Brad Pitt

Arguments for: -Moneyball, Tree of Life, commercially and critically it’s been a really, really strong year, and now they’re talking Oscar nomination. Who’s better at campaigning than the Brange? -Look at his hustle for Moneyball. He’s been working it harder than he has in a long, long time. This is a sign for him: Brad can taste something, and is willing to bend a lot deeper for it in exchange. Full Story

Robert Pattinson

Arguments for: -It’s Twilight Week. It’s perfectly timed. You give it to him, the Twi-Hards jizz all over the newsstands, instant major cash. Pattinson is almost an automatic. It’s the “of course” selection. He’s made the final 3. I would not be surprised. But if I were safeguarding this brand. Full Story

Leonardo DiCaprio

Arguments for:-Oh he’ll hide under his smelly baseball cap and tell you he’s not interested in an Oscar but of course he’s interested in an Oscar. That’s the whole point of the game. And right now, with J Edgar, there’s a good chance at a nomination. Doesn’t hurt if he goes into the race winning the SMA popularity contest-Leonardo DiCaprio became the Heartthrob who became the Actor. Full Story

Jon Hamm

Arguments for:-Oh My God, please just give it to him-He’s funny, he’s versatile, he’s not overly precious, he’s so humble, and sweet-Devoted to his lady-Very American-People miss Mad Men/Don Draper-The average age of all past SMAs is 39. Jon Hamm is 40. Arguments against:-He’s a tv star, he’s not a Movie Star. Full Story

Arguments for:-What a year. He was everywhere this year. -He goes to Disneyland, the aquarium, he breaks up fights.-That time he took his shirt off in Crazy, Stupid, Love-Major talent, super respected among his peers, handpicked by George Clooney, a big, BIG futureArguments against:-None of his movies are ever major SMASH hits. Arguments for:-Sherlock at Christmas, Iron Man in The Avengers in May, he’s running the box office, he’s never been more popular-All that’s in the past now, right? He is the ultimate Comeback -Happily married, wife expecting baby, it’s the MiniVan’s favourite subject: babies!-Best personality ever-Women adore him and men want to hang out with him Arguments against:-People hold grudges for a long ass time -Mel Gibson-Doesn’t kiss enough MiniVan ass. George Clooney

Arguments for:
-On the campaign trail, HARD. Is riding this year on two features, The Ides of March and The Descendents which is quickly, quickly picking up a lot of momentum.
-No denying how bad he wants this. See Stacy Keibler.
-No one has ever been named SMA three times. He’d never admit it but please...he’d LOVE that honour

Arguments against:
-Has the MiniVan forgiven him for Elisabetta Canalis?
-Has the MiniVan forgiven him for not getting married and having babies?
-Is Stacy Keibler helping or hurting? I think you split the MiniVan vote on that, and therefore, he’s not the sure thing he used to be
-George’s political mouth may not be so popular anymore with a certain segment of the PEOPLE audience.
-Does he look good? Harrison Ford was named SMA when he was 56 and he looked hot. George is 50 and my man, he seems TIRED.

Odds: 14 to 1

Prince William

Arguments for:-He’s a real life Prince. Like, if you were to draw a Prince without ever having seen a Prince, you’d come up with him. -He’s the son of the beloved Diana, now a full blown married adult man: we watched him grow up, there’s a sentimentality factor here.-His big ass wedding was really popular. Full Story

Bradley Cooper

Arguments for:-It’s been a good year professionally. Limitless did well. The Hangover 2 did very well. -He’s American -He’s now single having (strategically) split from Renee Zellweger who wouldn’t have been very popular with the MiniVan Majority as a girlfriend-JLo was dealing with him for about 5 minutes-He would want it. Hugh Jackman

Arguments for:-Reel Steel was a surprise (modest) success. And he’s now back on Broadway, winning favour with fans and critics. -Look at him-He’s accessible, he’s the nicest person ever, he’s awesome with his kids, he’s happy, always, whenever we see him, he’s lovely to his wife, who doesn’t love him??? Arguments against:-He’s already been the SMA. Full Story

Daniel Craig
November 15, 2011
Posted at 8:19 AM
Posted by Lainey
Arguments for:-He’s all over the movies this season with two major releases (TinTin, Dragon Tattoo Girl) and it certainly makes sense from a marketing push -After the underwhelming performances of Cowboys & Aliens and Dream House, he might need a little popoularity juice-Daniel Craig is old school sex appeal: this is a man for men and for womenArguments against:-It’s a year too early. Full Story

