Wow how romantic throwing rocks. We knew she was around for The American and she was around the set. Maybe this is another time they threw stones she looks so into it! If she was around with Ides we would have seen pictures, it is Georges hometown and he was visable. Not a single tweet of them out to dinner or at any of the hotels she isn't that invisible. All there is is that one fuzzy shot of them out to dinner with the folks! Gosh the set must have been really boring not too sure how thrilled I would be if my new boyfriend would rather throw rocks then have a conversation with me!

I don't think they were throwing rocks, it looked like a game of petanque (boules).

With regards to IoM filming, we didn't see any pictures of George in the hotel or out in the evenings either, even though he must have eaten and slept somewhere for the whole of the filming.

The movie was the worst I have ever seen in several years by any actor.
Even George was not enthusiastic about it but I heard that he did it because it was entirely shot in the Abruzzi region of Italy and wanted to help financially the people there who lost everything in the earthquake of a couple of years ago (??).

The movie is a complete remake of The Day of the Jackal, same scenes, hardly any speaking parts, long silences, all the time taken in building a gun, take it apart to fit a briefcase, etc. etc. etc.

The character of the priest and his son who has the garage where George's character buys the equipment to make his gun had absolutely no connection to the story, nothing, Nada, Niente!!

On a scale 1 to 10 I would give 0.75.

At least George looked really great in this film, maybe even to good:
When my friend was in the cinema to watch the film, there was a couple sitting behind her. The woman was admiring George, Give hearts which made her husband (?) comletely angry, during the whole film he kept complainig about his wife: If she kept behaving like that, he would never ever take her to a George Clooney Film again Botheration!
and my friend was completely pissed off, because she wanted to admire George, too and was soooo disturbed by this guy.
Afterwards she just said: Ladies, leave your men at home when going to see a film with George, even better, men should be completely bannned from his films so that they cannot ruin the fun for us girls!

I liked the American even though I believe that in promoting the film
has been made a mistake, the American is not a thriller but a film
of introspection on the nostalgia towards life, of a killer.
George is very good to represent the loneliness, sadness and
melancholy of the killer

I agree with lelacorb, felt the same about the film, sex scenes, well it's always nice to see George with less clothing but for me the story was about the life of a burnt out killer.

Cindi, when the movie came out we have a film program that reviews films, and this was on it so I have it on dvd. I just love the bit in the 3rd section timed @ 4.07 where Gee is "framing up" winks and smiles at the camera. That bit has been replayed n replayed........!!! Thanks very much, at least now I don't have to lugg my dvd player around with me!!!! cheers

I love the part in the vid where he watches the "stunt girl" fall off the roof and he's really concerned about her, and he asked "is she OK?" Then "bravo, bravo." That's the real George.

I watched The American today. I have had the DVD for months, but I just haven't watched it. The film was very different than I expected. George had very sad look in his eyes all through the movie. I still don't know weather I liked the film or not. And dammit George killed two finnish actors.... Crying or Very sad

You're right fluffy, he's very thin and I heard he's small-boned with fine features but still very good looking in person. I always heard that the camera puts at least 10 pounds on a body so maybe because is an actor he has to be thin like that. JMO

Thank you for the video lolo! Very absorbing. I just received the DVD and am really looking forward to seeing this film. I skipped it at the theatre because friends said it was boring. In retrospect said friends are young and obsessed with action films, so I suppose it goes without saying this might not be their cup of tea. The reviews I've read have been mostly positive; with an absolutely glowing write-up by Roger Ebert. Thumbs up!

That's why I think he was totally acting in this film. He wasn't being George like so many say he is in every single film he does (just a variation of himself). The lack of emotion is what made me like this film. That and "the scene"!!!! in bed

Re: POLL: The American

Post by Astras Yesterday at 1:59

I've now watched this movie 3 times and could easily see it again. I didn't expect to love it as much as I did, but it's become a real favorite of mine. Maybe it's because I grew up in the 70s; and many of the films shown at my tiny little twin cinema featured Clint Eastwood's Spaghetti Westerns and other 70's style films featuring the quiet loner with a secret who rolls into a strange town - and you just know something isn't right. Whatever the reason, whenever I see a film that reminds of my early cinema experiences, it tends to go on my list of favorites.

The story is a simple one - a hit man on what we figure is his last job; but as usual in stories such as this, it's never quite that easy to walk away from from your past. And of course there is always a woman to illuminate that our hero isn't entirely the cold, calculating killer we imagine him to be. He's weary. He wants out. He's looking to free his soul, so to speak. Thus the butterfly.

I enjoyed the spareness of dialogue and the slower pace of the film. The lack of action served to heighten the tension - the sense of dread; that something is about to happen...but what? I thought George was mesmerizing. It really struck me how good he really is. Sometimes we forget because he's so attractive and so good natured - that he's become one of our greatest film actors. His physicality in "The American" is sinewy and tense; allowing us to believe that he could literally spring into action the split second it might be required. His existence is sparse and lonely.

Ah yes, the love scene. Wow. That was...um yeah. I thought the scene was fantastic in the way it showed the transformation of their relationship from hooker/client to actual lovers - the camera focusing her reactions nearly the entire time. So how many of us have re-watched it again and again? And again. Fess up ladies. Laughing

Anyway, I absolutely loved this film and think it's some of George's best work. It's too bad more people didn't appreciate how well done this movie is. As I recall, it was marketed as more of an action flick and of course it's not; so I can see where people expecting as much were disappointed. I guess I'm a sucker for 70s style cinema, so this film was a joy for me in that aspect.

I don't know how explicit we are able to be with photos on this forum, but here are a few of the less graphic images I enjoyed:

The American film is a very introspective and in some scenes has given me very strong emotions that hardly gives me a movie in general. I think this film is discussed again, wonderful interpretation of the loneliness of George in his life, perhaps also because he feels lonely. One of the best films of George!

Thanks Astras for your opinion on the film, which I enjoyed very much too. It reminded me in atmosphere of The Third Man immediately after I'd watched it.

One of the reason that I like George's work is his ability to make films like this, with no regard to continuing his image created in such films as Out of Sight or the Ocean's films.
Thanks for those wonderful pictures too, more effective in
black & white I think.
I don't believe it's a reflection of George's life at all, more a shining example of his versatility as an actor and his ability to really
get into a role.
Now...I've got to watch it again soon,
thanks to your posting ! flower
