OSCARS: Is George Clooney Now King Of The Academy Awards? Empty OSCARS: Is George Clooney Now King Of The Academy Awards?

Post by silly girl Thu 21 Feb 2013, 21:57

I think this was mentioned somewhere but I can't find it. From Deadline.com

OSCARS: Is George Clooney Now King Of The Academy Awards?

When George Clooney received 8th Oscar nomination as a producer of Argo (a Best Picture nominee he shared producing credits on with Ben Affleck and Grant Heslov), he marched into the record books of the Academy Awards in a very unique way. It was the sixth different category in which he was nominated, an unprecedented feat for the 24 categories that are currently handed out each year, and a nearly-unprecedented feat in all 85 years of the Oscars – but that’s with an asterisk and we’ll get to that.

Clooney knocked off three of those categories in 2005, the first year he was nominated for anything with Directing and Original Screenplay (with Heslov) nods for Good Night And Good Luck as well as Best Supporting Actor for Syriana (which he won). Then there were those Best Actor nominations he seems to get every other year starting with Michael Clayton (2007), Up In The Air (2009) and The Descendants (2011). That’s four different categories to which he also added a fifth also in 2011 being simultaneously nominated in the Best Adapted Screenplay race for The Ides Of March (with Heslov and Beau Willimon). This feat with five tied him with Warren Beatty, Stanley Kubrick, Ethan Coen, Joel Coen and Kenneth Branagh, however only Clooney’s and Beatty’s noms all came in Oscar’s marquee top eight races (Picture,Writing, Acting, Directing). In fact the only two categories in the top 8 Clooney has yet to crack are Best Actress and Supporting Actress. For the record in addition to their writing, producing , directing and/or acting nods Kubrick won in Special Effects for 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968); Branagh was nominated for a Live Action Short Swan Song (1992); and the Coens have shared Film Editing nominations twice under their pseudonym Roderick Jaynes.

With Best Picture front runner Argo the versatile Clooney has now passed them all in this particular, and particularly impressive, Oscar statistic. Although some could say acting, directing , writing and picture are just four categories I would argue they are very specific disciplines which is why the Academy separates out lead and supporting acting as well as Adapted and Original Screenplays. I would also point out Beatty’s feat of earning Picture, Actor, Directing and Screenplay nominations in the same year , not once but twice (Heaven Can Wait, Reds) is a Herculean feat in itself. He won the Directing Oscar for Reds as well as the Irving Thalberg Memorial Award and has 14 nominations in all but none of them were in the Supporting Actor category and that’s where Clooney topped him. In fact Beatty has yet to even play a supporting role in any film.

So in terms of sheer numbers of categories nominated is George Clooney now the King of the Oscars?

Well, Walt Disney is the only other person to be named in six categories (most in Shorts) but as head of the studio he just basically stuck his name on a majority of them, something that wouldn’t make him a nominee now. Disney racked up 59 nominations and 22 wins (not counting his 4 Honorary Awards including the Thalberg) in Best Picture (just once for Mary Poppins) , Documentary Short, Documentary Feature, Cartoon Short, Two-Reel Short and Live Action Short. Of course he didn’t actually personally really produce the majority of those so it would be difficult to compare this unique achievement to Clooney’s.

So in the Academy record books it is now Clooney and Disney*. But if George wants this record all to himself with no question whatsoever he might consider taking on one more job like Editing, Costume Design, Songwriting or maybe even Sound Mixing to get that 7th category on his Oscar resume.

Here is another article on the same subject. Apparently he is the one who first brought up the fact that GC is poised to break a record.

The elite Oscar club George Clooney is set to join
How many Oscar-winning actors also boast wins in other categories?

BY GUY LODGE FRIDAY, FEB 22, 2013 10:00 AM

Amid all the fuss over Ben Affleck in the run-up to Sunday's Academy Awards -- with his path from surprise omission to probable vindication, all in the space of a few weeks, likely to be the lasting narrative of this year's Oscars -- there's been markedly little attention paid to his nominated co-producers. That wouldn't normally be very surprising: producers, by and large, don't tend to be as photogenic or as headline-friendly as the Ben Afflecks of this world. But it's slightly different when one of the co-producers in question in George Clooney.

Clooney has been a typically urbane, but graciously quiet, presence on the campaign trail for "Argo" all season long: it's Affleck's film, after all, and he's been selling the hell out of it, so there's no call for his fellow A-list star to switch on the jazz hands.

Still, I can't help thinking the Clooney association has been a subtle ace in the hand for "Argo" from the beginning, underlining the impression of "Argo" as an old-school Hollywood property, made -- perhaps reassuringly, after the foreign invasion of "The King's Speech" and "The Artist" -- by people voters know, trust and are maybe just a tiny bit in love with. The mental image of both Affleck and Clooney clutching Oscars at the podium -- two golden boys squared, if you will -- is one reason I haven't been able to let go of my "Argo" Best Picture prediction since October.

