A film producer oversees and delivers a film project to the film studio or other financing entity, while preserving the integrity, voice and vision of the film. They will also often take on some financial risk by using their own money, especially during the pre-production period, before a film is fully financed. Many film producers also have competency in other fields (directors, screenwriters, actors) but that is not always the case.

The producer is often actively involved throughout all major phases of the filmmaking process, from inception and development to completion and delivery of a film project.[1] However, an idea or concept for a film can originate with any individual, including a screenwriter, a director or a producer.

A producer begins by obtaining the rights to create or co-create a feature-length screenplay. The producer oversees the process, which includes coordinating, supervising and controlling major aspects of the project. This includes fundraising and hiring key roles such as the casting director or film director. They'll also influence the hiring of other personnel such as the UPM or line producer and accountant.[2]

From the first draft script, through all stages of production, to the final dub, success or failure rests largely in the hands of the producer. Experience in this field does not come overnight. Rather it is born out of long years of creative and technical know-how, and above all a love for the job and all that goes with it, together with the ability to choose the right talent with which to surround himself.

An executive producer may be a person representing a financial investor in a film project, such as a movie studio or a distributor, but who is not directly involved in the day-to-day production. But on many films today the functioning line producer will receive this credit. It can also be someone with other special interests in the project, such as the author of the book that the film is based on, or one of the movie's key actors who has been instrumental in persuading the studio to do the movie. In such cases, the executive producer credit is mainly honorary.

The role of associate producers and co-producers vary from film to film. They may be part of the producer's support team. The person who found the property but passed it on to a better established producer often gets this credit. The writer often gets some type of producer credit, even if uninvolved in the production.

A line producer is a hands-on role which controls the day-to-day financial and production concerns and is there to support the vision of the director during production. In the 1970s, it was common for line producers to be credited as associate producers. Since the 1980s, however, it has become increasingly common for the line producer to be given the title of Executive Producer, while the initiating producer takes the "Produced by" credit. On other projects, the reverse happens, with the line producer taking the "Produced by" credit. So the two credits have become effectively interchangeable, with no precise definition.

"August: Osage County" to film in Oklahoma

The Oklahoma Film & Music Office and The Weinstein Company announced Thursday that pre-production for the film adaptation of “August: Osage County” has begun in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin September 24, 2012 and last for eight weeks. Shooting will take place at locations in both Osage and Washington counties in Northeastern Oklahoma.

“August: Osage County” is a feature-length motion picture based on the play of the same name written by Tulsa native Tracy Letts. The play originated at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre before moving to Broadway where it garnered five Tony awards including Best Play and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2008.

The story centers on the Weston family whose scattered members gather at the family home in rural Osage County when their patriarch vanishes. The cast includes Oscar winning actresses Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts and will be directed by John Wells, the fiml will be produced by by George Clooney, Grant Heslov, Jean Doumanian and Steve Traxler.

"It is a great honor to be filming in such a scenic and culturally expansive state. AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY would not be possible without the generous support from the people of Oklahoma," said TWC President of Production Dylan Sellers.

The production is utilizing the Oklahoma Film Enhancement Rebate Program, administered by OF&MO.

"We are obviously ecstatic to have a production of this stature filming in our state," says Jill Simpson, director of OF&MO. "They don't come any better than this script, stellar cast, director and stable of producers. Securing August: Osage County was a team effort spanning a couple of years. We are especially grateful for the efforts made by our industry partners at the Bartlesville Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Pawhuska Chamber of Commerce."

"Due to the Oklahoma Film Enhancement Rebate Program, the state's film industry has experienced documented growth which translates into a positive economic impact," said Deby Snodgrass, executive director of the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department.

"Total jobs created just by films in the enhancement program more than tripled from fiscal year 2010 to 2012, and the economic impact of production statewide in FY11 topped $36 million. A project with the stature of AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY is a positive for our state, its film industry and the economies of many communities."

Steve is the not-quite-who-he-seems businessman fiancé of Karen, the self-deluding youngest daughter of the family. Juliette Lewis plays Karen. 'Sherlock' star Benedict Cumberbatch in talks for new Meryl Streep movie Actor to play Streep's nephew in the film version of award-winning stage play 'August: Osage County'

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is in talks to join the Hollywood adaptation of award-winning stage plage August: Osage County.

The high-profile movie has a cast that already includes Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis, Abigail Breslin and Dermot Mulroney. It will be directed by John Wells, best known for his work on ER and the US remake of Shameless and counts George Clooney among its producers.

