Ever wondered what Sudan's politicos think about George's Google hookup? Wonder no more:

Clooney, ENOUGH with the Cameras, Says Embassy of the Republic of the Sudan

WASHINGTON, Dec. 30, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being released by the Embassy of the Republic of the Sudan:

George Clooney, in a typical Hollywood fashion, is advocating for installing watchful 'cameras' on Sudan. Not withstanding the legality of the matter, it is baffling what such an action will accomplish. There are numerous atrocities after all around the globe. In the middle east, for instance, crimes are perpetrated under the blazing lenses of the enormous international media, yet what has that accomplished? Clooney himself has seen the harrowing images on CNN, but when have those moved him enough to condemn this ongoing depravity that is systematically meted out against the innocents!

This action reeks of an ulterior motive that has nothing to do with peace, and Clooney is just the latest face for it. It's an ever changing face, when one begins to recall his fellow actors that have been used and discarded by "Enough's" Prendergast, for example Don Cheadle, Basketball star Tracy McGrady, Mia Farrow etc. The idea is simple. You get the public to jump on a bandwagon through the use of their idols who merely parrot statements that you manufactured to serve your real agenda. In this hysteria, atrocities could be committed with one's full consent because sober and critical thought are curbed.

This is not to say that Sudanese issues shouldn't be spotlighted. On the contrary, Sudan has long been calling for the constructive engagement of the international community. We've always solicited the help of regional and distant countries to peacefully mediate sensitive issues between the parties. This is precisely why peace prevails today contrary to the grim picture depicted by the likes of "Enough Project" and Clooney. Of course things are tense. And that is to be expected given the monumental prospects that loom ahead including the possible partition of the country, an event that cannot be taken lightly anywhere it happens in the world.

Merely Watching Doesn't Affect Change. Rather what counts is meaningful action. Those that are genuinely concerned for the well being of the Sudanese, are today contributing in ways that really have an impact right there on the ground. They're in Abyei helping the communities lay down the foundation upon which coexistence can be possible. They are down there strengthening the ties between the Southern and Northern communities, which will be the basis for cordial relations in the event of separation. They're in Darfur sowing the seeds for the flourishing of peace. They're doing all of this in the absence of self-aggrandizing cameras on their heels. They are the unsung heroes!

Clooney had his chance to make the impact when he snuck into Abyei with all his Cameras a few weeks back. He instead only succeeded in inflaming tensions; the evidence is all over the Washington Post's article published upon his return when he highlighted the plight of one and demonized the other group. With these frivolous actions by "Enough", one is only left to wonder, who's next on the long list of celebrities to be exploited for this crusade, at the expense of genuine search for peace!

It will be interesting to see what the response is from Pendergast and George regarding this allegation that there are ulterior motives but those motives were never articulated clearly in the article. I wonder what they think is John's real motivation and intentions for the area.

The idea is simple. You get the public to jump on a bandwagon through the use of their idols who merely parrot statements that you manufactured to serve your real agenda. In this hysteria, atrocities could be committed with one's full consent because sober and critical thought are curbed.

What "real agenda" could John and George have other than trying to stop a genocide BEFORE it happens? It almost seems as though they're making an allegation that it's the Obama Administration that's interested in ulterior motives. Who else but a super power would have the power necessary to carry out a "hidden agenda"?

Very strange indeed!

Yes, that was exactly what I thought when I read that. They accuse Clooney and co of having ulterior motives, but then don't say what those motives actually are.

Kind of an odd miss given how this press release was otherwise very well written*.

* by that, I mean that I admire the way they've put some fine spin into their accusations.

Maybe the Save Darfur Coalition? Enough has very close ties with them, Clooney's been front man for them on numerous occasions. There are well-documented criticisms of the SDC, questioning their agenda, by well-respected journos and experts in the field with decades long experience of the Sudan. This is not new, there's always been a ? over the SDC's motivations.

That's very interesting Caged. I have not been following the SDC's interaction with this issue. What exactly are the questions regarding their motives in this region other than the apparent concern for the people's safety and establishing new homesteads for those still in the camps.

Who has been reporting otherwise?

Well that's what they ALL want is the oil! Every party involved in the region and even those governments who are NOT in the region, wants the oil.

But I was asking, was what in particular has been questioned with the efforts to relocate and build new villages for those hundreds of thousands that are still living in camps and have no where to go or safe passage even if they did have a destination. I thought that was the purpose of the Coalition in the first place.

Lighter - sent you an email with links. Self-explantory! The SDC is NOT an aid organisation, it is solely a lobbying agency, not one single cent of the $Ms and $Ms of dollars raised through fundraising has gone towards aid in Darfur. It has been spent entirely on advertising and lobbying. This misconception is one of the most worrying things about this organsisation, and just one of many things that caused more than a few cynical eyebrows to be raised.

Thanks Caged, most appreciated. I haven't been following this closely enough, with all the other issues/things in the news constantly here and domestic politics has become a blackhole which consumes much of my time by itself, I'm afraid I'm lacking in info on this.

re: SDC...a lobbying agency? Say no more! I've never seen a lobbying firm that didn't do things that were suspect. All you have to do is watch what happens here on K Street and you know how corrupt the lobby industry is.

Begs the question: Does GTC know about possible SDC controversy? Even if he personally believes in the cause, if somebody legitimately targets SDC, he could get caught in the crossfire. Do you think he has an advisor for all of this Sudan stuff? Like, someone who really knows the score? (and who's working for GTC, not like Prendergast). Or is it STAN? Gawd.

I think Casey might remember his name, but isn't there a cousin or someone Nick knows that peaked George's interest in all of this? He has dark hair. I thought he was George's advisor. Question Question Question

David Pressman. Here's a profile from a couple of years ago.

He's working for the Obama admin now, so I don't think he's 'working' with George now:

I wonder if anyone's replaced Pressman? Prendergast, probably.

Based on the CNN appearance, I think G's pulled ahead on the goatee contest, although I'm not sure why he's groomed his chin that way.

I guess Nick Kristof would also be someone he takes advice from. Again, someone who regularly waves the SDC flag.
