National Board of Review Names HUGO Best Film of the Year; DRIVE, THE ARTIST, and THE DESCENDANTS Make Top 10
by Matt Goldberg Posted:December 1st, 2011 at 12:48 pm
The National Board of Review has announced their honors for 2011. As always, the wide selection allows the NBR to technically have a say in directing awards season, and their picks remain solid. While I didn’t go nuts over Hugo, a lot of people did and so it’s not surprising NBR gave it Best Picture and named Martin Scorsese as Best Director. For the most part, I like all of NBR’s choices. I’m glad any time Drive gets attention, the acting picks are all worthy, and I’m happy Crime After Crime and 13 Assassins got some love. Notable snubs include Young Adult, Moneyball, and Martha Marcy May Marlene. Of course, anything Clint Eastwood does has to make NBR’s Top 10 so that’s why a spot is wasted on J. Edgar.
Here’s the press release, which includes all the winners along with a statement on why NBR chose Hugo as the Best Film of 2011:

“HUGO is such a personal film by Martin Scorsese,” said Annie Schulhof, NBR President. “It is a tribute to the early years of cinema that uses today’s cutting edge technology to bring the audience into a completely unique and magical world. It is visually stunning and emotionally engaging.”
A select group of knowledgeable film enthusiasts and professionals, academics, young filmmakers and students, the National Board of Review viewed over 250 films this year including studio, independent, foreign-language, animated and documentary selections. These screenings were frequently followed by in-depth discussions with filmmakers, directors, actors, producers, and screenwriters. Voting ballots were tabulated by the accounting firm of Lutz & Carr, LLP.
The National Board of Review honors diverse members of the film community at their annual Awards Gala, which also acts as a fundraiser for student grant philanthropy. Hosted by Natalie Morales, this year’s Gala will take place on January 10, 2012 at Cipriani’s 42nd St. in New York City.

It's really great to see acknowledgement of his work. Do you think he'll be there to collect the award in January? I'm wondering whether that will clash with his surgery.

Hope George is collecting air miles - looks like he's off to NYC later this week.

A PREVIEW of the must-attend parties, talked-about openings and fashionable night spots for the week ahead
The National Board of Review, which weighs in every year with its Oscar picks, holds its annual awards gala. Winners were announced Dec. 1, so the biggest surprise may be Emma Stone’s dress. But that won’t stop the stars from showing up. Expected attendees and presenters include Martin Scorsese, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton and Christopher Plummer.
Cipriani 42nd Street, 110 East 42nd Street, nbrmp.org. Jan. 10 from 6 p.m. Invitation only.

With the upcoming appearances that have been announced lately (Inside the Actor's Studio, Rock Center), the various award shows he'll be attending, and the screenings/cocktail parties/nominee luncheons circuit that comes with award season, do you think it's possible for him to have surgery before the Oscars and recuperate in time? Back and neck surgery is no joke; don't think we'll be seeing him at a football game two days later. I'm thinking he might have scheduled it for right after everything finishes up. Then he can recover and head right into summer-in-Italy mode. Just a thought.
Missa- Clooney-love. And they said it wouldn't last

Don't understand why so many here think he is having back and neck surgery. He had elbow surgery. Is he having more?

Re: George wins bis actor at NBR
I would think it's after all the awards and if he does I don't see him on a long bike trip in April. Maybe that is the cover. There isn't time now before the Oscars or maybe he isn't having any neck surgery it was just his elbow.

Because it was annouced that the reason he couldn't film with Soderbergh (in Feb? March?) was because he'd be recuperating from surgery.blubelle wrote:Don't understand why so many here think he is having back and neck surgery. He had elbow surgery. Is he having more?
This is from memory so someone who has a better memory than me might be able to get the details right.

Re: George wins bis actor at NBR
That's right and shoulder and neck surgery both got mentioned as the reasons why he couldn't do the movie. He doesn't seem to have anything lined up for awhile so I think it's true. Probably waiting till after the Oscars then he will disappear for awhile.
