Re Seth's comment on "what are you watching thread" today
about watching The American later today....
Enjoy The American then Seth today.
I liked the film and the ambience it created.
It reminded me a little of The Third Man the first time I watched it.
IMO George's performance is brilliant.

Re: POLL: The American
Aaaa, thanks so much for sharing that. Shame they cut that scene because it makes more sense of their relationship.
As it was, the film didn't quite work for me because the relationship between them didn't really seem to exist. All they did was have dinner once but otherwise it was just client/prostitute sex and I found it hard to believe they'd fallen for each other.

At this link there are FIVE videos of "Behind the Scenes on
The American"
In the second, there's a section where George looks frozen cold !
I haven't posted the actual videos in case there are
copyright issues.

Re: POLL: The American
I saw this film about a month or so ago. I know many people who have seen it and thought it was unbearably slow. I however, loved it! I feel like I was able to really take in the emotion behind his character and what he goes through with his life. I found it suspenseful and sensual and emotional. And not even sensual in the obvious ways. Sensual in the fact that, for some reason, seeing him with that big gun is remarkably sexy. I think it is a brilliant film that often doesn't get the chance it deserves.

Re: POLL: The American
At the time it was this movie was released, a few critics mentioned it would be different, challenging role for GC, especially as there is very little dialogue. I loved that best about the film, increased the intensity, one of my definite favourites. I think I liked GC in it as I do so like a man who looks like he can take care of business!!

Yes. The slow build up! It definitely lets you see how well it was done. No words or anything in a lot of it. Just the acting and portrayal of the character. Beautiful!

Re: POLL: The American
I have to agree it is one of my favorites. There is nothing like the strong silent type. I does say volumns with those eyes.
I found this one in WalMart for $5.00. They are getting a lot of $5 movies in the store. I buy them but this is like buying books for a buck or two, you kind of feel bad for all that went into it to be so cheap. But I guess that is part of the plan?

Re: POLL: The American
Mazy, don't feel bad for only paying $5 for it. They made their money back, and they keep getting residuals for every time it's shown on TV or another DVD is sold. This is from IMDb, but I don't think it reflects all DVD sales and residuals. I think it's just box office sales.

Wow - I don't often look to see what each movie makes. I had assumed that the American was not that well received, but tripling your money is not a bad investment.

I sort of thought The American was not that well received either ( I loved it however!) While I can not prove it's accuracy because I don't know how, I did hear that Oceans 11 was Steven Soderbergh's most profitable film of his career!

Re: POLL: The American
I don't know about Ocean's 13 making more than Ocean's 11 profit wise. Ocean's 13 they are not listing the production budget but it made 311 mill worldwide, and Oceans 11 made 450 million worldwide with an 85 mill production budget. I know they do funky accounting but that one's hard to do.
George is generally a good bet for film profits mainly because his films aren't that expensive to produce. So they don't fail big either. One of his big production budgets though was The Perfect Storm and that earned his second largest gross at 328 million. Not bad.
I sort of liked the American, seemed a bit slow to me though.

it has its own mood
you need to enter in it

Re: POLL: The American
Yeah I would say give The American another shot. Now that you know what you are walking into. It is a slow suspense. I kind of like the mind game of being so slow. Then that is just me too. The one I am taking another stab at soon is Syriana. I REALLY wanted to like it but I gave up like 2/3 of the way through because I was lost and not into it. I will try again though!
