Yes true all the art was found in a flat in Munich the man was over 80 years old. The art was already found over a year ago but was held a secret and now it came out in puplic. Below you find the artical. It is even mention that this guy get maybe all the art back. I really hope not. Read below (google translation)

Giant art treasure in Munich: between Picasso and cans

Rotting food piles up on home-made furniture , in between are paintings by artists such as Picasso, Chagall, Nolde and Spitzweg - works with millions of Value: The circumstances in which investigators have raised according to a report by the magazine " Focus" in a musty Munich apartment is an art treasure lines read like a detective novel . And it seems like this story has just begun.

The suspect : a now 80 - year-old man According to " Focus" customs officials checked him on a train to Switzerland in 2010, and took 9000 euro cash in his pocket. Although this amount had not registered and not the man was guilty , the police shadowed him in the aftermath of the incident. "Without concrete suspicion ," it says in the magazine . Nevertheless, the court granted in spring 2011 investigators permission to search the apartment of the man.
The discovery : How the " Focus" reports , piled up in the Munich apartment plate of food residues , food cans and food packages , partly with a shelf life, dating back to the last millennium. Almost all the windows were locked. Between supposedly : masterpieces million values. Paintings, drawings, etchings by Pablo Picasso, Nolde , Carl Spitzweg, Henri Matisse. A mixture of the Louvre and Messi - habitation. The article speaks of a total of 1500 exhibits.

The background : before the Second World War, The Man , the Magazine 's father was a well-known art dealer. After the takeover of power by the Nazis he was first banished from his post as director of the Hamburg Museum - apparently because of his Jewish ancestors . However, because he used excellent contacts in the art world , he was charged with confiscated works from the exhibition "Degenerate Art" to sell - of all those collections for which the Nazis had gathered thousands of plants , and in particular many Jewish traders to were forced to leave their most valuable treasures laughable prices. According to " focus" of at least 300 in Munich emerged images are assigned to the " degenerate art " . The father of the suspect remained apparently untouched by the war. He had also given his entire ownership of images is at the bombing of Dresden on 13 February 1945 burned in his apartment . In 1956, he was killed in a traffic accident.

Who owns the millions ?

In fact, the art collector had left his son obviously a huge treasure . This had it operated for decades, and an unknown number of paintings sold in Germany and Switzerland .

Since the raid in the spring of 2011, the huge collection is according to "Focus" now in Garching customs office under lock and key . An art historian confirmed SPIEGEL ONLINE that it is entrusted with evaluating the images for eighteen years.

Although the 80 -year-old currently has no access to the art, it is possible , according to the magazine report that he gets back again Picasso , Nolde and Chagall : namely, when the origin of the images can not be determined. Even with the exhibits that can be assigned to the " degenerate art " , the legal position is uncertain . Against the man was currently determined only on suspicion of tax evasion.

One way the authorities still remain , according to the report: The former lie of the dubious art dealer widow are therefore hope.

Convicted of lying

They have also stated in the sixties to authorities that all art treasures her husband had been destroyed in the fire of eight Dresden. Specifically, it was questioned as to the whereabouts of some images from the former property of the Jewish collector Henri Hinrichsen , it was also a painting by Carl Spitzweg . Just that picture and other documents in this regard had appeared in the Munich apartment trashed .
With the evidence of the false statement , a method could be brought to forfeit ownership of the 80 -year-olds in the artworks . If successful, the authorities would then detail the treasures , go over to the state, to the federal Minister of Finance.

Not only the question of the future of high art treasure is still open : whether the senior has even more hidden images , is also unclear. And why were the authorities in the event a secret? Answer that could give the public prosecutor Augsburg. But there is silence . A spokesman for the authority told SPIEGEL ONLINE , in view of ongoing procedures to certain cases he could give no information. And so the speaker will , nor expected " a long time" remain so.

Nazi looted art 'found in Munich' - German media

A collection of 1,500 artworks confiscated by the Nazis in the 1930s and 1940s has been found in the German city of Munich, media reports say.