The original play by Tracy Letts, which ran on Broadway and at London's National Theatre in 2008, follows a dysfunctional family who are brought back to their childhood home by a crisis. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cumberbatch is being lined up to play the nephew of Streep's character, a "sensitive" soul who finds out that the identity of his real father had been hidden from him. Filming will begin in Oklahoma next month (2012).

Cumberbatch, 36, is best known as the star of BBC1's Sherlock, a role which recently earned him an Emmy nomination. His big screen CV includes War Horse and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and he is set to play the villain in the currently untitled Star Trek sequel.

Last month (July), Cumberbatch revealed that he will make a cameo appearance in the next series of The Simpsons, which is scheduled to return to US screens next month (September). His next UK TV appearance will come in Parade's End, a World War One miniseries which begins on BBC2 at 9pm tonight (August 24).

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Film-makers for the movie “August: Osage County” to begin filming next week in northeastern Oklahoma are seeking for more sets of wheels to put on their movie reels.

Casting directors for the movie starring Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts are asking for sedans and pickup trucks from the year 2000 or older.

The John Wells-directed movie, based on an award-winning play by Tulsa-writer Tracy Letts, is a story about the dysfunctional Weston family which comes together when their alcoholic patriarch goes missing.

According to the Freihofer Casting, on the list of acceptable vehicles are pickup trucks with or without camper shells, two or four-door cars, station wagons and older SUVs. Convertibles and muscle cars are not needed — nor are bright red or white vehicles.

The casting company said the majority of the vehicle needs will be on one weekday in the period between Sept. 24 and Oct. 5.

How important was the Oklahoma Film Enhancement Rebate in attracting "August: Osage County" to shoot in Oklahoma?

Important to the extent of more than $5 million going back to the production in the form of tax rebates. According to Jill Simpson, director of the Oklahoma Film & Music Office, the state offers up to 37 percent on Oklahoma expenditures to qualifying companies filming in the state, with the rebate capped at $5 million per year.

The Weinstein Co. picture - which is being produced by George Clooney's production company, among others - is anticipating spending $14.9 million in Oklahoma during filming, Simpson said. A production company official recently noted that they have rented more than 30 homes in the area for cast and some crew to live in during filming, along with an anticipated 5,000 hotel-room nights.

That $14.9 million expenditure means an anticipated payout of roughly $5.5 million spanning two fiscal years, Simpson said, due to the $5 million per-year cap on the program.

"The program has a rolling cap allowing for funds to come from two fiscal years pursuant to the availability of rebate funds," she said.

How important was filming the picture in its place of origin?

A production of this type always shops around to find the best fit, and Oklahoma was in the mix from the beginning, along with Louisiana, Georgia and the state of New York, according to Celia Costas, an executive producer who spoke during a presentation to the city council in Bartlesville.

"It wasn't until I flew over Osage County and saw it that I said, 'You know, there is a reason we are in this place,' " Costas told the crowd. Location, the tax rebate, finding the right house for filming - it all added up to shooting in Osage County.

When does the filming of "August: Osage County" begin?

There has already been incidental filming of roads and exteriors, and such "pickup" shots will continue after the actors leave. But principal photography with part of the cast begins on Monday in Bartlesville, with shooting scheduled to last eight weeks.

Where will the filming take place?

Probably about 80 percent of the movie will be shot inside the Boulanger house, which is a three-story structure in far northern Osage County, said Wendi Laski, the unit publicist for the film. The production company bought the residence near the former townsite of Boulanger. Like the house in Tulsa-native Tracy Letts' play, it has two main floors topped by a large attic considered to be a third floor.

The remainder of shooting will take place in the outdoors in Pawhuska (downtown, at an area lake and at the county fairgrounds), Bartlesville and Barnsdall.

Where did the title of "August: Osage County" originate?

The answer can be found in Letts' dedication at the beginning of his play's script.

"I could never come up with a title as brilliant as 'August: Osage County.' Mr. Howard Starks, gentleman, teacher, poet, genius, mentor, friend, created that title for an extraordinary poem that is one of the inspirations for my play. I steal the title with deference, yet without apology - Howard, I'm sure, would have it no other way - and I dedicate this play to his memory."

Starks, who died in 2003, taught at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, where Letts graduated from high school. Starks taught with and was close friends with Dennis Letts, the playwright's father.

The setting for the play "August: Osage County" is Pawhuska, the county seat of Osage County, in August 2007.

