Not Rat or Brat Pack, They are the Thunk Hunks

Post by OofOof on Sun Mar 24 2013, 01:03

Good article about today's megastars and how different they are from the Rat Pack of yesterday:

It would be hard to imagine Frank Sinatra or Jack Nicholson or even Warren Beatty—easily the most politically active of his generation of actors—following up an Oscar win by making a beeline to the TED talks.

But that is where Ben Affleck could be found, just four days after emotionally accepting his little gold man. Joking that attending the TED conference was like arriving at "the Academy Awards for smart people", he made a plea for the conflict-ravaged Congo. "I've met people mending the fabric of their lives," he said. "Brick by brick, stitch by stitch."

With his best picture win for Argo at the Oscars, moviedom's leading man of the moment is most definitely Affleck. More than just pulling off a rarely achieved career U-turn—it's a long way from Gigli (2003)—at 40 he has also come to embody a new paradigm for masculinity.

These are his current attributes: maker of important films, happily married (to Jennifer Garner), father of three, Eastern Congo philanthropist. Add rumoured Senate candidate.

Apparently the way to be cool now—the way to be James Dean in 2013—has nothing to do with his-and-hers Rolls-Royces.

A-list celebrities have exhibited a serious side for years, of course. Angelina Jolie landed in Darfur more than a decade ago. But Affleck's evolution has made him the face of this cluster of actor-director-producers.

People like Matt Damon, George Clooney, Jolie, Leonardo DiCaprio, Don Cheadle and Brad Pitt are making politically savvy movies (Promised Land, J Edgar), doing serious charity work (World Wildlife Fund, Water.org) and keeping the night-crawling to a minimum.

The guys also appear capable of growing a beard overnight. But that's gravy.

Adjunct members include Mark Wahlberg, who has a white-hot career—Ted 2, the next Transformers—and an extremely staid private life with wife and four kids. You don't see Channing Tatum passed out in the driveway; People magazine's reigning "sexiest man alive" is married, produces his own movies and does quiet work for animal and environmental charities.

The new Hollywood man, intellectually faux or not—the Thunk Hunk—is a significant departure from the old industry version of cool. The Rat Pack's leaders varied, from Bogart to Sinatra, but its signature habits did not: cocktails, carousing, casinos. The angsty, hard-partying Brat Pack (Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez and pals) symbolised Hollywood heat in the '80s. Eventually another mostly male swarm emerged: the Frat Pack, sophomoric comic actors like Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.

"Multiple generations of actors had a romance with the image of a movie star—the women and the drugs...," said Jess Cagle, the managing editor of Entertainment Weekly. "This one seems to have grown out of it."

"And the big thing, of course," Cagle added, "is the influence of Clooney...."

Yes, Clooney, 51, is Chairman of the Board of today's loose group of non-profit leading men, which started to form in 2001 when the core cluster starred in Ocean's Eleven, a remake of a Rat Pack movie. Clooney, who has been nominated for eight Academy Awards and has won two, has led by example, becoming a passionate advocate for Darfur and other causes.

This seriousness is more than just window dressing, but some cynics still have a hard time buying it. Isn't it possible that these actors just figured out what public relations game to play?

"Just like they used to put gauze over the lens, these people put causes over the lens," said James Ulmer, who compiles the report 'The Ulmer Scale', which rates the global bankability of actors. "Who was it again who hiked up Kilimanjaro before the snows melt forever and all our water disappears? I forget. Probably all of them."

It's true that these actors and their handlers saw something changing in show business. TMZ started to hold stars accountable for their behaviour. Simultaneously, a tabloid culture started to eat them alive. Hollywood's star-handling apparatus jumped in, realising their clients needed to retreat to higher ground if they were going to remain stars—mysterious, aspirational—and not reality TV personalities.

The changing nature of films may have also played a role. Today the concept or underlying comic-book property is what matters, and you can be replaced. Mark Harris, writing in GQ, called it the "post-movie-star movie star"—competent, handsome, and untroublesome to the corporation bankrolling your franchise.