Back then, I wrote about the impressive Oscar record Clooney would claim with a Best Picture nomination for "Argo," one that would bring his career tally up to eight nominations across six different categories -- the latter number unmatched in the modern era (and previously matched, arguably only on a series of technicalities, by Walt Disney). Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, Adapted Screenplay, Actor, Supporting Actor (his one previous win, for 2005's "Syriana") ... the man's done well for himself. It's a stat Pete Hammond picked up on in a column yesterday, but his is the first mention of it I've come across since my idle post last year.

Still, it doesn't stop there for Clooney, who's poised to enter, if not quite the record books, at least a very elite Academy club if/when he wins Best Picture for "Argo" -- as one of a small handful of Oscar-winning actors to have also won competitive awards in non-acting categories.

From Shirley MacLaine (did you know she was nominated for Best Documentary Feature in 1976?) to Alec Guinness (a writing nominee for "The Horse's Mouth") to screenwriter-turned-actress Ruth Gordon, a number of names have scored nominations in multiple fields while landing their lone win for performance. On the flip side, any number of overachieving multi-hyphenates -- Warren Beatty, Orson Welles, Charlie Chaplin, even Affleck and Clooney's buddy Matt Damon -- have been nominated in vain for acting while striking Oscar gold elsewhere.

But only a select few -- five, to my surprise -- have nailed down wins for acting and another filmmaking discipline. Some of them you may remember; some of them may surprise you -- all are listed in the gallery below. Click through to see the company George Clooney looks likely to enter on Sunday.

It's known as Ben Affleck's film. George will always be credited as one of the producers....if anyone ever looks that info up out of curiosity. Alas, his "birthing" of the idea will be overlooked...

Is it wrong that I am pretty much uninterested in the Oscars this year? I really can't get into it. Sure I'll want to see the dresses and any good / cute speeches but I can't imagine sitting through the award ceremony this year actually giving a damn who wins. And I don't think it is award show fatigue because I have been uninterested for months now.

I am more excited about the new Castle episode on Monday night which is the second part of a two-part episode. Which. Looks. Awesome.

I sort of wish he wasn't going and wasn't up for an award. I enjoy these shows better when I am not interested in who wins. I like Seth MacFarland and hope he does a good job. I usually watch the beginning to see how it is introduced then pretty much flip back and forth because I get too nervous for the nominees.

I heard there will be a musical number at the end which seems like fun. I hate that they give the Best Picture award then say good night.

SG - I agree, after sitting through the incredibly long Oscars telecast, the end re Best Picture always seems like such an anti-climax for me. I tend to channel hop throughout the night and spend most of the time seeing who I can spot I the audience!.

Same here. Actually hadn't watched any awards shows in years until coming to COH because there are just too many of them and it seems like a whole lot of rich people patting each other on the back. Add to that the fact that all these rich people are then wearing expensive dresses and suits and jewelry they didn't have to pay for and, if they are in the show, receive gift baskets that until the last few years were valued at $200,000, I just couldn't watch them any longer.

After joining all of you, I now watch for George to appear, then wait thru the opening segment and move on. I pop back in now and then.

I've always watched the Oscars, usually for the fashions, couples, the glamour behind the night. If I like who the host is then I am in for a late evening. This year Im obviously interested in Argo and then Django so I'll be having a late one fuelled by coffee and chocolate, perhaps a wine or 3.

Hi Oof

5 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz), Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound Editing.

Golden Globe Winner - Best Screenplay (Quentin Tarantino), Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz)

PAN - That would be nice, what is the usual protocol, can't remember. Does someone from last years Best Picture hand out the Oscar for 2013?

There don't seem to be any rules for the Best Picture Oscar presenter - all a bit random, but it's supposed to be announced today.

I have several thoughts as I write this which might help them!

How about Emmannuelle and the youngest nominee? (can't spell it!?) Or the boy actors from Afghanistan? Or Streisand and someone else

Or are they going to go for the 'Chicago' ensemble, or a James Bond ensemble?

Or how about the real Tony Mendez handing it to Ben Afleck when Argo wins Best Picture.

James Bond ensemble would be really good, bit partial to the Bond myself,

Won't go long off topic but I also watch Castle and although I've taped it I won't watch it until next week because I'm pretty sure I get irritated if I can't see the two parts at once!

As to this Oscar telecast I'm very much looking forward to it because it is being hosted by Seth MacFarlane.

I don't know if you know who he is but he's the guy who developed and voices several of the characters on the adult cartoon called The Family Guy.

Now I've never really watched the show but he also was the person who put out the movie "Ted" last year with Mark Wahlberg. I realize it's a very crude movie when it comes to what that teddy bear says, but it was also hysterically funny.

But most interestingly about this Seth guy is that even though he's relatively young, he sings old standards from the Rosemary Clooney era and he's really very good!

I'll post a new topic in the party in the kitchen thread with some videos so you can see what I mean.
