Celine Balitran - girlfriend 1996 - 1999 Empty Celine Balitran - girlfriend 1996 - 1999

Ah, the one everyone seemed to like. Including George!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Here's the story of how they met, according to an interview Celine gave to Paris Match in December 1996:

The irresistible doctor of E.R. has the highest regard for Celine, an attractive French student he met in a Paris restaurant.

Still sunday night, George Clooney, alias Dr. Doug Ross, admited that he was unable to engage and could not spend more than six days with the same woman. The six million French television viewers of E.R. (on France 2) the thirty-million Americans, and many others is 66 countries in the world, must not believe this confidence. Last July, the seductive 35-year old pediatrician, next to be the hero of "Batman & Robin" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Uma Thurman, met the woman of his life. Her name is Celine, she is a 23-year old and she is French. Without hesitation, this law student, who works nights in a fashionable bar, walked away from Paris and her studies to join her star in Los Angeles. With devotion, she tells Dany Jucaud the story of a mutual love at first sight.

Paris Match: Do you know the date you met?
Celine Balitran: I know it was in July, I don't know the exact. George knows. He knows everything: the date, time, and what I was wearing. He was working on "The Peacemaker" then with Nicole Kidman. He had a week's vacation and didn't know where to go. Since he wasn't well-acquainted with Paris, he decided to bring two of his friends.

PM: What were you doing at this time?
CB: To make ends meet, I worked from 8 p.m. to early in the morning as a hostess at the Barfly. I sat people, dealt with VIPs. From the time I was 16-years old, I've always had little jobs: waitress, hostess, model...

PM: Take us to the big night.
CB: George arrived in the restaurant with two friends, Waldo and Tom. He didn't have a reservation, and the restaurant was packed. I told him there would be less than an hour's wait. The manager came to me: "Figure it out, find them something at once. The big guy over there is a well-known American actor, George Clooney. You've never heard of him?" Honestly, no.

PM: You never watch television?
CB: Never. But, I admit that when I saw him come in, I completely cracked. He smiled at me, I smiled at him. We saw each other and we couldn't take our eyes off of each other.

PM: Were you dazzled by his looks?
CB: No, by his gaze. I was captivated. It was the most handsome expression in the world. An intense, incredibly warm gaze.

PM: Which one of you spoke first?
CB: Him. For several nights, neither of us said a word. I was very busy, I didn't know where to turn anymore. George came back the next day with his friends. When I saw him come in, my heart skipped a beat. We exchanged some words like two teenagers. Recently, he admitted to me that he had been scared. Me too. He didn't know what to say to me. He didn't dare ask me to dinner...

PM: And after?
CB: He came back every night up to his departure.

PM: Did you have someone in your life at the time?
CB: No. Not for four months prior. Neither did George. We say that we were destined to meet. It was spelled out. That can seldom be said. Why did he come to Paris? Why that night? Next, the manager of the restaurant invited George and his friends to spend the weekend at his place, a house in the country. He also invited me. The next day, we went for a walk together in the woods. Again nothing was going on between us. We were walking, side by side. Suddenly, he grabbed me by my arms and kissed me. At that precise moment, I knew that he was the man of my life. The next day, he left for America.

PM: And you were dejected...
CB: I was all worked up. But he called me every night. Two weeks later, when he had some more time off, he came back to Paris to see me. We spent a dream week together. I showed him the things I loved about Paris; "le Marais", "les berges de la Seine"...We lived on a cloud. The day before he left, he wanted to know if I would accept his invitation to accompany him to the Emmy Awards on September 8th, in Los Angeles. I said yes immediately, without thinking for one-second.

PM: So then you left for Los Angeles. You'd already been there before?
CB: I had never stepped foot in America before. First, there was the shock of the house. It's lool like a norman house : eight bedrooms, a fireplace in every room, a basketball court, a pool, a forest, a greenhouse, deer, a pig, coyotes... George showed me LA like I had shown him Paris. But on the Harley Davidson. It was great. That night we went for a romantic evening to eat in a little cafe. We have a passion for Japanese and Italian food.

PM: Going back to the first soiree...there on the arm of one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, you became excited?
CB: A nightmare! I had a sublime princess-like dress, something I had dreamed of all my life, the man I loved at my side...Eh well, instead of being in seventh heaven, I was shaking like a leaf in the limousine. I was panicked by the idea of having to face all those photographers. I didn't know how to walk, how to behave. George didn't know what to do to comfort me. I spent the night in a fog. When, after eight days, I had to leave him and return to Paris, it was a veritable heartbreak. We called each other twice a day. After five days, we cracked. We realized we couldn't live without each other.

PM: What did you do?
CB: I liquidated everything the next day. I gave my furniture to my best friend, forwarded my mail, got my papers in order...and informed everyone I was moving to the United States. I left for George's house with three big suitcases; my clothes and my books.

PM: How did your parents react?
CB: At first, I didn't speak to them about my relationship. I knew very well what they would tell me: "Celine, watch out, this is an actor, he will hurt you." But, when they saw how happy I was, they supported me in it.

PM: You introduced him to them?
CB: Not yet. But it will be soon. Since my father speaks a little English, they've already talked on the phone.

PM: How were you received by George's friends?
CB: They adore me. His friends are very important to him. He's had the same ones for 20 years. George has the rare quality of not forgetting people that were there to help him from the beginning. The result: the house is always full. Me, I love that. I have always really liked it like that. Each of them is more bohemian than the other.

PM: Going back, what shocked you most about Hollywood?
CB: The simplicity of the stars compared to French actors. George especially. I have met Arnold Schwarzenegger many times, he is brilliant. He's a bear with the soul of a child. Tom Cruise, too. He's an extraordinary father.

PM: What's your life like in LA?
CB: George works very hard. He's finishing "Batman" and at the same time, he's working on E.R. from Monday through Thursday. He leaves the house around 6:30 a.m. and returns around 7:00 p.m.

PM: What do you do with your day while he's working?
CB: For about a month and a half now, I've been working. I'm an assistant teacher in a kindergarten. I teach 5-year olds to read and write. I have always dreamed of being a teacher.

