RIP Amanda Todd
Sad that this happened to this young girl.
But it's a reminder (especially for those of you out there with kids on computers) that ONE mistake as young teen coupled with the brutal evil of people out there could mean the lose of a child.
Remind your young girls and boys that SEXTING is NEVER a good idea. Once that picture becomes public your life can be over!
Personally I hope they find the person who posted the pictures and also the young man who duped her into coming to see him for sex and his girlfriend and her friends who beat her up.
See I think they are ALL liable for driving this gal to kill herself and should be punished like any other murderers!

Two comments about the video - one I don't think it's appropriate for the person who posted it (or You Tube) to have an advertisement on it - I think making money off a young girl's suicide is sick and I certainly wouldn't buy what the advertiser is selling.
Secondly, the guy in the beginning just started to annoy me with his commentary so I turned him off. He was distracting to the message from the girl. So skip the ad, turn off the sound, (can't stand that Sara song anyway) and just read what the girl puts up there. It's sad as hell.

This video made me cry. The poor girl wasn't even 16 yet. I'll never understand why kids (and people in general) are so cruel.

Re: RIP Amanda Todd
My son did some self-harm when he was in his teens. He survived, thank God. He felt like an outcast, but then realized, with alot of help from some very knowing people, that he was worthwhile. He was one of the lucky ones. And he is wonderful now with his own beautiful family. Others cannot deal with this pain. I pray that someday, somehow everyone can be accepted for who they are, what they are and how they are. Thank you Lorna for finding this and posting it.

Re: RIP Amanda Todd
So sad, is it just me or this situation becoming more and more prevalent these days? In my country there have been lots of teens/young adults who have committed suicide in relation to being bullied, feeling like they are not accepted as who they are. Some of it has been direct bullying in person but most of these tragic stories involve teenagers facing online bullying. There was a recent case where a girl was so tormented at school by her previous best friend, then when she got home feeling somewhat safer, the online bullying started by the same perpetrator, people she had never met were posting vile comments on her facebook page. Her parents went to Court and for the first time I believe in Australia, the parents were able to get a restraining order to stop the perpertrator going anywhere near their child at school or at home including using facebook to bully her. Its been a bit of a test case, so not sure how it will play out on appeal. Something drastic has to be done, have to teach our children resilience, have to do what we can to protect their tenderness.

An indictment on society - lots of pluses about social media, but lots of minuses too, when young adults feel victimised by it.
Just by being around them sometimes for a joke and a chat can make a difference...........

Perhaps we should all take pause and think about what WE post too. I'm on twitter but I use my real name. The reason? Well one reason is because I hope some day to have my writing published so my name recognition would be important. But more importantly, it makes me responsible for what I write there. It's easy to post nastiness when you're not using your real name.
And I plan to think more about what I post here too. I always to try to focus on people's actions and decisions. But sometimes I do get snarky in the pursuit of a laugh. But I have to be careful that what I say can't be construed as mean just to make a point. But I do call out bullshit because I believe honesty is important.
Going back to the story of Amanda - I think she said she was 12 or so when at the request of someone she was chatty with on Skype online asked her to flash him. Which she did. And what does that slime ball do? He first tries to blackmail her and when that didn't work he posted her picture all over her school via Facebook. He then stalked her and found her at her next school.
I'll bet HE didn't use his real name and probably hid behind multiple IP addresses.
I think laws will eventually catch up with the speed of the internet and those type of actions will bring serious consequences to those who set out to ruin a young person's life.

So very sad.
Saw it on TV last night. They were talking about how publicity will affect on those youngsters in similar situation. Fear was that this can launch “copycat” phenomena.
I agree with Lorna, about net and how you write in there.

Re: RIP Amanda Todd
I think it's human nature. People get a kick out of being cruel because it makes them feel better about themselves IMO. I don't think the people who bullied her thought they were doing anything bad or cruel; I'm sure they justified their actions to themselves.cindigirl wrote: I'll never understand why kids (and people in general) are so cruel.
I'm not sure how to respond to this without jumping on my favourite hobby horse and boring you all stupid. Again.LornaDoone wrote:Perhaps we should all take pause and think about what WE post too. I've changed my views a lot over the years. Those of you who remember me from the clooneyfiles site may remember that I was one of the most scathing posters about Lisa Snowdon. Oh, what I wrote was funny, sure, but looking back on it now, I can see that it was mean too. When the mod on that board objected, some posters set up a private site where we could be as mean as we wanted to without censure and I was invited to join.
And join I did. With glee! Nothing better than ripping apart (with humour, of course) a woman who's done nothing other than dress badly, be a bit stupid and date a man who on the surface seemed to be too good for her. Followed by a fabulous bitching session about the man who dated her and everything that's wrong with him for making such a bad choice.
Since then, as you may have noticed, I've changed my views and mellowed a lot. I still have a very sharp tongue and can do snark with the best of 'em but I try to reign it in. I try to keep the nastiness for where it belongs, which in my opinion is when someone has done something genuinely worth criticising. When George lied about not running an Oscars campaign last year and blatantly fibbed about how much he supports women in the movie industry when there was zero evidence of it, I sounded off, full blast. When it's something totally unimportant like a girlfriend not wearing a dress I like or having a hair style that doesn't suit her, then I leave it. It just doesn't matter.
For me it's been a long journey, evaluating what I write - and more importantly - why I write it. I don't pretend for one minute that I've got it perfected and I often still make mistakes, but I'm trying. It's also a journey that I can't make anyone else take, although that still doesn't stop me from having a go!
What Lorna said about being responsible for what you write resonates with me. When I post, in my mind's eye I imagine standing in front of George or his girlfriend and having to justify what I've written about them. Would I be embarrassed to face them? For sure if those bullies who hounded Amanda to death had to say in person, in public and to her face, what they wrote online, they wouldn't say it. That's what stops me from going overboard.
Sometimes, anyway.

Excellent points raised Lorna - I try (and sometimes fail) to be very careful on facebook/forums etc about what I'm discussing and how I articulate what I want to say, mainly as once you've written it down, you can't in some cases take it back!