How many extras are going to be used in filming the movie?

"Maybe a couple of hundred," Laski said. She could not elaborate on what will be asked of those who are selected from among the more than 6,000 people who lined up at a pair of "calls for extras" at Tulsa Promenade and later in Bartlesville, all seeking their shot at a small amount of fame.

What awards did the play win?

"August: Osage County" won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in 2008 after it won five Tony Awards: best play (which went to Letts as the playwright); best actress in a leading role (Deanna Dunagan as Violet Weston); best actress in a featured role (Rondi Reed as Mattie Fae Aiken, Violet's sister); best direction (Anna D. Shapiro); and best scenic design of a play.

"August: Osage County" moves next week from the pre-production stage to the actual filming of actors and dialogue in northeastern Oklahoma. Tracy Letts' play, one of the most decorated dramas in the history of the American stage, has attracted a cast full of award-winners and nominees.

The question of star power at the time of filming goes to "August: Osage County" for its established stars; "The Outsiders" cast was one that drove the young women wild, but the actors' biggest hits were ahead of them.

In that regard, "August: Osage County" gets the edge as to prestige (all those awards), though "The Outsiders" in hindsight is a cast with all those box-office smashes: "E.T.," "The Karate Kid," "Dirty Dancing," "Top Gun" and "The Breakfast Club" were all 1980s decade-defining hits.

A Bartlesville eatery played host on Wednesday night to George Clooney, one of the producers of "August: Osage County," the star-studded movie about to begin filming in the Pawhuska and Bartlesville areas.

It was Frank & Lola's Neighborhood Restaurant & Bar, often noted as one of the best places to dine in the city. At least that's what one of our Facebook friends told us who also ate there Wednesday.

I'll be surprised if many out there don't hear similar stories from friends in the near future, now that the cast and producers are joining crew members who have already been working in the Osage County and Washington County areas in recent weeks.

Did George have the green chili? Or the cheeseburger? Or perhaps one of the green chili cheeseburgers that induce raves at Frank & Lola's?

Is George a good tipper, of the 20 percent variety, or something less or more?

These details are unknown, but I'm told that "people want to know these kinds of things." So there you have what is known.

Hollywood film brings big bucks to Bartlesville

It was lights, camera action Monday in Bartlesville, as filming began on the Hollywood movie "August: Osage County."

The big-budget film features stars including George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Marryl Streep.

But before it even makes it to the silver screen, it was already proving to be a hit in Bartlesville.

Filming is scheduled to continue into late November. During the two-month filming period the Oklahoma Film Commission estimated the movie would bring a $37 million economic impact to the state.

Two years ago Bartlesville got its Hollywood debut when another film crew came to town. That movie brought about $15 million in economic impact, and it was a small-budget film.

"August: Osage County" came to Bartlesville with a lot more money to spend.

"They're using vendors, anything you can think of from printers to maybe an IT guy, to construction, carpentry, those kind of things," Maria Gus, Executive Director of the Bartlesville Convention & Visitors Bureau, said.

Housing the cast and crew is a big part of the movie income. More than 5,000 hotel room nights were booked in Bartlesville during the filming, at an estimated cost of $750,000. Others decided to rent homes to stay in during the filming. More than 30 homes were rented, at an estimated cost of $60,000.

Everyone working on the movie has to eat, too, which is keeping local restaurants busy.

"We've been a lot busier than normal," Susan Miller, owner of The Rolling Pin Bakery and Deli, said. "We fix box lunches for them that they'll call in and order."

Miller said her bakery isn't the only restaurant rolling in the dough these days.

"I think they're all feeling a little bit more busy than usual," She said.

The presence of the movie stars has also brought star gazers from across the region, hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the actors. The extra visitors are also packing in restaurants.

"People do come in and they want to know if we've spotted any stars."

Miller said she's just happy to have the boost in business.

"You have to make sure that you're taking care of your regulars, because they'll be here after everybody's gone," she said. "But, you just pick up the pace, you hire a little more help if you need to, you put in a few more hours."

After all, she said, the payout is worth it.

"In the long run, might make a better vacation."

Other home and business owners have made money off the film as well. Some have even been paid to keep their lawn green. However, most were asked to sign non-disclosure agreements and couldn't share any details of their dealings with the film crew.

Gus said a second movie being filmed in Bartlesville in just two years means the entire area will likely continue to feel the impact long after the stars are gone.

"We've had an increase in followers on Facebook and Twitter," she said. "So, they're learning more about what makes us a great community."