The trove is believed to include works by Matisse, Picasso and Chagall, the news magazine Focus reports.

Some of the works were declared as degenerate by the Nazis, while others were stolen from or forcibly sold for a pittance by Jewish art collectors.

If confirmed, it would be one of the largest recoveries of looted art.

Investigators put the value of the works at about one billion euros (£846m; $1.35bn), Focus said.
Tax investigation

The magazine said the artworks were found by chance in early 2011, when the tax authorities investigated Cornelius Gurlitt, the reclusive son of an art dealer in Munich.

He was suspected of tax evasion, and investigators obtained a search warrant for his home in Munich.

There, they found the cache of some 1,500 artworks which had vanished from sight during the Nazi era.

The younger Mr Gurlitt had kept the works in darkened rooms and sold the occasional painting when he needed money, Focus reports.

The Nazis categorised almost all modern art as "degenerate". It was banned for being un-German or for being the work of Jewish artists.

Some works were confiscated or destroyed; others were sold to collectors for a low price.

There are international warrants out for at least 200 of the works, Focus reports. The collection is being held in a secure warehouse in Munich for the time being.

One of the pieces is said to be a portrait of a woman by Matisse which belonged to the grandfather of French TV presenter Anne Sinclair.

Paul Rosenberg, an art dealer who represented Picasso as well as Matisse, was forced to leave his collection behind when he fled Germany in the 1930s.

The US Holocaust Memorial Museum estimates the Nazis seized about 16,000 works of art in all.

One billion Euros! Shocked
Hope this story gets so much coverage. Front page news & top story bulletins.
This is perfectly timed publicity for Monuments Men.

In any case, I'm glad the works of art were found & some may be returned to museums for all to admire. Others to their rightful private owners.

FOR ALL THE MY MESSAGE TO 1 HOUR NOT HAVE READ

Nazi - looted art 1,500 works of art were decades in apartment

Customs investigators in Bavaria have discovered a great art treasure . As the Bayerische Rundfunk learned from a reliable source , the investigators seized at the home of a resident of Munich about 1,500 works of art .
As of 03.11.2013

According to news magazine "Focus " are including works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse , Marc Chagall, Emil Nolde, Franz Marc , Max Beckmann Max Liebermann . The seized images are now in a report, the security wing of the Bavarian customs in Garching near Munich.

A Berlin art historian trying to determine the origin and value of the works . "Focus" refers to approximately one billion euros . According to the research subject for at least 200 plants found on the official search reports , 300 were among the objects of " degenerate " art.

The Nazis are said to have stolen from Jewish collectors or confiscated as " degenerate art" works, and the magazine. The Augsburg public prosecutor wanted the report to DPA request on Sunday neither confirm nor deny . According to " focus" the investigators slammed into the man's already in spring 2011. A few months earlier he had noticed one cash at the customs control during a train ride from Switzerland to Munich.

When the man is the 80 -year-old Cornelius Gurlitt , son of renowned art historian Hildebrand Gurlitt . Hildebrand Gurlitt was the first director of the Museum Zwickau and acquired there in the 20s numerous works of modern artists with whom he maintained a friendly relationship . For his commitment to the then ostracized modern art and its not pure "Aryan" origin Gurlitt lost his job in 1933 in Zwickau and was independent art dealer in Hamburg. Later Gurlitt was commissioned by the Ministry of Propaganda , works of "degenerate " art from German museums to sell foreign exchange to the country. Gurlitt used this position to sell confiscated works well to domestic collectors.

According to " Focus" had bought the paintings in the 1930s and '40s . After the war he is said to have claimed that the masterpieces were burned after a bombing of Dresden in his apartment. But in fact the son is said to have hoarded in his apartment in Schwabing for more than 50 years. There they were reportedly in dark , trashed rooms themselves shouting Erten shelves. Over the years he had sold some pictures and lived off the money.

