer exploit women for profit, right?]

I was adding my comments as I was reading the article for the first time, so those were my first impressions. As you can see, I started off wondering whether the author maybe had his own agenda and ended up believing that he indeed did.

This makes me so angry. He makes very valid points about patenting of human DNA and the runaway lunacy that is 'big pharma' and then ruins it all by his insistence that cancer can be cured by broccoli and vitamin D. If only.

I'm a big believer in alternative healing therapies but there's also a time for science-based medicine: nobody ever collapses with a heart attack screaming 'get me to an aromatherapist'.

Ironically, he accuses Angelina Jolie of doing two things that he's doing too: firstly of conducting a well orchestrated PR campaign and secondly of scamming unsuspecting women by making (in his opinion) shoddy medical claims for cancer treatment. His opinion piece is also fuelled by a PR campaign (it certainly didn't make it to my facebook page three times by accident) and his claims that cancer can be cured by broccoli and vitamin D is horrifying. That's even more irresponsible than telling women to cut off their breasts to avoid breast cancer.

Eating vitamins, fruits and vegetables certainly reduces your risk of getting cancer (alongside almost all illnesses - this is, after all, what your body needs to survive) but they don't 'cure' cancer.

There's a brilliant book written by a practicing doctor in the UK, Ben Goldacre, called 'Bad Pharma'. It's an eye-opening read of how the pharmaceutical industry is bilking billions from us, essentially by faking their drug efficiency results. Anyone in the UK should read this because it's your tax money that's paying for needless, overpriced medication.

Angelina Jolie's Medical Decision Empty Re: Angelina Jolie's Medical Decision

Post by Way2Old4Dis Sun 19 May 2013, 16:11

As someone heading into her second year of breast cancer treatment, and the mother of a 30something-year-old daughter, I've done a lot of reading on this. The propaganda is infuriating. Whether someone agrees or disagrees with the US Patent Office's practice of granting patents on the genes (and their mutations) themselves (I disagree; the patent should be for the test design and possibly the prediction formula), it's a huge effing leap to accuse Jolie of being a corporate shill. Can anyone prove she was paid by Myriad? Does anybody believe an activist of her standing would take that money?

In modern medicine, when a breast cancer tumor is removed, it is genetically tested for factors that contribute to recurrence. The tumor itself (or part of it) is sent to the only lab in the country (in LA, I believe) that does the test. It's called Oncotype. The company owns the test, of course. It also owns the mathematical formula it uses to come up with the recurrence probability. They also take ownership of the physical specimen that they receive. According to my doctors and the company rep, they use the specimens for research purposes and in compiling a database. To me, all of that is legitimate. If it helps cure or prevent the disease, have at it.

But that is vastly different from the company claiming ownership of the genetic sequence or combination of factors that comprise the mathematical formula. The company didn't develop those. It received them in a specimen that came from someone's body.

The issue is that the US Patent Office is violating its own directives by granting these patents on the genes themselves, rather than the test itself. That's where the fight is. (The company, in my mind, has an unfair and unethical patent, but it is a legally-held patent nonetheless. For now. )

What I object to here is the shrill cries of foul play and accusations of selling out. All that does is cloud the issue. Jolie had the test, she made a decision. Whether the timing is fishy or not, she made the same decision many other women have made. The fight is not with her, it is with the US Patent Office, and with Myriad.

Obviously, she's more famous than most women who have to make this decision, and has an international platform. Does that mean the company paid her? Unless someone shows me proof that Jolie and Pitt willingly sold out millions of women to make a buck (money they don't need, and after Jolie's mother fought the breast cancer battle), I'm calling bullshit on the conspiracy theories.

I think it's highly irresponsible to make these kinds of accusations without proof. But then, I'm old enough to remember when journalism and reporting had standards.

Angelina Jolie's Medical Decision Empty Re: Angelina Jolie's Medical Decision

Post by Way2Old4Dis Sun 19 May 2013, 17:52

Thanks, guys. I'm good. In fact, this past week was my complete annual once-over, and except for some lingering issues from the radiation (which I steadfastly ignore -- I'm walking around in a tank top right now), I couldn't ask for a better report.

