Nominations for the 85th Academy Awards were announced this morning by the show’s host, Seth MacFarlane, and actress Emma Stone on Thursday, January 10. This was the first time since 1972 that an Oscar show host has participated in the nominations announcement. The nominations were unveiled at a news conference at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, where hundreds of media representatives from around the world will be gathered. Since the first nominations announcement in 1964, the Academy president has been joined by one or more co-announcers at the event. This year the Academy will break with tradition when MacFarlane, the Ted star and filmmaker who was named Oscar show host in October, joins Stone on Oscar nominations morning. (Charlton Heston in 1972 was the only other show host to participate in the nominations announcement.) Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 24th at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. It is historically difficult to get a Best Picture win without a Best Director nomination or win, especially with the added shutout on the major (ie, not supporting) acting categories.

I'm also going to venture an opinion here. It will be increasingly difficult for "boys' club" movies to win the big ones. Movies with strong women' s roles will rule the days to come. "Lincoln" has Sally Field. "Les Mis" has Hathaway. "Zero Dark Thirty" has, um... yeah, her. They have a better chance than "Argo," I think.

2013 Oscar -- Argo nominated Best Picture Empty Re: 2013 Oscar -- Argo nominated Best Picture

Post by silly girl Thu 10 Jan 2013, 19:51

How many years have there been more nominations for Best Picture than the other categories. I think Argo might (and it is a big might) have a chance because voters will think 1. everyone else is voting for Lincoln etc. 2. The voters will feel sorry for BA and give it to his movie and/or 3. They want to see GC win and get on stage.

I agree the chances are slim. I might run it by the one person I know who votes.

Oh and I never heard of the one film at all: Beasts of the Southern Wild which goes to show sometimes it is silly to "campaign" for awards.

I haven't seen the film but those who have RAVE about it and also rave about the young girl who was nominated today.

I had rented it from a Redbox here but didn't get a chance to watch it - so I took it back. Guess I'll have to go rent it again to see what all the good reviews are all about!

Here's the plot synopsis from imdb.com

Hushpuppy, an intrepid six-year-old girl, lives with her father, Wink, in the Bathtub, a southern Delta community at the edge of the world. Wink's tough love prepares her for the unraveling of the universe; for a time when he's no longer there to protect her. When Wink contracts a mysterious illness, nature flies out of whack, temperatures rise, and the ice caps melt, unleashing an army of prehistoric creatures called aurochs. With the waters rising, the aurochs coming, and Wink's health fading, Hushpuppy goes in search of her lost mother.

As to Argo winning, well anything is possible and I really did enjoy the film, but there are some very strong contenders for the award. Les Miz and Lincoln being the two that I think would have the better chance of winning.

One thing is for sure, given how the nomination announcements went this morning with Seth MacFarlane, the Oscar telecast is probably going to be the most entertaining in years.

All of the local news station reporters were saying how funny he and Emma Stone were this morning. The kind of funny that made you laugh and not cringe.

This is the first year that there can be up to 10 Best Picture nominations.

I think you may be giving the voters too much credit. I think the thinking will go more like, "Affleck, you're not back on top until we say so, and we' 're not saying so -- not yet." and "George, you have enough of the good life. I'm not voting to give you another Oscar to go with it."

"Beasts..." is a charming film with a cast of unknowns (the lead actor owns a bakery), about a little girl whose father is trying to prepare her for life as he is facing his own death. The girl was 5 years old when the movie was made (I think she's 8 or 9 now), and she was nominated as Best Actress. Impressive performance, but I don't think she will or should win.

2013 Oscar -- Argo nominated Best Picture Empty Re: 2013 Oscar -- Argo nominated Best Picture

Post by Katiedot Fri 18 Jan 2013, 18:19

It's looking really good for the Oscars:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Experts: 'Argo' threatens 'Lincoln's' lead in Oscar Best Picture race

While "Lincoln" continues to lead the Oscar race for Best Picture, "Argo" is closing in fast, according to the latest predictions of 24 experts polled by Gold Derby.

"Lincoln" is the choice of 13 top Oscarologists, giving it 7-to-2 odds, compared to 10 for "Argo" (4-to-1 odds) and 1 for "Silver Linings Playbook" (13 to 2).

When Academy Awards nominations were unveiled, "Lincoln" seemed to be way out front since it led with the most nominations – 12 – that's just two shy of the record held by "Titanic" and "All About Eve." The pic with the most bids prevails more than two-thirds of the time, historically speaking.