PM: I thought you wanted to be a lawyer.
CB: Me, too. Four years of law was enough for me. I've turned the page without regret.

PM: Are you ever tempted to become an actress?
CB: Oh how horrible! My first priority when I came here was to find a job. It was out of the question for me to just sit here. I have always supported myself. I couldn't see myself having to ask George for ten dollars to buy a pair of pantyhose.

PM: You were able to speak English before going?
CB: Well enough. At 18, I spent a year in England as an au pair. George doesn't speak a word of French. He promised me that he would learn it for when he meets my parents.

PM: How do you spend your evenings?
CB: Either we go to a restaurant or we stay home for a romantic evening for two. And we cook. I love to cook. I learned some from watching my mother. Every Sunday morning, before a family lunch, we do our bit. George's specialty is pasta "à la bolognaise". Me, I prefer sauce meal. The other night, I made him Beef Burgundy and a chocolate cake. He was happy. I have a real dream life.

PM: The most common, but inevitable, question: Are you going to get married?
CB: We've never talked about it. For now, we're not thinking about it. But, it is obvious to me that, in a love story, there is marriage and children. For now, we live only in the present.

PM: Are you jealous?
CB: George hasn't given me any reason to be. If, in the course of an evening, he sees that I am a little lost, he does everything to reassure me. I always have the feeling that he's afraid of losing me. He, on the other hand, is hyper-jealous. If someone looks at me a little too long, he will quickly let him know that he should look elsewhere.

PM: In a word, you're crazy about him ?
CB: We really live a fairytale. Besides, my friends call me Cinderella. We're madly in love. I didn't know it was possible to love like this. I feel like I've met my other half. When he has five minutes for himself, wherever I am, he comes to be with me. George is an unusual man. Profoundly nice. He is even more tender-hearted than me. Everyone that knows him, adores him. He is always tuned in to others. Full of tact. It is really rare. I confess that I don't know of one of his faults. Every woman dreams of having a man like him in their life. I am very lucky.

PM: Do you have a picture of him in your wallet?
CB: No. On the other hand, he has one of me in his sportbag that he is never without.

note: I had this interview from years ago which I finally rescued from an old floppy disk. I've no idea who translated and transcribed this originally but I owe them many thanks for their work. Katiedot

George Clooney is keeping ex-girlfriend Celine Balitran in the manner to which she's become accustomed - giving her cash, a house and a lawyer to make sure she stays in the country.

The sexy One Fine Day (1996) star says when he split up with French schoolteacher Balitran after three years, he went out of his way to make sure she was still able to maintain her luxurious LA lifestyle.

He says, "She pulled up roots and came here for me. So I felt it became something of my responsibility to make sure that even though we're not still together, her life is not bad because of that. So I made sure that she had a great place to live. And I made sure that she had cash. And still talk to her and make sure that she has a lawyer who will help her with her visa."

Clooney adds that, even though the relationship had ended, he instinctively wanted to help Balitran - because he'd feel too guilty if he didn't. He says, "Quite honestly, I don't want to be sitting in the lap of luxury and hear, 'Well, Celine had to go back to Paris because of the lawyers, or because her visa kicked out or she didn't have any money.' I'm actually a much better ex-boyfriend than I am a boyfriend."

I've wondered the same thing. I guess though, when it's over it's over.

I do think she's the reason he's never had another serious relationship. I think this taught him that he's not good at relationships and rather than keep trying he just quit.

Also, I think it ended quite nastily. I think he learnt a valuable lesson about how women see him and decided that he'd never be taken for a ride again.

Sad.

I agree. I think he was very happy with her and she with him. It is also why I don't believe that any of the latest girls actually move in with him. It cost him alot when it ended with celine and I don't see him putting himself in that sort of position again.

Interview with George in 1998 about how he met Celine:

Q: Is it true that you went after your real-life current lady-love kind of like your character goes after the Jennifer Lopez character in Out of Sight?

A: George [laughing]: Yeah, I basically stalked her. No, I met her at a country home at this party, talked with her, and followed her to this bar she was working at. But I'm kind of proud of myself for doing that. As a kid in high school -- and even in college -- I was the kind of kid who'd be sitting at a bar and staring at some girl and she'd be staring back at me and I'd never go over and talk to her -- and then I'd go home and beat my head against the wall and think, "Why didn't I talk to her?!" So, in my old age, I've finally gotten a little more brave.

What I like about this is his admission that he wasn't the kind to approach women when he was younger.

Has history been revised here? I am sure that in an interview he said that he met her in the bar she worked. So two years after he met her, the story changed from him meeting her when she was working to him meeting her at a party (look, they run in the same circles), at a country house no less, then he followed her to her place of employment and he openly pursued her (because at heart he is a true romantic)? Ok. Sure. It's not like he hasn't revised the history of how he met the other women in his life. Do you think this was one of the first versions of what would later become the standard Clooney whitewash for his women?

And do I have anything to back up my snark? You bet I do. People Magazine (it's awesome they have their archives available online) from the Sexiest Man Alive edition (the 1st time). 17th November 1997.

"He's now happily ensconced with former French law student Celine Balitran, whom he met in a Paris nightclub in 1996 on a break from shooting The Peacemaker. Balitran, who speaks English fluently, was working as a waitress in the trendy Barfly when Clooney and a Paris newspaper columnist stopped in for drinks. "The next day he calls and says, 'How can I get to know this beautiful girl?' " recalls the writer. "So I suggested he take her for a moonlight walk by the Chateau de Versailles because it's very romantic. He said, 'Great idea.' Then after months of not one word, a few weeks ago, I got a call from Celine saying, Thank you, I'm in love with George in Los Angeles.' "

Yes there was some revision also the law student part not too sure she had even started and she threw it all away when she moved in with him. She did some part time work for free at some childcare place and got signed to some model agency. I don't think she did alot of that either. I remember reading and laughing at an interview she gave where she said she was happy just choosing which dishcloth to use or something. Basically she was happy being a homemaker for George and she had no other ambition. But she lasted 3 years so he must not have had too much trouble having a sort of wife.

You are absolutely right Watching and Dex. I think his stories change to fit the situation.