I just don't appreciate the politics and histrionics being attached to this. If someone has something legitimately important to offer, then, yeah, bring it on. Knowledge is power. But I don't count celebrity baiting or unproven conspiracies as "knowledge." That's just noise, and nobody needs that. There's too much at stake.

I'm off my soapbox now.

Angelina Jolie's Medical Decision Empty Re: Angelina Jolie's Medical Decision

Post by Mazy Sun 19 May 2013, 18:12

I have too say I am about as angry as many of you are. I lost an older sister to breast cancer after her second breast was removed. She had a condition that produced tumors. She took experimental drug that bought her 13yrs but it traveled to her lungs. My next sister died of lung cancer, both of them were not that old. They have been watching my right breast for several years and now have added the left to the watch. Every six months I get mamagrams and sonograms of both. There are things there but they are believed to be nonmalignant at this time. I too have a daughter she has my families history and an aunt on her fathers side that had died from breast cancer and another from ovarian cancer. I worry more about her.

Joanna
Both of you and yours I wish all of God's Blessing,
Way2Old...."As someone heading into her second year of breast cancer treatment, and the mother of a 30something-year-old daughter, I've done a lot of reading on this."

I just want to wish you well in your treatment and obviously hope you have a 100% positive result.

Katiedot, thank you for this article. I don't believe it but I am going to check it out. Funny he never said what Angelina had to gain by her trickery. I guess that she also planed her poor Mother dying from Ovarian cancer.

As soon as I get more info I will tweet daily about this man, the same as I do about alBashir because they are in the same catagory to me.

Mazy...I am sorry to hear of your loss of both sisters. That must be a hard experience to recover from.
When we have a cancer experience it does make us angry at negative comments as no one knows the effect it has on the
person involved.

At the end of the day Angie has done what SHE feels is

Thanks a lot Joanna. It seems that not too many of us get away with out being touch by it one way or another.
I give her credit tough decission.

Way2Old4Dis so glad you got a good report.

I am blessed in many ways and I don't forget that. God has given me a strong gift of faith. I know he will not give me more than I can handle, as Mother Tersa always said.

As I tell my daughter these are all tests. I said it so much when they were moving me to S. Carolina from PA., she kept saying this is a test too. Everything that went wrong we just kept laughing, her, my son-in-law and myself. What else can you do when you cannot change something. Out of any bad situation something good always comes if you watch for it.

All the very best wishes to both Mazy and Way2old4dis for sharing your stories and insight - I must admit that the very word cancer scares and saddens me, my own Mother died at age 45 from cancer and since I am fast approaching that age I at times feel very fearful, not logical I know but its there just the same. Thank you all for providing information, knowledge and prevention go hand in hand. Mazy, sorry about your loss, not empty words sending you peace/happiness - Way2old4dis, hoping continued recovery for you in every way xx

Stress is bad with any disease it makes things worse. They are learning new ways everyday, more people are not only living with cancer they recovering from cancer everyday. The more they learn the better the odds. Cancer is only a word, it runs in my family. My mother had skin cancer and colon cancer and according to the doctors she was cured of both and she was. Never had another problem after surgery. She past away in her sleep in her late 90's. I was her baby. hA hA

You have to live everyday that God gives you like it is your last; but plan for a long future, because we never know. I could live to be 99 like I plan(greedy aren't I) or I could cross the street tommorow and get hit by a truck. So don't worry about cancer Theminis, but do what you have to and forget till the next check up. Life is wonderful.

Angelina Jolie's Medical Decision Empty Re: Angelina Jolie's Medical Decision

Post by Joanna Mon 27 May 2013, 10:59

Maybe this news will quieten Angelina's critics ?

Angelina Jolie's aunt had the same defective BRCA1 gene as the actress
(AP/Uwe Lein)

Actress Angelina Jolie's aunt has died from breast cancer, less than two weeks after the star had a double mastectomy to avoid the disease.

Debbie Martin, 61, died in a San Diego, California-area hospital, her husband Ron said.