Puzzling is currently , as Cornelius Gurlitt could be the " Lion Tamer " by Max Beckmann , the Cologne auction house Lempertz auctioned for 864,000 euros even after the raid . Maybe the picture was lawfully in possession of the Gurlitt family. At the auction the auction house Lempertz announced at that time , the image was recorded register of stolen Nazi art is not in the international Art Loss . In addition, the image was still shown in the 50s on several exhibitions .

According to the prosecutor's focus now determined on suspicion of tax evasion. As the investigators the apartment for several days clearing out the pictures and transported away , the man did not resist

1 Billion Euros Worth of Art Recovered in Munich... Where's George Clooney?

Stolen, confiscated and seized art is discovered in Munich flat.

It’s being called the biggest recovery of lost art from World War II: a flat in Munich turned out to be a veritable treasure trove, hiding €1b worth of art stolen by the Nazis, the BBC report. It's like a scene taken directly from The Monuments Men - George Clooney's forthcoming movie about....well....Nazi-stolen art.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Works from Matisse, Picasso and Chagall are said to be amongst the 1500 artworks confiscated, under Hitler’s Nazi regime, in the 1930s. Some were labelled as ‘degenerate’, some were stolen, and some were forcibly stolen for a mere fraction of their true worth.

A spokesman for German customs said: “We were stunned. From floor to ceiling, from bedroom to bathroom, were piles of old food in tins, much of it from the 80s. And behind it all these pictures worth hundreds of millions of euros.”

The artworks made their way into the hands of a German art collector, Hildebrand Gurlitt. When Gurlitt died, the artworks were passed down to his son, Cornelius, all without the knowledge of the authorities.

Cornelius is reported to have kept himself going by selling the odd piece, trying not to alert the authorities. He is thought to have sold the Lion Tamer by Beckmann on 2 December 2011. The painting was sold for €864,000 at an auction house in Cologne.

Gwendolen Webster - an art historian who has spent time studying works from the Nazis' "degenerate art" collection – explained to the Guardian that the significance of the find was "absolutely staggering for historians". He added that legally, it was a minefield.

The story comes as a movie surrounding the dissipation of Jewish culture gets a major delay. The Monuments Men – starring George Clooney and Matt Damon – has been pushed back to next year, meaning it won’t be eligible for The Oscars.

Suspected Nazi-looted art found in Germany mirrors 'Monuments Men' plot

By John Horn
November 4, 2013, 4:44 p.m.

Movies occasionally grow a little more topical due to current events -- earlier this year, coverage of Trayvon Martin’s killing and the George Zimmerman trial made conversations about “Fruitvale,” a drama about the fatal shooting of a black man, even more relevant.

But rarely does such news date back 70 years.

Over the weekend, the upcoming George Clooney film “The Monuments Men,” a drama about the ragtag team of academics, historians and museum curators charged with saving thousands of art masterpieces looted by the Nazis, was the beneficiary of some startling new information tied to World War II.

On Sunday, a German magazine reported that a raid on a Munich apartment two years ago had yielded artwork suspected of having been looted by Nazis. The works, valued at more than $1 billion, include paintings by Picasso and Matisse that were assumed to have been lost or destroyed during the global conflict.

Some or all of the pieces, recovered in the home of Cornelius Gurlitt, the 80-year-old son of a well-known Nazi-era art dealer, had been confiscated by the Nazis or sold cheaply by people desperate to leave Germany, according to the magazine Focus.

“The fact is there are still thousands of masterpieces yet to be found or returned to the rightful heirs,” said Grant Heslov, who with Clooney adapted Robert Edsel’s book “The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History.”

“Some [of the artwork], as in this most recent case, is hidden in people’s homes, and some is hanging in plain sight on the walls of museums. [It’s] wild to make a film set in the '40s and see the story still playing out in 2013,” Heslov said.

The movie, which Clooney directed and stars in, features Matt Damon, John Goodman and Bill Murray. It originally had been set to come out Dec. 18, but Clooney and Heslov told domestic distributor Sony Pictures that they couldn’t finish the film’s special effects in time. “The Monuments Men” now will be released Feb. 7.