Basically she was happy being a homemaker for George and she had no other ambition. But she lasted 3 years so he must not have had too much trouble having a sort of wife." But, wasn't it stated somewhere that he was NEVER home and that was one of her reasons for leaving? She got tired of choosing dishcloths and he got tired of having a sort-of wife I guess.

Why is it that any of his GF's who has not modeled-acted before meeting him, always changes their job after meeting-dating him? Is this the only way they can hang around for more than a minute?

Yep, his girlfriends typically end up as 'models' even when it's clear that they're not models. I think that's his doing. I think George likes to be seen as a man who dates the 'glamour girl.' I think for him, it's important that he not be seen as the guy who dates the 'normal, 9 to 5' girls. I don't think he would deign to be that guy. I think a big part of him looks down on the non-model women. If she doesn't look like she just fell out of a magazine (particularly Playboy and Hustler magazine), he's not interested.

I think model is used as a sort of generic term when the lady hasn't a real career path. Yes, he likes them showy and has a definite type. I just don't think anyone with career goals would be attracted to his life style. She wouldn't be available on an as-needed basis, nor would she be willing to put her life on hold. IMO the world of celebrity attracts a certain type. You learn the rules and play by them or your gone. I think that's why G dates the women he does.

I think it's more of him not liking smart, independent career women. When he orders them to be his arm candy for something or other they may tell him to stuff it because they're busy or don't want to. He can't have that now, can he? Wink

They probably go to model school to learn how to do that 'I'm with sexy George looking sexier than you' pout and how to walk in heels without falling down. So naturally they all go into modelling afterwards. Laughing

George does have a type and I have always thought it was because he always new that would ensure he wouldn't fall head over heels and want to marry them. They do his bidding and get money and attention so they both win. The next one will be the same and Eli will date another rich guy like she has always done because she likes being looked after. What I find funny is that we have heard stories of george going out with the girl no one else wanted too he sure doesn't do that now!

Just found an old interview in my files. Not sure where this originally came from though but I assume it's correct.

I warn you now that if you found Elisabetta's "fariy tale" romance nauseating, you may find this just a little bit on the sickly sweet side.

Rich, beautiful, famous, they live in essence the American dream
A romantic weekend in LA Next to Clooney, 36, the new darling of
American cinema, Celine Balitran, a 23-year old French woman has
become the "little fiancee' of Hollywood.

Their love story is like a movie screenplay, but it doesn't come off like a comedy. In a red Corvette convertible with leather interior and lustrous body work, Celine has discovered a life that is like a dream one would read in a romance novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. But, it's only for her that George plays the role of magnificent lover, in a Gatsby-like cap and black sunglasses.

Celine is a fair, well-dressed darling that keeps her hair blonde. Love at first sight last year was not a flash in the pan. Nine months later, after a break in Paris from filming a movie, George is still with the young waitress from the fashionable restaurant, the Barfly. Not an actress, not a renowned star, in his eyes, he liked the French student as soon as they spoke.

Today, in LA, they live a passionate life that needs no oath: "We love each other too much to get married." Celine confided to our reporter Dany Jucaud.

Paris Match. In the Parisian grayness, their love story is like a burst of
fresh air.

Q: Are you still living a fairytale?
A: Our meeting will always remain a fairytale, but the more time goes by, the more we realize that we are living a real, beautiful love story that becomes more fascinating everyday.

Q: The question the world wants to ask: How did you land one of the most attractive men in Hollywood?
A: George is seductive, that's true. He likes to be attractive, like all men. No more, no less. Everybody falls under his charm. Men as well as women. I've never met anyone so popular.

Q: You didn't answer my question. He can have any woman he wants. What's special about you?
A: I've never asked him, but I've asked myself more than once! What I think he likes about me...(she reflects for a long moment) it's that I am someone that is profoundly simple and real. I never sulk. I am always in a good mood, smiling. And besides that, he tells me that when I'm natural, he finds me sexy! He could never put up with a woman who spent all her time in beauty salons or shopping. My great happiness is taking care of the house. I'd rather buy dishcloths for the kitchen than a dress. At the moment, I am busy redecorating the house. I want to make it a little more feminine, warmer. I've changed the couches and added carpet. When we have time, we go to the flea market. We buy little paintings. Recently, we found a magnificent chandelier. George has given me carte blanche. He told me, "I trust you French good taste."

Q: Does your heart still beat faster when you see him?
A: Oh, yes! Our love is even more intense than in the first days. As soon as he has five minutes free, he concentrates on me. When I have to get up early to go to the kindergarten where I volunteer, he insists I wake him. And vice versa. It's out of the question to start the day without having breakfast together. We wake up in each other's arms, happy to be together, and we can't wait for the evening to be together again.

Q: Do you call each other during the day?
A: Never. I wouldn't think of it.

Q: What's most attractive about him?
A: He's completely sincere. I have never doubted him, definitely now less than ever. He never says anything he doesn't mean. When he makes promises, he keeps them. He's honest, straightforward. It fascinates me that he is always positive and enthusiastic about whatever I tell him. He supports me in everything. He always tells me, "Do it, Celine, don't be scared, go for it!"

Q: You tell him about everything you do?
A: Everything. Even the silly things. At night, I tell him what I'm going to do the next day. Each morning, I go to school from 8 a.m. to noon, keeping myself busy with the volunteer work I do with little children. I have to prepare my lessons the day before. If there's something I don't understand, George explains it to me. He's always telling me that to teach you have to be a little bit of an actor. He tells me that's how you get the attention of a child. Yesterday, I taught my little darlings about the life of a bee and how to tie their shoes. When I got home, George wanted me to describe it all in
detail. He didn't do it to please me, but because he was truly interested.

Q: What has he introduced to you?
A: American music. When the two of us are in the car, we listen to rap music like crazy and sing along. Me, I'm much more serious. I'm teaching him French history. I taught him the history of all the Paris monuments.

Q: Does he talk to you about his career?
A: Yes, but I'm not in showbiz. I listen, but I don't give him advice. On the other hand, when he went to the world premiere of "Batman", I went with him.