Colin Firth

Arguments for: -Let’s not waste time on the physical obvious. You’ve seen him in a tuxedo?-Really it should have been last year but now he’s the reigning Best Actor and this year, during award season, he’s in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and even though Gary Oldman’s getting most of the play for the film, it’s yet another prestige project Firth is involved with. Full Story

Neil Patrick Harris

Arguments for:-Wouldn’t it be great??? The first openly gay Sexiest Man Alive? The year that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is repealed? -NPH is riding a career high: multiple award nominations, accolades hosting award shows, popularity across demographics.-NPH is riding a personal high: he’s a new dad, and they’re twins!-And he’s just so nice, and appreciative, and deserving, and lovely, and wonderful -The MiniVan Majority they love him, they want to go for martinis and manicures with him, they’re not threatened by him, they’re SJP to his NPH. Full Story

Gerard Butler

Arguments for: -Personally I can’t think of any-If I had to stretch, I’d say that some people think he did a good job in Coriolanus and it’s making an Oscar run so the studio might be pushing for it-Some horny ladies are into this Scottish mess. Specifically, his rabid fan club which is mobilising to get him some kind of nomination. Full Story

Chris Evans

Arguments for: -The success of Captain America secured him his very own superhero franchise. With Avengers coming in 6 months, it’s a good way to build momentum. He’d certainly have his studio backing it. And, unlike Ryan Reynolds, his film was actually good; he established that before taking the title. Full Story

Will Smith
November 15, 2011

Arguments for: -To date there has ever only been ONE non-white Sexiest Man Alive and that’s Denzel Washington. At some point, this title WILL belong to Will Smith. -Will and Jada had to fight off a divorce rumour a few months ago. Some people still don’t believe they’re solid. For many, their split speculation only reaffirmed their assumption that he’s gay. Full Story

Lainey gets a bit irritating with the mini van majority thing. I do understand what she is trying to convey, but running it into the ground kind of kills the effect. Maybe its self loathing....we hate the things we won't admit about ourselves. Shocked

LOL Yep that was funny. I hope not Robert P. I just don't get it or his nearly always sulky girlfriend. I must admit I do have a soft spot for Ryan! He is cute and goes to the beat of his own drum which I like. Neil Patrick Harris would be great he is so funny and it would make a change having a gay SMA. People do love George so you never know.

Not sure really where to post this, so adding it to the Lainey thread:

From Lainey

George Clooney is in New York today to tape his appearance on Inside The Actors Studio and to attend the NBR gala tomorrow night. Stacy Keibler has accompanied him on the trip. We’ll come back to this.

But after all this time, Lipton has finally landed George Clooney. A very big get. And why now? You know the answer. Clooney has a Supporting Actor Oscar. He wants the big lead. He thinks this year is his best chance. This is a balls out campaign. Clooney on Inside The Actors Studio airs January 31st. (Brad Pitt turned down James Lipton’s request to go Inside The Actors Studio in 2004 because he didn’t feel his work was good enough then. Jennifer Aniston accepted the invitation last year.)

Before heading to New York, Clooney was in Palm Springs on Saturday night to receive the festival’s Chairman’s Award in front of an audience that included his competition: Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman, and Jean Dujardin. That’s the Best Actor race right there.

I want you to look at the first photo I’ve posted. Of Clooney stopping to sign autographs for that excited, mature lady. I spent the day in Palm Springs. There are a lot of Academy voters and influencers who live in Palm Springs. They look a lot like that lady. That’s exactly who he does it for. So every time you groan at his sh-t and wonder if it’s working? Remember her face. It’s working for her.

As for Clooney and Keibler - they worked the entire press line together, stopping at every outlet. It took a while. And still he did it. Because, as mentioned in the intro today, Oscar ballots haven’t closed yet. Palm Springs is a hustle. You’ll recall though, just 4 short months ago at TIFF, Stacy had to walk herself to his premieres, and the two did not pose together on the carpets. We’re 6 weeks from Oscar now and suddenly she gets to use the front door at the same time he does, AFTER sharing camera time...? It’s been a steady and deliberate upgrade.

My interview was mostly directed at him. I’m not going to lie - I probably should have, like all the other big name US outlets, made the conversation about both of them so, I dunno, the story could be about their “date night”. But in that moment, I just didn’t know how to direct a question over to her without feeling really, really awkward. Hey Stacy, what do you think of George getting the Chairman’s Award tonight, are you proud of him?