The raid on Gurlitt’s home was conducted two years ago, the German magazine Focus reported, but German officials have been trying ever since to sort out the provenance of the artwork, which is in storage outside Munich.

No, the timing is great. The magnitude of this story is only just being revealed. They've just touched the surface. By the time it's covered repeatedly, more stolen art potentially found, the historical significance will gain momentum.

It's perfectly timed.  Great publicity for Monuments Men over a 3 month or so lead up.
When this news sinks into the public subconscious, it'll still be intriguing enough so Monuments Men will seem even more appealing. One billions Euros worth of art!!

Maybe you are right. The found is so massive they will talk about it for month maybe years. And who knows what else will come out about this investigation...

The district attorney gave a press conference today. They said that they even found art work they didn't even know it existed and it will take YEARS until they will find the owner.

Really wonder how long it takes until George or Grant will comment on that. If they want to comment.....

Recycling of artwork stolen by the Nazis in our opinion "is the true story of the unknown and unwritten post-war Germany". Nazi Art Stash Discovered: Cue Up the Monuments Men Sequel!

Nazi Art Stolen Monuments.

The 1,400 works of modern art discovered yesterday in a Munich apartment may have been stolen by the Nazis, but it’s unlikely they would have ended up in the infamous Führermuseum that Hitler was preparing. Instead, says historian Robert Edsel, the Nazis most likely intended to sell the works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, and other “Degenerate Artists” so they could buy more paintings and sculptures by such Führer favorites as Hans Thoma, Lucas Cranach the Elder, and Johannes Vermeer.

“There were four key Nazi dealers assigned towards selling them, trading them, moving them, trying to get some currency for them. It wasn’t lost on the Nazis that they were fungible,” says Robert Edsel, author of The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History. The paintings and sculptures would be “sold to raise currency or used as barter for works of art that they did want.”

Yesterday’s discovery took place at the Munich apartment of Cornelius Gurlitt, the son of a dubious German art “collector” named Hildebrand Gurlitt. The stash includes works by Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall, as well as Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, and Ernst Kirchner—all artists whose work Hitler would have acquired, vilified, then sold for profit in this truly bizarre art-laundering scheme.

The outing of the Munich cache would have been ideal for George Clooney, whose film The Monuments Men, based on Edsel’s book, was slated for release this month. The film, which stars George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, and Cate Blanchett, will now hit theaters in February 2014. Edsel, who has been involved with the film from the start, hopes audiences will not quickly forget the significance of yesterday’s find: “I think that everybody on our team, from the filmmakers to the studio, feel like this is a chance to ring the gong and engage the public to help us find these hundreds of thousands of missing objects that are still out there.”

True it's me and the district attorney also took that long to make that public because of "investigation tactics".
I'm sure they are trying to get those people who he sold some of the art too.

I'm not sure if someone is still interested. Pls let me know if not and I stop posting this story. The artical is long but explains in details the past life of the guy who was hiding the art in Munich.

Google translation

Gurlitt cousins: The art dealer by the Nazis

The Munich Art Fund raises questions, as does the life of Hildebrand Gurlitt. The art dealer was enthusiastic about modern art - and acted for the Nazis as "degenerate art". Now Wolfgang cousin gets into view. His life was strikingly similar.

It is still unclear where most of the approximately 1,400 works of art originate , which were found in the Munich apartment of Cornelius Gurlitt . The Augsburg public prosecutor still holds firmly to its extremely conservative information policy. After all, there is consensus about the fact that a large part of the found works from the estate of Cornelius ' father Hildebrand Gurlitt dates .

But there was a Gurlitt : Wolfgang Gurlitt , cousin of Hildebrand, also art dealer.
Also works from the collection may have stored for years in the rental apartment in Schwabing . Stella Rollig , Director of Lentos Art Museum in Linz, the Wolfgang Gurlitt once headed , and for the city of Linz in the fifties acquired large parts of Gurlitt Private Collection , believes and where encountered in Cornelius ' apartment convolute possibly four works by Gustav Klimt Egon Schiele could be included that are missing for decades. Also, it requires insight into inventory and related documentation of the Munich collection .