Q: How do you spend your weekends?
A: When he works all week, we don't go anywhere. Every Sunday, it is customary that we invite about 20 people over to the house. We do our bit, we throw a big barbecue. George does the shopping. We put out a big buffet and everyone helps themselves. We play tennis, basketball, we swim, we watch sports on TV. we have practically no friends from the film industry. No stars come to the
house. For George, his friends are sacred. He's had the same ones for 20 years.

Q: What do you do during the week?
A: We spend as much time as we can alone together. We go to little Japanese restaurants. Most of the time we stay home and I cook. He adores that.

Q: Your parents recently came to spend a week in LA. Was it the first time they met George?
A: Yes. They stayed at the house. We had a great time. I didn't have anything at all to worry about. They've never been to LA. We went sightseeing. My brother and sister were here a few weeks earlier. I can tell you that LA is no longer unknown to me. Everytime George turned around he would find us and play guide for us. He took them to the set of E.R. twice. Imagine! George introduced them to all the actors. They were wild with joy.

Q: They were able to communicate with each other?
A: When we knew they would be coming, George told me he was going to learn French so he'd be able to talk to them. We didn't get anywhere with that. It's partly my fault. I'd rather they speak English to him. Happily, my father sorted it out. With my mother, I did some translating. In leaving, my father said to me, "He's a really good guy, this George. You're very lucky." I can tell you one thing, if they hadn't liked him it wouldn't have changed anything.

Q: And you, have you met his parents?
A: They spend time at the house. I've also met his grandmother. His father is a journalist. They are charming people. The adore my accent. George has always been with actresses, I think that it pleased them that I wasn't one.

Q: What would you like the people to know about George?
A: That they shouldn't believe the nonsense they read in the tabloids. That they shouldn't judge us based on that. It was fate that joined us. There wasn't an ulterior motive, any calculation on my part. I don't want anyone to think for one-second that I grabbed him because of his fame.

Q: It wasn't that long ago that a woman told the press that she had an affair with him.
A: George was furious. Me, I wanted to shoot her. It is a groupie that
pursued him for months. He didn't know what she would stir up. I think that they met in passing one time in a hotel hallway. She was able to gain entrance everywhere. She even got onto the set of "Batman" with a fake badge. She even said she was moving into the house that we were already living in together. I know that after she told her story she was sent to jail. It hurts me because some people believe the bad things that are written and said about him.

Q: Did you ever say, "It's too hard to live with a star. I shouldn't have come here."?
A: George is the most ordinary guy, the easiest to live with that I've ever met in my life. Our relationship is built entirely on trust. I have no worries.

Q: Let's go back to the rumors. Is it true that you're going to get married?
A: It's completely false. Marriage is a subject that's never come up. We love each other too much to get married.

Q: He wants you to get pregnant?
A: I don't know who invented that one. I absolutely love children, but it is out of the question for now. We'll wait until we get to that point. We want to have time for us. Our love story has just begun. We have our whole lives ahead of us.

Q: And this diamond bracelet that George gave you for your engagement, where is it?
A: (She bursts into laughter.) Stop! We were never engaged and I never got any diamonds. The jewelry is not my trick. He covers me with enough gifts like that. He gave me the most beautiful present, I love it. It is the most precious of all.

Q: And you, you give him gifts?
A: Lots. The other day I made him a little bouquet of red roses. He was wildly happy.

Q: You told me the last time we met, that the first time George took you to a soirée in Hollywood you were so intimidated that you shook like a leaf. Do you still tremble?
A: Now, it's a cinch. It's funny, I would see all these people on marquees along the Champs-Elysées and now I shake hands with them. After a while, we all meet again. Actors, here, are very nice. They don't have big heads. When you get to know them better, you discover that whether in Paris or Hollywood, it's the same everywhere, there are marvelous people and there are idiots. I have a soft spot for Schwarzenegger. He's not like the image he presents. He
is very intelligent, very gentle.

Q: Who most impressed you?
A: Clint Eastwood. I was recently at his table for a soirée. I was so
intimidated, I didn't dare open my mouth.

Q: Why?
A: First, I still think that people will make fun of my accent. Then, at the same time, I was thinking if I tried to talk to him about his last film I would seem ridiculous. And then, I knew nothing about his private life. I was content to just look at him during dinner. You will think I'm childish, but I admit that when Tom Cruise, who is a very good friend of George's, told him that he thought I was "brilliant", it made me extremely happy.

Q: Are you making plans for the future?
A: One week at a time, no more. We live completely in the present.

Q: You are now treated like a star, aren't you? Does that please you?
A: You get used to it all. And then it could be worse, right?

Last July, in a Paris restaurant, the very seductive pediatrician from E.R. laid all his charm on Celine Balitran, law student by day, Barfly waitress by night. Timetable question, was Celine a suitable match for the hit TV star? She was the only one that didn't recognize the face of the client on June 1st. Since, Celine failed to return to school, but her American accent has improved considerably. She flew in behind Batman V to live on the coast in LA. And, her parents took a trip to see her and to meet George who, in spite of a busy schedule working on new episodes of E.R., found time to play the tour guide.
The company of celebrities may have run him off, but these normal people delighted him. As for Celine, he admits to first liking her naturalness and sincerity. A French version of beauty, the opposite of American serials.

In July 1996, a photographer recognizes the anonymous Barfly client and puts him next to a ravishing waitress. Nine months later, George Clooney acquaints Celine Balitran's parents with the fashion of American life: shorts, sweats, and sneakers.

Love and success at the same time, last September 17 George Clooney turned out at the premiere of "One Fine Day" the first summer film to head the bill (with Michelle Pfeiffer) without letting go of Celine's hand held behind her back.

@Atalante: what?????

STAR MAGAZINE
April 2002

For once, George Clooney is coming up short. The last great love of his life, his galpal of three years Celine Balitran, is marrying someone else.

Balitran, the pretty French teacher whom the heartthrob star of Ocean's Eleven and The Perfect Storm uprooted from Paris in 1996 and set up in LA, is joining a scriptwriter named David Rosenthal, 32, in holy matrimony.

Does Clooney want to wish her good luck?

"Nope!" said Clooney publicist Stan Rosenfield.

Not even send her his best wishes? "Nothing!" the mouthpiece declared.