But "Lincoln" also led with the most Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards nominations recently, then ended up losing to "Argo," thus mixing up prognosticators' tea leaves. While Critics Choice tends to be a key Oscar indicator, agreeing on Best Picture 10 times in the past 13 years, the Golden Globe does not, concurring only twice in the past 8 years.

The 10 pundits who now pick "Argo" to bag the top Oscar too are: Thelma Adams (Yahoo), Edward Douglas (Comingsoon), Pete Hammond (Deadline Hollywood), Tariq Khan (Fox News), Guy Lodge (Hitfix), Steve Pond (TheWrap), Christopher Rosen (Huffington Post), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby), Chuck Walton (Fandango) and me.

Backing "Lincoln": Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes), Scott Feinberg (Hollywood Reporter), Thom Geier (Entertainment Weekly), Richard Horgan (Mediabistro), Dave Karger (Fandango), Michael Musto (Village Voice), Kevin Polowy (Next Movie), Keith Simanton (IMDB), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Alex Suskind (Moviefone), Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood, Indiewire), Glenn Whipp (L.A. Times) and Susan Wloszczyna (USA Today).

Betting on "Silver Linings Playbook": Jeff Wells (Hollywood Elsewhere).

Lincoln is not so much about the assassination as it is about Lincoln's attempts at ending slavery and the war and uniting the country again. So sort of a triumph too.

I have seen four of the movies nominated, and just for fun here is my junior film critique take on how Argo stands in the Oscar race. Wish I could vote.

Both Lincoln and Les Miserable are epic grandiose motion pictures. Grand sets, cinematography, sound and, performances in both. Daniel Day Lewis is Lincoln, as I would think Lincoln would be. DDL is always superb, one of the best actors of my lifetime. He makes this film, but great performances by Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones and well written about early American governing.

All actors in Les Mis have larger than life performances, except Russell Crowe - who isn't as bad as some of the critics say, but just more subdued which isn't what you would expect from that role. Also for the Brits on the forum, Anne H. is award worthy, but for me they should have nominated Samantha Barks as Epione. A wonderful star in the making- I thought she was better. You have to love musicals where the whole thing is bursting in song- no un-sung dialogue in this movie. So if that annoys you the movie could be hard to watch.

When you think of old motion picture epic films these two are it.

Now Argo and Silver Linings Playbook are my type of thinking films. Argo manages to straddle the line between a great thriller and a great character study and story. Harder to be a thriller when you know how it ends, but manages it nicely. Not surprised this didn't get a lot of acting nominations as it really is an ensemble acting piece- they stand as one big group to me. Alan Arkin and John Goodman are somewhat of the comic relief and I really love them here. Exciting to watch.

Silver Linings Playbook has four of the best individual performances I have seen in a movie in a long time. The story is touching, funny, sad, angry, and scary. I am amazed that this movie didn't turn out so much more over the top or schmaltzy. Kind of wondered watching it and thinking about David O. Russell and George Clooney's fight years ago if David O. Russell has some mental OCD or anger issues of his own, and that is why he was able to write the story so well. (understand his son has ocd, but looked more personal to me) This is one of those movies that sticks with you for a while - just movie making at its best.

Now if I could give the award out, no matter how much I love George, I would give it to Silver Linings Playbook and Bradley Cooper over DDL in this role. Won't happen but really all of these four are deserving of an Oscar to me. So I would be happy for any of them. I know it is a cliche but really to be nominated with any of these films is a great honor in itself. Great year go watch them.

Way2Old4this- 2009 was when they increased the amount of Best Picture nominees to 10. Which was what is was in the 30's and 40's anyway.

Thanks, M. I realized I was incorrect a couple of days ago but kept forgetting to fix my mistake.

Good take on the movies. I concur. I've read all the nominated screenplays, and will catch the three Best Picture nominees I haven't seen before Oscar night rolls around.

I don't think any actor expects to win in any year Daniel Day-Lewis is nominated -- besides DDL, that is.

2013 Oscar -- Argo nominated Best Picture Empty Re: 2013 Oscar -- Argo nominated Best Picture

Post by Lighterside Tue 22 Jan 2013, 17:13

At the Oscars, ‘Argo’ Will Win Best Picture
Jan 22, 2013 4:45 AM EST

There’s something in the air in Hollywood. Ben Affleck’s hostage thriller has now emerged as the underdog for Best Picture at the Oscars, reports Ramin Setoodeh. And this town loves a comeback story.

