Life's mysterious paths
This women's cells may have saved your life
Henrietta Lacks and her immortal cells
Did you know there is one women whose cells have been multiplied in laboratories across the world? If we weighed all the cells that have come from this one women they would weigh as much as 100 Empire State Buildings. This women's name is Henrietta Lacks and her cells called "HeLa" have been used in many of the greatest scientific discoveries or our time. Her cells have been used to study gene mapping, curing polio, developing cancer drugs, studying AIDS, lukemia and the list can go on. Her cells were even send up to space in a satellite to help us determine if human tissue could survive there.
Henrietta Locks was a poor black women who died of cancer in 1951 when she was just 31 years old. During her treatment, and without her knowledge, a sample of her tumor was send to a doctor at John Hopkins. This doctor had been trying to grow human tissue. They discovered that Henrietta's cells, unlike other human cells, could live and replicate outside the body. If you give her cells nutrients they will live and survive and replicate for what scientists believe is forever. Even if they are frozen and then thawed they will continue to replicate.
Henrietta never knew that her cells would become one of the most important tools in modern medicine. She died in poverty and her husband and children didn't know till many years later that her cells would be one of the most important tools in modern medicine.

Interesting. And a bit scary. I obviosly live in wrong century. I´d prefer the "good old times" when women fainted and wore fancy dresses and walked in the parks under umbrellas...once you got a tuberculosis and fever you died - the end of the story.

I know, it´s bad.
That´s how it is?
I have a bad habit to read science mag at bed, articles like `Nitric Oxide Regulates Mitochondrial Fatty Acid Metabolism Through Reversible Protein S-Nitrosylation` to put me to sleep.
But sometimes there are articles about dying. How stars die, even sun eventually - then I get nightmares...

Here is a link
http://www.sciencemag.org
Right, could be bull shit, and in a way it is: what does it matter for anyone to know if a star is 10 exponent 15 years old instead of 10 exponent 20 ? Nada.
Entertainment (show business) is as demanding for the professionals as any field of science is for scientists. But less so for the regular person like me, who just hear and read about it.
For example age, if let´s say news say they have discovered a new star and calculated it´s age to be x, so how do I know that it is not 15 000 years younger or older?
But if the entertainment news show how she and he are drinking beer together. She is approaching 34 and he is 27. Well, around here she soon qualifies as a cougar and it makes sense to everyone. (even if the act itself doesn´t)

Re: Life's mysterious paths
Speaking of science articles, I really wanted a career in science when I was a kid. After I began working at the University, I would walk down the hallways in the science buildings and look at the showcases full of biology, chemistry and physics research items. If I had been a science major, I could not have read past the first few paragraphs of the textbooks.
MM- Ooh, Mr Clooney!