If George is going to pull a Benjamin Braddock stunt - you know, Dustin Hoffman crashing his girlfriend's wedding in The Graduate and stealing her away - then he'll have to travel.

Balitran, whom George took care of financially when they split, is renting a small castle near King Louis' famous Versailles palace for the May 4 wedding.

"She's happy with David," a pal said. "He's reliable and provides her the security that George never could."

Balitran, 27, now a Warner Bros production assistant, started dating the dude shortly after she gave Clooney, 40, the boot in September 1999.

Clooney wouldn't marry her after three years of dating, so she called it quits.

Gorgeous George, meanwhile, moved on to Bridget Jones's Diary star Renee Zellweger and is currently with a French-Canadian restaurant waitress.

"Celine was the big of love of his life," said the Balitran source.

"If he says it doesn't bother him that she's getting married, he's full of it."

Bingo! Celine too, joined Ford modelling agency and modelled for Dior . . . and Asda . . . (a supermarket chain in the UK, which I believe is now owned by Walmart)

From The Sun newspaper (a UK tabloid) in April 1998

By George! Here's Celine Balitran, the French beauty who captured TV star George Clooney's heart, modelling new evening wear from Asda.

Celine, 25, was chosen by the Asda design team to front their latest range called George's Girl - after her relationship with the ER heart-throb.

An Asda spokesman said: "We chose Celine because she is intelligent, has natural beauty and our customers can relate with her."

Former waitress Celine has been dating George since she served him in a Paris restaurant over two years ago. Since moving to the US, she has become a law student and successful model - appearing on the front of Elle and Vogue magazines.

Celine fell in love with the Asda range. She said: "I love it and the prices are great value. I only wish there was something similar in the States. I like simple things. I love the black trousers and bronze top, they are exactly what I'd go out in. I can't believe these are supermarket clothes!"

he man behind the styles is George Davies - the designer who created Next in the eighties.

The glamorous range includes crochet dresses, shiny suits and sparkly knits with brilliant low prices to match.

Post by Katiedot Mon 11 Jul 2011, 21:20

You Magazine (the magazine supplement to the Mail on Sunday in the UK) January 1999

"Dior diva
Why cover girl Celine has George Clooney and John Galliano at her feet.

Inside, a double page picture of Celine lying out on a couch reads:

"Celine's natural success
First commitment-phobic George Clooney insisted she move into his Hollywood mansion. Now John Galliano has invited her into the House of Dior. Why do doors open so easily for Celine Balitran?"

The article:

"Don't you just hate Celine Balitran? Not only has she managed to snap up one of the world's most eligible men - George Clooney - as a boyfriend, but she's now modelling some of the world's most desirable couture, Dior, as well. In doing so she joins an exclusive club of Dior-dressers including
Nicole Kidman, Demi Moore, Kate Moss and Amber Valetta. How did this all happen to someone who, a mere three years ago, was a 21-year-old Parisian law student, paying her way by working at night in a restaurant?

The fact that George Clooney liked the food had a lot to do with it. Or, to be more precise, the service. 'He came to the restaurant every night,' Celine says. 'Then he asked me to go to the Emmy Awards with him in Los Angeles. I said yes without knowing what that was. When we stepped out of
the limousine, everyone went mad, shouting, "George, George!" I turned to him and said, "Who on earth are you?"'

She says she really had no idea he was so successful. 'It was before ER was shown in France. I fell in love with a normal guy, not a celebrity. I've never been a fan of film stars anyway,' she adds, for good measure. 'My number one pin-up is Francois Mitterand.'

Celine has not however, done too badly out of the fact that her anonymous admirer turned out to be a global pin-up. The Dior shoot was one of her first assignments as a model - not bad considering she only went on the books of the Ford model agency a few months ago. 'To begin with I didn't
know if I would like it, if I would live up to their expectations,' she says. 'George was very excited for me, but I didn't want to trade on his name. So I got my book together and went to castings like a beginner.

'I didn't get work immediately, then the Ford office in Paris called me and said, "Incredible news, Dior want to shoot you and Galliano wants you in his show." I was half crazy with fear and excitement. I couldn't wait to meet Galliano. At first he seemed shy, and wore a simple grey suit - funny when you think how eccentric and theatrical he is. I was so relieved when the dress he chose for me fitted perfectly. It was the reassurance I'd been waiting for.

'I adored the collection,' she adds. 'All the khaki and red. There was a magnificant Russion atmosphere about it all - although I never have the guts to wear red. I love it, but I would feel as if everyone's eyes were on me. So I cheat: my wallet is red. It's a little trick of mine.'

Since moving in with Clooney, Celine who juggles modelling with part-time volunteer work in a primary school, has had to develop a thick skin. 'The media is constantly telling lies about us,' she says. 'If you believed the papers, since I met George, I've been pregnant five times, we've been getting married at least 30 and separated a hundred - always because of Max, George's pot-bellied pig.' Clooney is very fond of Max. 'He isn't interested in people telling him how wonderful he is,' says Celine. 'He's
much more impressed when people are nice to Max.'

When she's not keeping Max on her side (her secret is a stash of dried fruits), Celine keeps the man in her life happy by not letting LA spoil her. 'George likes the fact that I'm always happy, smiling and natural,'
she says. 'He finds it sexy. He couldn't stand a woman who spends her days shopping.' Last July, when on holiday at the lavish Cap Eden Roc Hotel in Cap D'Antibes, she shocked celebrity-watchers by doing her own laundry. 'The home is my great passion,' she says. 'I would far rather buy tablecloths and tea towels than a dress.'

Such tendencies might seem incongruous for a Dior muse, but Celine believes it helps keep things in proportion. 'I like shuttling between the real and the imaginary.' she says, which is why she continues with her school work. 'Children are like magic,' she explains. 'They keep you on the right track. For kids, as for me, everything is either yes or no, nothing-in-between.'

And the question of yes or no, or even will they or won't they? has been hanging over Celine and George since reports circulated that she had threatened to leave if he didn't marry her. Clooney, 37, has been married before, briefly, to Talia Balsam. The couple divorced in 1992, and although he dated a string of women before meeting Celine (including Cameron Diaz, Courtney Cox and Naomi Campbell), Clooney is notoriously cautious about remarrying. 'I've been married once before' he has said, 'and I'm not going to rush into that again.'