This year’s Academy Awards race for Best Picture is a lot like last year’s race for the Republican presidential nomination. Only the stakes are so much higher!

The early frontrunner, Argo may have peaked too early, kind of like Mitt Romney did. Next came Silver Linings Playbook (the cuckoo candidate, à la Michele Bachmann), Life of Pi (if only Rick Perry could roar like that tiger), Lincoln (as reserved as Ron Paul), and Zero Dark Thirty (as controversial as Rick Santorum). I hate to compare Les Misérables to Newt Gingrich, but they both polarized voters. And the much-anticipated The Great Gatsby pushed back its candidacy (like Chris Christie). As BuzzFeed’s Richard Rushfield observed last November, the Oscar race for Best Picture had never been so wide open.

A few weeks ago, it started to look one of the candidates had become the clear frontrunner. Even if Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln puts audiences to sleep like a C-SPAN marathon, Hollywood found parallels between the film and the second inauguration of a certain 44th president. Lincoln landed seven Golden Globe nominations and 12 Oscar nominations, more than any other film. The movie with the most nominations usually wins Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

But if there’s one thing the Academy loves, it’s a comeback story—and a funny thing happened on the red carpet. The early precursor awards that were supposed to go to Lincoln went to Argo instead. Ben Affleck’s film about how the CIA (and Hollywood!) heroically saved six diplomats during the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis swept top honors at the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards in January. Over at Gold Derby, which tracks various Oscar races, 13 pundits still predict Lincoln will win Best Picture compared with 10 for Argo. If anything, though, with a month until the Feb. 24 Oscars ceremony, the momentum seems to be moving in Argo's direction, a movie that paints the showbiz industry as an international superpower.

“The indication that Lincoln may not be as strong as we thought is more than Argo's win at the Golden Globes,” says Tom O’Neil, who runs Gold Derby and forecasts an Argo victory. “It was also the Critics’ Choice Awards.” That voting group has predicted the Oscar Best Picture winner for 10 of the last 13 years.

Argo’s detractors use another statistic against it. In one of the most puzzling twists of the season, Ben Affleck was snubbed for a Best Director Oscar nod. The last time a movie won Best Picture without a Best Director nomination was 1989’s Driving Miss Daisy. But if that omission plays into the race at all, it will only boost Argo’s chances.

There’s so much talk about Affleck’s snub—Fox News hilariously asked “Did Affleck’s abdominals cost him an Oscar?”—that Hollywood might vote for Argo out of guilt. It’s not the entire Academy that overlooked Affleck. The Best Director nominees are selected by a mostly male body of 371 directors with art-house tastes that would prefer Amour to Argo. The rest of the 6,014 Academy voters love Affleck, who has been campaigning so hard for his movie, he might as well be running for the United States Senate. It helps that his running mate, a producer on the film, is George Clooney.

The momentum seems to be moving to Argo, a movie that paints the showbiz industry as an international superpower.

There’s another obscure rule to consider. Since 2010, when the Academy added more than five Best Picture nominees, it changed the way ballots in that category are tabulated. Voters don’t select a single film but rank them in order of preference. If a movie doesn’t receive a majority of votes, which is impossible in a year like this, the least popular movie’s votes are discarded and redistributed. The process is repeated until a movie has 51 percent of the vote. That means the winner for Best Picture doesn’t really need to be the best. It just needs to be most consistently liked—which benefits Argo more than Lincoln. (As an aside, both critics and audiences prefer Argo too. On Rotten Tomatoes, Argo has a 96 percent “Fresh” rating; Lincoln is at 91 percent. IMDb users give Argo an 8.1 rating to Lincoln’s 8.0.)