The Oklahoma Film Commission provides big rebates as incentives for producers to film movies in Oklahoma. "August: Osage County" will get back a little more than $5 million, but it's estimated that the state will still come out ahead by more than $32 million.

PAWHUSKA, Oklahoma - Filming was scheduled to begin Monday on the latest movie being shot in Osage County. The feature length film is based on a play written by Tulsa native Tracy Letts.
News On 6 went on location in Pawhuska and the community of Boulanger, near the Kansas state line.

The movie, called August: Osage County, centers on the Weston family who gather after a death in the family. Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Abigail Breslin, Juliette Lewis, Ewan McGregor, and Benedict Cumberbatch have all been cast in the movie.

George Clooney is a producer on the film.

Most of the film will take place inside a home in Boulanger, in rural Osage County. The home was built around 1910 and was actually a mail order home from Sears-Roebuck.

"Shipped in by train is the story I heard from my uncles," said Mitch Boulanger.

Mitch Boulanger is the grandson of Walter Boulanger, the man who built the home and founded the community.

"My father, who is not with us anymore, would just be tickled pink that they're doing this in the home," Boulanger said."It is a marvelous home, and maybe it'll be a historical sight someday soon."



We weren't allowed to get very close so it was hard to tell if there was in filming taking place, but we could see lots of work being done outside the home.

The rest of the filming will be in the city of Pawhuska. The famed triangle area is reported to be a bus stop in the movie, and we're told crews will be shooting at the famous Bad Brad's Bar-B-Q later this week.

Residents here says it's been fun having the production crew in town checking out the city or even stopping in for a bite to eat.

"Maybe this is the new California," said Pawhuska resident Taryn Crawford.

Taryn Crawford has lived in Pawhuska all of her life. She's thrilled that her hometown will soon be the focus of moviegoers across the world.

"Maybe they'll want to come back and see Pawhuska. That's good, that's what we need," she said.

Marlene Mosley is also enjoying the moment. Her hot dog restaurant has stayed quite busy with special orders for the production crew.

"I never in a million years thought that I would be serving people that have such an impact on America in the movies," said business owner Marlene Mosley.

It all starts in a century-old home, built by a pioneer now linked to the silver screen.

"It's pretty nice to know that my grandfather is getting recognition after all this time," said Mitch Boulanger. "Sixty-plus years later he's finally getting recognition for what they say is the first Osage Indians to found a town."

Filming is scheduled to take place here in Pawhuska and Osage County, as well as Washington County over the next eight weeks.

Sharon Webster and her daughter Brittany scored photos with Clooney outside the hospital.

"He is a very nice man," she said. "Would stop and talk to you too."

Movie crews will be in Oklahoma for the next eight weeks shooting the film based on a play by Tulsa native Tracy Letts. The plot revolves around the Westons, who gather after a death in the family.

As "August: Osage County" begins filming in northeastern Oklahoma, people are experiencing their "brush with fame" occasionally, and George Clooney is proving to be quite the man about town.

Clooney is the producer of the film, and he was on the set Monday at Jane Phillips Hospital in Bartlesville where unknown scenes were being filmed, with unknown actors.

But now we know that Clooney was in the building, as well as outside of the building, which is where these photos were taken.

Some of the locals noticed Clooney, asked if he would be willing to pose for a photo with them, and he obliged. Very classy for a man who was probably in the middle of a 16-hour shooting day.

Bailey and Brady Roper met Clooney in Bartlesville, and so did Sharon Webster and her daughter, Brittany, outside of Jane Phillips Hospital.

"My daughter and I were at the Jane Phillips Hospital when George Clooney walked by and we asked him if he minded taking a picture with us and he said sure, he was very nice," Webster said in an email.

"I asked how about all 3 of us and he said ok so I tried to work
the camera phone to take all 3 of us and he said laughingly your gonna screw it up. ha ha ya it didnt work and I was so (giddy) I coldnt take anymore. I am so excited!"

Check out those photos....doesn't everyone look excited? By the way, Clooney spent a good part of his youth in Cincinnati -- he even tried out for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team -- so that explains the Cincinnati Bengals T-shirt.

They are apparently filming in Ochelata today. One lady says she met George but I haven't seen a pic. Then there is another pic of someone in the cast taking a picture with two young children.

George is always so nice to his fans .

This picture was taken outside the Tulsa Cancer Institute office in Bartlesville. He really does take time for people. This is the George I like to hear about.