For her part, Celine is keen to have a family, but all in good time. 'I want to have children, but not right now,' she says. 'I am young, and George and I have only just started out professionally. But he does help me with my work with children - he did some cute drawings on my little students' first grade certificates. Did you know he was a great caricaturist?"

As is by now abundantly obvious, Celine is George's staunchest supporter. A woman who really believes in standing by her man. And it is her very un-American view of relationships that helps keep them together. 'Above all, I want to be there for him,' she says. 'In the film milieu, one needs support. George wouldn't be forgiven any mistake. People expect him to always be perfect. This pressure can be dreadful. He wants to be 100-per-cent good, 100-per-cent loved.

In all languages, it seems. At last year's International Film Festival at Deauville, Clooney won an award for Out of Sight, Celine was there. 'He wanted to say something in French,' she remembers, 'I whispered, "Just say Bonsoir la France." So he walked to the stage repeating slowly to himself, "Bonsoir la France, Bonsoir la France." When he got to the mike, he shouted it out and everyone went mad. What a moment.'

Despite her close contacts with Hollywood (she was spotted chatting away animatedly to Gwyneth Paltrow at last year's Dior show), Celine has no plans to follow the well-trodden path from model to actress. 'Many people in Hollywood have approached me, but I have no desire to become an actress. To be an actress, one has to like acting, life on the screen. And that's just not my thing.'"

Post by Katiedot Mon 11 Jul 2011, 21:47

I'm not so sure any more Hathaross. The more I go back through the old files, the more I question things.

Such as the fact she said she had no idea who he was, when she also said that when she seated him at the bar where they met, her boss told her he was a famous american actor who she should give VIP treatment to.

Plus there's the endless debate over what she actually did for a living: was she a kindergarten teacher? a model? a student? a lawyer?

Anyway, here's another interview with her from the archives:

How to catch a Clooney

French kindergarten teacher and fledgling model, Céline Balitran, has captured the heart of the "sexiest man alive", actor George Clooney (right). So, what's the secret to her elegant, feminine look? NW persuades Céline to tell all ...

NW: How does a day in your life start?
Céline Balitran: My normal day always starts with a long shower and then I like to put on my make-up and sit down to eat a good breakfast. George and I don't get a chance to sit down together because our schedules are so different. But I'm always hungry when I get up and I usually have toast, yogurt and coffee.

NW: Do you watch what you eat?
CB: Yes, although I don't diet. The big secret is that I don't eat between meals. I have my three meals a day and no snacks. Lunch is usually a salad and a sandwich and my evening meal is a good steak and fries.

NW: What food is your biggest weakness?
CB: I love chocolate cake and cheesecake, those are my worst temptations. I indulge in them twice a week, when we go out to eat.

NW: What is your daily skin-care routine?
CB: I put refried beans and guacamole on my face. It doesn't make me look any better, but it tastes good! No, seriously though, I do have a facial once a month. I go to a girl in Beverly Hills who uses all-natural products. I also have a weekly manicure and pedicure. I like to feel clean and take the skin off.

NW: What is your favourite cosmetic in your make-up bag?
CB: For daytime I love Stila - I wear their natural lipsticks and powder. In the evenings I wear make-up by Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent because I've worn their products since I started using make-up.

NW: Your biggest beauty secret?
CB: Cleaning my face every night. When you go on a photo shoot they plaster tons of make-up on your face, so you really have to take very good care of your skin. I always take my cleanser with me and clean off every scrap of make-up immediately after we're finished.

NW: What do you keep in your handbag at all times?
CB: Mascara and powder. They are always on hand for those last-minute times when I have to go to a meeting or to a casting, for instance.

NW: Describe your fashion style.
CB: I'm not into high fashion. My dress style is very simple and classic - old-fashioned, like Grace Kelly. I prefer black, navy blue or grey because I think it's beautiful to see women wearing classic, timeless
clothing you can wear more than once. You learn a lot about style from your friends and magazines. These days I learn by talking to the designers who advise me what works and what doesn't.

NW: Who is your favourite designer and why?
CB: I don't have a favourite designer - they're all amazing in their own way. Each has their own distinctive style so my choice depends on the occasion. For awards ceremonies I wear Armani.

NW: What do you like to wear when you are not glammed up?
CB: When we are relaxing, George and I like to stay at home. So, I really live in casual clothes like jeans. I have an old flannel shirt that's about six years old and I love it - I can't bear to part with it.

NW: Do you have favourite accessories?
CB: I have always been a watch freak. I love watches of any kind, from Swatches to antique ones and pocketwatches. I have many different ones.

Then there's this from the Express newspaper in November 1998 (bear in mind that they split up in early 1999 when you read it). This is someone's account of the article, not the actual article itself.

Heading: "Clooney's girl would like to know if
he's only acting in sexy new role" its about George's workload and the
effect it has on Celine and her supposed jealousy about his screen
lovers. There's a "quote" from Elle MacPherson, saying her Batman love
scenes were ruined by Celine's jealousy. "Elle claimed Miss Balitran
insisted being on the set during every clinch, terrified that the
model-turned-actress would try and steal her man. 'I was looking
forward to kissing George, what woman wouldn't,' said Elle. 'But she
just wrecked all of my concentration - I could feel her eyes boring into
me. I was shaking with nerves.'"

Referring to Jennifer Lopez it says, "Clooney's insistence on
hand-picking his latest leading lady - for the sake of authentic sexual
chemistry, of course - would suggest there may be a reson for his
girlfriend's obsession. But he will only say: 'There has to be an
instant attraction between us. If the audience can't see that then
we're lost.'"

I've just added the story of how they met (according to Celine) to my very first post in this thread.

What struck me was the similarity between this interview and some of the ones we've been reading by Betty. I'm beginning to wonder if he gives them a script.

Very slick, and I'm only on the Celine Balitran stuff - just wait till I get to Lisa Snowden!

Here's a last one, post-split:

NY POST.....By BILL HOFFMANN May 2000
Vogue is turning from high fashion to hunkdom - making sexy George Clooney its new cover boy!