Mrs Martin was the younger sister of Jolie's mother Marcheline Bertrand, whose own death from cancer in 2007 inspired the surgery that Jolie described in a May 14 New York Times article.

According to her husband, Mrs Martin had the same defective BRCA1 gene as Jolie, but did not know it until after her 2004 cancer diagnosis.

He said had his wife known in advance of her genetic risk, "she would have done exactly what Angelina did".

Mrs Martin's death was first reported by E! News.

Angelina Jolie's Medical Decision Angeli11

Angelina Jolie has made her first public appearance since telling the world about her double mastectomy.

The 37-year-old actress was greeted with rapturous applause and cheers as she arrived on the red carpet with fiancé Brad Pitt at the London premiere of his film World War Z today.

Jolie, who appeared in a floor-length black gown, thanked Pitt for his support and said she was pleased she had inspired discussion about breast cancer.

Last month the actress revealed she underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery earlier this year after she was identified as carrying the BRCA1 cancer gene.

Since the operation, Jolie has spent time recovering at her home in Los Angeles.

Pitt, 49, had publicly voiced his support for Jolie, describing her as "absolutely heroic" for going ahead with the operation.

Speaking to Sky News from the red carpet today, Jolie said she felt "wonderful" and was "very, very grateful for all the support.

"It has meant a lot to me.

"He (Brad Pitt) has been extraordinary, just extraordinary. He's just such a wonderful man and a wonderful father, and I am very, very lucky.

"I have been very happy just to see the discussion about women's health expanded and that means the world to me.

"After losing my mum to these issues, I'm very grateful for it, and I've been very moved by the kind support from people."

Jolie's mother died from ovarian cancer at 56 and her 61-year-old aunt died of breast cancer last month.

Jolie chose to miss her aunt's funeral in San Diego as it clashed with Pitt's premiere.

I guess she's encouraging thousands of women to be proactive about monitoring their breasts for cancerous tumors. Particularly with family history.

She's a beautiful person, conscientious & a wonderful role model.

Perhaps a lumpectomy could remove the tumor in time too, if such extreme measures as voluntary mastectomy can be avoided.
Regular two year scans should be encouraged.

I think breast cancer has a 70% survival rate, in statistics I read a couple of years ago.

Ok I'm not trying to be rude and I do know she has gone thru quite a bit but...

I've seen Angelina in person in the past and she was quite flat chested. Is it me, or the dress? She seems to have had reconstructive surgery and has um "enhanced" her bust area?

Again, not being rude she just looks bigger on top now.

She has definitely had reconstructive surgery (it said so in all the initial articles announcing the surgery).

I'm not sure why she elected to have boobs so big as she seems to have because it's very out of keeping with her skinny frame, but I guess it's her decision.

Post by NotAvailable Mon 03 Jun 2013, 08:16

I think she had the latest reconstruction surgery, building breast from skin tissue. I am not sure how they get the tissue, perhaps lab grown for that purpose from samples... I have no idea. But have heard of this measure. They can grow cells and tissue right in the lab now, which helps ppl with face burns and other types of damaged skin.

I hope her ovarian surgery goes well. She's well known and her success at it can greatly encourage others. And all on here who need an encouraging message. Good luck and may you live as long as you wish to. Give Flowers2

We really don't know if there is swelling and or padding for protection going on. It is a massive surgery and it hasn't been that long. and there good be a medical reason also.

My sister wanted reconstruction when she just had the one removed, but her insurance wouldn't cover it. Whatever it takes to make the person feel whole again. God Bless her big time.

Maybe she wasn't that close with her aunt?

Also we really don't know - unless someone has more info - was the funeral at the same time? She might have been there but we were just not made aware?

I really don't know just conjecturing here.

She may also have been sensitive to the fact that everywhere she and Brad go, there is a media circus which follows and it would be disrespectful to her late aunt and her family. Maybe the rest of the family preferred to have their privacy and not a Brangelina media circus and asked them to refrain from attending.

I read that she was so grateful to Brad for his support over her surgery period that she just wanted to be with him on his big occasion.
IMO one can say goodbye to a relative without attending their funeral, and maybe she would have caused too much attention
there anyway.
