WJW, BJT GARNER 12 MDDC AWARDS

This photo of George Clooney at the Sudanese Embassy, taken by managing editor Meredith Jacobs, won first place for General News Photo from the MDDC Press Association.

While it may not be hard to take a good picture of actor George Clooney, it's no small feat to have that photo be awarded first place for General News Photo by the MDDC (Maryland, Delaware, D.C.) Press Association. Taken by WJW managing editor Meredith Jacobs when Clooney was arrested at the Sudanese Embassy, the photo prompted judges to comment: "Nice work on getting in this close to capture his cool, confident reaction." (We just thought he was handsome.)

Also taking home first place awards was arts correspondent Lisa Traiger for her review of Theater J's The Whipping Man, and executive editor Phil Jacobs and senior writer David Holzel for "When a predator wants to pray." Said the judges, it is an "in-depth look at an issue facing people of faith everywhere." The story's headline, written by Meredith Jacobs was awarded first place and "Best in Show."

Holzel took home second place for his profile of attorney Abbe Lowell, "Man of words."
Yasher koach to our sister publication Baltimore Jewish Times. Maayan Jaffe, BJT's managing editor, was awarded first place nods for both her headline "A rabbi walks into a bar: Rabbi Jessica Gross thrives in pubs, not pulpits" and her education report, "Day school crisis: parents, administrators say rising costs render system unsustainable."

Reporters Ron Snyder and David Snyder and the BJT staff won first place and Best in Show for their election package "Election 2012."

seriously? That image won a prize? Of course he looks confident; he probably has the best legal team there is.