Calling the former "ER" heartthrob "the world's most eligible bachelor," the mag features Clooney with his arms around supermodel Gisele on the cover of its June issue.

Inside, Clooney and Gisele are seen frolicking on a beach, playing a sexy game of touch football and cuddling on the grass.

"Women are mad for George Clooney. He's America's No. 1 leading guy," Vogue's Patrick O'Connell said.

But while the saucy Herb Ritts photos make it seem like George and Gisele are a very cozy couple, insiders say their intimate moments were only staged for the camera. And the salt-and-pepper-haired Clooney admits, "I kept saying to Herb Ritts, 'Herb, do I look like her father? Do I?' After all, I am 39 and she's 19!"

Clooney - who played Dr. Doug Ross on "ER" for five years before quitting the show last year - is only the second cover boy Vogue has had.

The first was Richard Gere, who graced the cover with then-wife Cindy Crawford back in 1992.

And while millions of women will definitely go gaga over Clooney's pulse-pounding photos, he admits he's not all he's cracked up to be.

"I'm a much better ex-boyfriend than I am a boyfriend," Clooney tells the mag.

The divorced actor last year split from longtime girlfriend Celine Balitran, a French law student, after he moved from Paris to L.A. to be with him.

"She pulled up roots and came here for me," Clooney explains. "So I made sure that she had a great place to live. And I made sure she had cash."

Maybe one reason Clooney has had a checkered romantic past is his attitude toward family - he doesn't want children.

"I don't have any interest in them. I just don't think that it's something you can do casually," he confesses.

Clooney stars in the upcoming sea drama "The Perfect Storm" and his last movie, "Three Kings," is now out on video.

Oh, ok. One more!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

And here's how it ended:

New York Post's "Page Six" September 2000

Did Clooney's ex cost him $4M?

GEORGE Clooney may have gotten paid $12 million for "The Perfect Storm," but he had to give $4 million of it to his ex-girlfriend Celine Balitran to avoid a palimony suit.

According to E! Online gossip maven Ted Casablanca, pals of the Hollywood hunk's say the French beauty has been set on revenge ever since Clooney dumped her last year after three years together, because he wasn't ready to marry and have kids.

Spies say Balitran, once voted one of People magazine's "most beautiful" people, has also been spreading the word that Clooney has tried to ruin her budding acting career by bad-mouthing her all over town. In June, Clooney told Vogue that even though they were quits he'd set up the model/schoolteacher-turned TV presenter in a "great" pad, gave her cash and hired a lawyer to help with her visa.

A rep for Balitran said, "We don't deal with her personal life," while Clooney's people didn't return calls to PAGE SIX.

Meanwhile, Clooney, who recently moved into the W hotel on Lexington and 49th for a week, hasn't looked back since the split. In the past several months he's been linked with Lucy Liu, Charlize Theron and actress Traylor Howard, as well as the bevy of unknown beauties he reportedly picked up during junkets for "The Perfect Storm."

I appreciate al the articles, but I find it odd tlaking about exes, espcially the ones who are already married. Just my opinion. But I am glad to know that he enjoyed dating Celine who was not a celebrity/actress/model when they met.

The similarities are very interesting. Makes you wonder. Maybe it is the type of girl he likes. I really wish he’d grow out of it and find something more meaningful! I know he’d be a lot happier, no matter what he says!

Yes Celine could be sooo sweet it could put you in a diabetic coma. The first interview she did she actually said she got tricked into. The excuse was she didn't know she was doing wrong, but there are several interviews after that. I notice it went from we wake up in each others arms every morning and have breakfast together to I have breakfast George is too busy. Things always start off well but you can generally tell when things are going bad. Celine wanted children that was always clear and didn't seem to believe George didn't. Something all the girls have problems with. His family loved her Nick actually spoke of her in one of his articles and he said the whole family liked her and she was wonderful etc. In the end I think George knew marriage and children were what she wanted and he felt guilty he wasn't going to give them too her. I do think he really loved her though!

It's good to hear that, I hope he can find someone that makes him happy as those days or happier. It got me thinking, if he didn't marry her and didn't have kids with her, he means it. In other words, he will never marry and will never have kids, ever! Women out there who wishes to be the new Annette Benning, forget it! it's not gonna happen ladies!

I found this interesting...she never said she did not have the talent or skills...it was not just her thing. hmmm...

Well, Eli didn't read this one either, or she didn't understand it...

Maybe he shouldn't fall in "love" so fast and furious, it really sounds like all of these woman had something special with him in the beginning, but with all it wasn't enough to keep the relationships going though tough times, separation, boredom, or temptation. His lifestyle doesn't make taking time to get to know a person easy, so it doesn't seem likely he'll change.

Celine Balitran - girlfriend 1996 - 1999 Empty Re: Celine Balitran - girlfriend 1996 - 1999

Post by Katiedot Tue 12 Jul 2011, 15:39

Here's an interview she gave after their break up. Her new boyfriend in this article (Christian) is rumoured to be the one she cheated on George with, although it seems he was also cheating on her with several others. Anyway, who knows?

Oh la! magazine, 6 October 1999.

The story of Celine looked like a modern fairytale in which however,
we couldn't really believe, if we dare to say (ya know, too beautiful to be true !). Despite what sceptic people can say, the passion that have shared C and G for almost 3 years, has today become a real strong friendship. For the first time since their break up, C told us about her happiness, her secrets, her hopes ... and her unshakeable faith in the future next to Christian her new boy friend.

Ohla : "which memories and feelings did you keep from your very first meeting with GC ?"
CB "It's of course a memory that i'll never forget and i tell ya that if i had to do it again, i wouldn't chane anything and i'd do it again. Between G and I, it has been a sudden love at first sight. I've lived a real love stor for 2 years and a half. Even if we were living in Hollywood, we were a real normal couple and, like in every couple, sometimes people take different ways ... We realised that in our relation, there wasn't anymore future for neither of us. Today, we are really good friends, we're seeing and phoning each other very often. I don't say that our relation is better now that it was before, but it's true that it's very harmonious between us now, and both of us are happy about it. I'd like to add that G is an extraordinary person and I truly hope he'll find a woman as extraordinary to live besides him".