Academy Awards voting runs from Feb. 8 to Feb. 19, so there’s still time for the race to change again. And don’t count out another sleeper contender, Silver Linings Playbook. The first movie in 31 years to land Oscar nominations for all four of its actors, it has the campaigning muscle of Harvey Weinstein behind it. “Never discount that,” says an awards insider who sees Best Picture as a three-way competition. The remaining key events to look for are winners from the Producers Guild Awards (Jan. 26), Screen Actors Guild Awards (Jan. 27), and Directors Guild Awards (Feb. 2). If Ben Affleck picks up one or more of those, Mr. Lincoln is in
trouble.Daily Beast

hum... I'd hardly call Ben George's pupil. He's been on the academy to-watch-list since his very first attempt, Gone Baby Gone, and he did quite ok with The Town (though I didn't enjoy this one as much as Gone baby gone or Argo). Contrary to George, who tried many different types of movies, I'd say Ben stuck with a specific genre/style, with much success - and they made a great team for Argo but since Gone Baby Gone a lot of people expected Affleck to get there.
and yes a directing awards is definitively top prize, but you hardly can say that if you don't have it you're a failure, can you ? By this standard Scorcese and Spielberg (who missed so many times) would have to rethink their vocation, lol...

anyway, comes oscar day I'll be happy to see DDL one more time, and I'll hold my breath for BP, since I don't think Lincoln is totally out of the equation yet...

Perhaps OP is implying that Best Director or Best Actor Academy Awards are more prestigious than being one of many producers in Best Film category. A producer doesn't usually have as much input in the creative aspect of the film, as he/she finances, oversees & administers primarily.
Besides, there is no Best Producer Oscar. lol!

In any case, GC already has an Academy Award under his belt. super cool

Saw ARGO today and loved it. Ben A. should definitely get an Oscar for best actor, the movie itself for Best Movie and Alan Arkin for best supporting actor. Arkin is not much in the movie but there is a monologue at the beginning when he is talking to a producer in Hollywood asking him to finance the movie that is Oscar worthy. Everybody in the theatre was clapping. There is a cameo appearance for a couple of seconds by Jack Nicholson (I think it was him), who just steps in the door, says a couple of words and leaves. That was great!! Oscarrrrr!!

I have a question for all you film aficionados. At all the award shows, when Argo has won best picture, Grant and George have gotten awards. They're the producers. Why are the executive producers not getting the awards? I always thought the Executive Producers were the top guys.

Good question, but I have a feeling the executive directors are the money raisers or the big cheeses at companies like Sony, Fox, WarnerBros, Disney etc, or people who have enough money in their own right or who know where to find the money. And I think they're also the people who 'greenlight' a picture

Here is what it says on the official website:

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Rule Sixteen: Special Rules for the Best Picture of the Year Award

A Reminder List of all eligible motion pictures shall be made available along with a nominations ballot to all active and life members of the Academy who shall vote in the order of their preference for not more than five pictures.

The pictures receiving the highest number of votes shall become the nominations for final voting for the Best Picture award. There may not be more than ten nor fewer than five nominations; however, no picture shall be nominated that receives less than five percent of the total votes cast.

The individual(s) who shall be credited for Academy Award purposes must have screen credit of "producer" or "produced by." Persons with screen credits of executive producer, co-producer, associate producer, line producer, produced in association with or any other credit shall not receive nominations or Academy statuettes. The nominees will be those three or fewer producers who have performed the major portion of the producing functions. In determining the number of producers eligible for nomination, a bona fide team of not more than two people shall be considered to be a single "producer" if the two individuals have had an established producing partnership for at least the previous five years and as a producing team have produced a minimum of five theatrically-released feature motion pictures during that time. The Producers Branch Executive Committee will designate the qualifying producer nominees for each of the nominated pictures. The committee has the right, in what it determines to be a rare and extraordinary circumstance, to name any additional qualified producer as a nominee.

Final voting for the Best Picture award shall be restricted to active and life Academy members.

I'm not sure if this is the place to post this comment or if there's a better thread.....just picked this one.

Anyway, saw Argo last night on DVD and really, really loved it! I think Ben Affleck was brilliant and Allan Arkin and John Goodman were thoroughly enjoyable. Well rounded cast in general and even knowing the outcome ahead of time, was still on the edge of my seat at times. Convincingly tense, IMO. Portrayed the desperation of their situation well. Bravo, Ben Affleck, bravo!!!!! Looking forward to your next project!

Loved this movie as well. Thought the Oscar talk was over done until I saw it. It's one of the few movies in a long time that I enjoyed from beginning to end.

Just watched Zero Dark 30. That one was more difficult to watch. I had heard the torture parts were only in the beginning but they seemed to infect the entire movie. I watched it with someone who had a hard time following the fast moving dialogue so had to keep stopping it and telling her what they said!