Don't count out age, of course. Affleck was in his late 20s when he started dating Lopez, appearing in a music video massaging her famously hefty hind quarters. Botox injections may keep stars from ageing, but they do mature. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger grew up (kind of).

In the end, the most jarring label, at least in Hollywood, may be this one: grown-ups.

Ah I don't know about that "grown-up" label. DeCaprio and Clooney are both still serial daters so that grown up label doesn't quite cover some of their antics!

There is only one area in George's life that is not settled to what most people think it should be. Otherwise he is a very mature and on target man. I could be wrong but I think it was him and his group that were one of the first to get big into the humanitarian efforts. I think that he is a very proficient in his skills and also believe he has a set timetable set for his life. I hope he continues acting along with his other endeavors. Whatever his reasons are for not wanting a completely committed relationship at this time is something that he will keep to himself.

One reason he hasn't had a long term relationship for some time is because he hasn't met me yet, one day. Then you'll see, no babies though.

You're going to have to duke it out with Dior for that one! She's also convinced his issue is that he hasn't met HER!

Maybe George will agree to show up for it - you guys can either box in a ring, wrestle ala Stacy style, or heck he might enjoy you both going at it in a vat of jello! Seems to be a lot of guys' fantasy! HA!

Winner gets it all! George, the houses, the lifestyle, the private jets, the non-stop inccessant paparazzi stalking....

Oops, forgot that part!

Well wait now, do you think if George actually married a gal that his fans would be snarky? Don't you think they'd lay off? Of course, it would depend if she dressed like a gal going to her next strip joint appearance or if she dressed like a classy gal.

For example, I don't think Kelsey Grammar's wife ever got much respect even after he married her cause I believe she WAS a stripper when he met her. (from the comments section at the link below :

Let’s be real here. Camille was a 2 bit stripper when she met this douche. He was an alcoholic, drug addled, famous, rich easy mark. Just like he is now.

So I'm going to surmise it would depend on the type of gal.

Can you get three gals in a kiddie swimming pool full of cherry jello?

What I want to know is which one of you has either been a cocktail waitress, porn actress, stripper or girl wrestler in a past life. That's who I'm betting on!

Ah shit! I forgot I used to be a waitress. NOW I know why I've been attracted to him! Must have been all that cigarette second hand smoke I inhaled in the cave man days when I used to waitress! Ciggies in clubs were actually allowed in those olden days!

Well there you go Lorna! Now if you served cocktails, you wear very little clothing, wear at least 5 inch heels and are extremely flexible, you are a shoe in!

Well at my highschool graduation beach party, I ran topless into the ocean whilst every boy who ever had a crush on me at that point just about died...I nearly did too on the amount of whiskey I drank that day in full sun....oh memories, does that count Ooof, don't think my past is salacious enough for George.

Ok I'm having PC problems with both of them & couldn't type.
I have to limit my sugar so it has to be sugar free jello. I was a waitress & cook but no cocktails, when we had resturant. I won't work where they serve alcohol, it get hairy sometimes. I've never (sorry to say) have never had any of the other occupations listed, not dead yet so I still have time.
Most of my other endeavors were either decorative painting, wallpapering The rest have been with computer work and office manager, boring. So think I qualify?
Oh I am not one for flaunting around looking for paps and money doesn't matter. As long as I have good PCs and the like a decent place to live and George I'm good to go. I'm the wifey type, cook and bake all that stuff.

Proof that I'm too old for George. I need glasses!

When I read that sentence I thought you said, "...was a waitress and cock but no cocktails..."

I was 18, rocking probably the best body Ive ever had, which really has no significance, but thought Id put that out there - way way way too much alcohol involved, a wee bit of heatstroke too no doubt - a dare was made, I couldn't back down - 6 of us ran into the ocean starkers - no regrets