Ohla : "When you first met G, ya didn't know anything about him and couldn't imagine his huge fame in the U.S. At the very first, what did seduce ya in this guy ?".
CB : "How to tell you ... it was the man. No need to look further, he was there. I know it can seem a bit innocent today but G reprsented for me, all that a woman can desire. Charming, a strong sense of humour, intelligent, so handsome ... He has totally messed up my lie ! 2 and a half weeks after, i left with him to L.A. At the beginning, it was only for short vacations ... and then, we decided to live together. But i couldn't envisage to live with him without keeping on working. So, i did my best to find a job and i finally got that job in a school, that i'm still doing now."

Ohla : "Is it easy, so suddenly, to enter in a big star's life ?"
CB : "Sure ... G has told me that he was an actor, but i was really far from thinking that he was so famous. E.R hasn't opened in France at that time and no one in my country couldn't imagine the success the T.V show already had in the U.S. Not along after my arrival in L.A, i went with G at the Emmy Awards. When we came out the limo, people started yelling his name ... and some of his fans were crying ! I was completely thrown in a world that i've totally ignored the existence since then. Besides, some people seemed to know me because they were also shouting my name. I've never understood how people could have known qo much on our lives so quickly"

Ohla : "Has this experience changed your personality or the way you face your life ?"
CB : "Lie with G has been my 1st real experience of life with a man. But i don't feel like i'm realy different since then. I've always been very independant. G and I were from different cultures, families, ways of life ... But everything was so simple and easy ... and fast. Living with G was easy".

Ohla : "Do you think, today, after thinking a bit about it, that you may not have been mature enought to face such an experience that ya were not prepared to live ?"
CB : "I don't think i was too young. I've left my parents when i was 18 to go study and live one year in the U.K alone ... so i had already an experience of what could be life abroard, far from my family. And G has always protected me a lot too. I knew that i had done the right choice in living with im, here in L.A".

Ohla : "What were your parents' feelings whn ya went to L.A to live with G ?"
CB : "My parents, such as my sister and my brother have always suported in all that i was doing. I left them knowing that if things turned bad, my family would always be there for me. And, i wanna say that they sill have very good relations with G. They came to visit us many times in L.A and we also came to Paris. Their affection for each other was very strong and it has never ended, althought G is not my by friend anymore."

Ohla :"How did ya live with all the rumours about your relation ?"
CB : "At the begining, it was hard but we had really fast decided to laught about all of this. In fact, we didn't understand, neither of us, why so many lies ? There were really funny moments : some journalists wrote that i've asked G to choose between Max and me ! But, the medias have never had influence on our couple. G and I both come from very united family and we were strong enough to face this with serenity."

Ohla : "Can ya tell us what did ya share with G ?"
CB : "Both of us love life passionately. And friends are really important for both of us. We love people. And we wanted a simple life ; we had never needed many assitants or people to help doing the shopping or the cooking. I've always liked to do it myself, it's really important for me".

Ohla : "So, what were your differences ?"
CB : "It was only in the way we consider working. G is an actor, i'm not and i'll never be. He's so passionate by his job that working 7 days a week and 24 hours a day has never frightened him. He had to fight to be where he is now ; i'll always respect and admire him for that !

Ohla : "Didn't ya feel apart of his passion which was taken the biggest part of his life ?"
CB : "No, i've never suffered cause of that. G made me share everything. In our everyday life, there never were fights or shouts. Nothing of these ... What was really important for us, was our future together."

Ohla : "And hw did ya imagine this future ?"
CB : "I wanted to have a real family with children ever if i think i'm still a little young for this. And i also wanted a simplier life, quieter that the ones in Hollywood. But G didn't want to hear about family life.

Ohla : "May be, it was not the good moment for him, yet ?"
CB : "I know that i'll never be the right moment for G. I respect his choice, but it's the reason why G and I could not go further together." I think that both of us have well lived this however. Now, i have plenty of good memories such as our 1st January in Hawaï or our fantastic bike-run that we loved so much

Ohla : "Do you sometimes regret the lifestyle you had with him ?"
CB : "I have no regrets . With G, I've lived the most beautiful parties, i've lived great moments, met Bill and Hilary Clinton, met many stars .. but i've never had stars as real friends ...".

Ohla : "Among all stars you got to know, which one did you prefer ?"
CB : "I really loved the people from E.R, and also Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman (a beautiful couple) and Clint eastwood."

Ohla : "After all of this, isn't it difficult to have a new love story ?"
CB : "No, not at all ... G and I weren't together since 1 year when i met Christian. He's a painter and a photographer : a real artist ! I'm realy in love with him.

Ohla : "How did ya meet him ?"
CB : "First, i fell in love with one of his works that i saw at a friend's. Then, this friend has invited Christian and I for dinner ... and one more time, it was love at the first sight. I met him 4 years ago and since then, i keep saying that it's possible to fall in love intensely more than once. I love his kindness, his self confidence, his gentleness, and his beauty too. And on top of it, i lead a norml life."

Ohla : "You work in a school, do ya enjoy it ?"
CB : "i'm a teacher in an american school for children around 6 years old. They give you so much jy, so much lie, without ever asking for anything".

Ohla : "Did ya always dream of teaching ?"
CB : "Not at all . The only thing i was sure was that i wanted to work with children. But i really like to try many different things. When i was a teenager, i didn't know what i'd like to do : a dancer, a swimmer, a writter, a journalist .... And then, i started studying laws at universit ... but never finished these studies ... and i have no regrets".

Ohla : "When did you begin your career as a model ?" CB :"Ford Agency in L.A contacted me about 1 and a half year ago. It was a totally unknown world for me but i realy enjoy it ! But ... i must say taht i've started this career a bit late , so at 25, people already say i'm old fr this !"

Ohla : "Do ya often come back to France ?"
CB : "It is sure taht in the next months, i'll come back more often that i used to do. I'd love to work for the french television and i've already have propositions, but i know i'll not live in Paris for good again 'cause i like the U.S too much !"

LL, if I remember correctly somewhere there is an article on Celine's pregnancy, I believe she was to give birth sometime around George's 49th birthday, and I think she married or was going to marry the babies father.