Is amazing how strong the resume of his cousin Wolfgang Gurlitt Hildebrand similar , although both appear to have had little to do with each other . Both collected , treated and promoted in the twenties and thirties independently modern art. Until the Nazis , who disliked this avant-garde movement , they made life more difficult .

Not be taken as accurate with the ideology

Hildebrand Gurlitt 1930 lost his post as director of the Royal Albert Museum in Zwickau , where he had issued against the odds of modern artists such as Max Pechstein, Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt- Rottluff also . Wolfgang got into Berlin with the acquisition from his father the art market and its innovative art publisher in financial difficulties.

But then calculated the Nazis came to her, who had thousands of works of modern art from the museums as "degenerate art " and dispossessed - and this now wanted to make money abroad . Apparently, they could use the expertise and the contacts of the two cousins abroad well .

The two were soon part of the small number of so-called recyclers who acted for the regime with " degenerate art " . And they still got a special order from the Ministry of Propaganda Goebbels : You should purchase art abroad for the planned "Führer Museum " in Linz, Hitler a heart project .

Doubts about the affability

Apparently, the relationship between the regime and the two cousins remained strictly business . At least Hildebrand was Gurlitt - denazified quickly - because of his Jewish origins and his advocacy of modern art . The Allies trusted him so far that they have a large number of confiscated works of art without large checks returned him five years after the war . And also Wolfgang Gurlitt appeared the occupiers suspicion.

Both were active again after the war as a private art dealer and kicked one more time as museum directors in appearance. Hildebrand Gurlitt headed from 1948 until his death in 1956 the Düsseldorf Art Association . His cousin took calculated in Linz, the management of the museum opened in 1948 New Gallery , in the meantime the nickname Wolfgang Gurlitt Museum and was now called Lentos . He sold the city of Linz large parts of his collection . Only at the end of the fifties , more and more doubts about the credibility Wolfgang came on , it became clear that the origin of many works is not clear, and also was suspected that the art dealer does not clean his private businesses separated from the museum. Gurlitt was deposed , he died in 1965.

They have benefited

Almost seems incredible that there seems to be little evidence about an exchange between the two cousins , despite all the similarities in the resume . According to the current state of research and Wolfgang Hildebrand Gurlitt have not had much to do in their life together , so Stella Rollig from Lentos . " But we can not exclude that they may even have business relationships . "

Nazis are not probably been the two cousins . Its history as a proponent of the designated by the Nazis as "degenerate" modern art and her family of origin rather not speak of this. But important art dealer of the Nazis they were, and that, they are also likely to have benefited personally .
Whether they used the advantage of the situation to enrich themselves by amassing ill-gotten works , or whether they saw themselves in their enthusiasm for art in the right, to save the modern art through the period of Nazi rule , can not currently say.

Both art dealer had asserted that large parts of their collections were destroyed in the war. Given the findings of the first , at least in the case of Hildebrand Gurlitt more than questionable. Perhaps the opening of the Munich Treasury also brings light into the lives of these two obscure art dealer.

In this video he said something like

"That's how powerful we are to be able to get the Germans to break the story....."

Do you think he meant it in an ironic way? I can't imagine Hollywood is that powerful to push the district attorney to open a file about art which was found nearly 2 years ago. I think it was just coincidence that it came out now at this time. scratch

Hollywood shining its spot light; not necessarily sarcasm.Make no mistake of the power they yield from politics to rewriting history to moral shifts through the use of dramatic license, popularity, media and the spinning headlines, and humanitarian avenues. Many issues are tossed to the forefront this way.
"The Monuments Men---what war? It's about the Art."
Happy Veteran's Day.

His Nibs' way of saying it's a total coincidence. Ironic wit. He's brilliant at that.....

But by shining the light on it in Monuments Men and highlighting what happened to make people more aware, there could be some really promising outcomes