I couldn’t do it. I just... didn’t care enough. Instead I asked him about his rivalry with Brad Pitt and he gave me a hilarious answer about how he totally didn’t mean it in Entertainment Weekly when he said he wanted Brad to win and then I made him laugh when I asked him about whether he orders the chicken or the steak at these award show galas and after that we talked about Einstein, his dog, and all the while, Stacy, who is actually quite sweet, stayed silent, just smiling, encouragingly actually, content to listen and be the attractive escort, not needing to insert herself into the discussion for the sake of being heard. That’s when I realised why she’s so much more successful than the former Italian Queen Elisabetta Canalis.

Keibler (who was too heavily made up) is patient. She doesn’t push for the prize. She’s content to take what’s given to her in the moment. She’s drama-free without being totally useless (Sarah Larson). And, from what I observed through the night, people like her. She doesn’t coast on being Clooney’s girlfriend and expect people to serve her or engage her. She talks to people, he can leave her alone and she’ll be ok, and he doesn’t have to be afraid to come back to the table to find a pouty face staring back at him. Whatever Stacy Keibler is for him, in those circles at least, she’s not a liability. At least not right now.

Well that reminds me of the interview on another thread, the one that couldn't be heard, good for Lainey, liked her questions to George, and his answers seemed new. Her opinion of SK was fair, IMO.

Usually Lainey says she is the one etc not this time with Stacy. It seems more double sided one hand she compliments on the next she doesn't. It sounds like even Lainey doesn't think Stacy will be around for the long haul. Once again George charmed her and I'm sure his new Einstein stories are going down well I said for sometime George needed a new pet. I expect we will be hearing some funny Einstein stories although it will be hard to beat the ones about the bulldogs they were funny! Lainey may even talk more in her next column but George seems to be on her good side again.

10 January 2012

Awards Season with Brad and George

Both were in New York last night, both campaigning before the Academy’s nomination window closes later this week. The Brange attended the New York Film Critics’ Circle gala to collect his Best Actor award, George will attend the NBR gala tonight for his Best Actor prize from that organisation, they’ll go head to head on Thursday night at the Critics’ Choice Awards back in Hollywood and again on Sunday at the Globes.

In other words, they’re pretty much together every other day this week. And I like it when they’re together.

But who’s in the lead?

George may have a slight edge though Brad’s picking up some momentum. The National Society of Film Critics just named him Best Actor ahead of Gary Oldman and Jean Dujardin. Sony is playing this very, very carefully for him, working steadily behind the scenes leading up to Friday’s cut-off to make sure his name gets on the list of final five. Still...across the board, every race is tight, no one is a lock. Not even Steven Spielberg.

Spielberg was shut out from the Directors Guild yesterday.

Spielberg!

In favour of David Fincher and Woody Allen. (Which means Midnight in Paris - a movie that’s probably my favourite among all the ones being talked about as contenders - still has a good chance.)

What I’m saying is that this year, more than any other, they need to hustle their asses.

Which is why George has been doing so many interviews, appearances, magazine covers. George has been EVERYWHERE. Yesterday it was Rock Centre with Brian Williams and at some point GMA. Look at them fangirl over him on GMA:

“I am working on one now that...could end him as we know it.”

See?

Don’t you want Brad and George to be together, like, all the time, with a camera on? I would watch that show! Because, of course, they don’t have to make that show.

Anyway, George alludes to a flight they were on together a couple of days ago, did you hear that? I’m thinking it was either to or from Palm Springs, they shared a ride. And that would mean all four of them, the Jolie and Keibler, getting to know one another. They’ll have to, very well in fact, because according to the schedule they should be seeing each other at least once a week until Oscar time.

Speaking of Keibler, click here to see a photo of her in New York with Joanna Cole, editor of Marie Claire, yesterday. As IF Stacy Keibler would make it into Marie Claire if not for George Clooney.

While Stacy was enjoying the benefits of being his girlfriend, George was glad-handing around town. As for Brange - I’m into Angelina’s leather skirt and emeralds, it’s a good combination. Very rarely does she look better than he does but it was the case the other night in Palm Springs and it was the same last night in New York...because, again, as I noted then, he’s so thin right now his clothes don’t fit right. Now how can we find a way to blame her for this, tabloids?

I do like George and Brad together they always muck around. Can't imagine all four of them together....wow and Lainey likes Stacy? Not so sure about the back handed compliments she gives her. George sure is running his non campaign well everyone has picked up on it. Makes a good change from last time around when he decided to do nothing I guess he worked out pretty quickly that way doesn't work. He needs to be seen or you get forgotten.
