How to get a screenplay into George's hands? Empty Want to work on a sript with you

Post by ditto1224 Mon 19 Dec 2011, 14:06

This is my fist time on this site...GC inspires me in secret and devious ways Wink which I do not want my hubby to discover Shocked Shocked. Anyway, I think all of you girls out there know what I mean. I am working on this really great script and I can see George playing a part in it. It is political (Middle East) but there's also a great human/friendship story in it. Kind of Syrianna with a heart. My husband is of North African/Arabic ancestry, so I have special insights into the culture. Any tips on passing the finished script on? My birthday is coming up soon and I guarantee, any hope in that direction would be my best birthday present EVER.
Keep up the good work y'all !!

By the way: I like Stacey.

How to get a screenplay into George's hands? Empty Re: How to get a screenplay into George's hands?

Post by davidarochelle Mon 19 Dec 2011, 20:58

Ditto, Welcome to the site. Must break my no posting except for PM rule, to help you out. This is a legal issue. You must have a screenwriter's agent before you can sell your script. There are Hollywood and New York agents that specifically represent author's and get their work seen by the right people, who buy scripts. Even unknown actors get flooded with requests of all kinds. If they appear in something that is even remotely like someone else's script; then it is "lawsuit time." For that reason, agents will usually return ALL unsolicited mail and scripts from unknown sources.

If I were you, I would start out by publishing your story in a popular magazine for some pay, or even print an excerpt online. You can sell ads for your site, if enough people visit it. Then contact local talk shows and the news media to promote it. Develop an interest and a following; then contact book publishers. If it sells as a book or is a novel topic, then screenwriting agents will come calling you with $$$$. Then you can suggest an actor for a specific part. Hope this helps, and please don't get scammed. There are too many "time wasters" in Hollywood. Good luck to you.

Welcome, Ditto

First register your script to the Writers Guild. Google Writers Guild for their link and contact info. Their website should give you details for registering scripts. I just did a google and there is a East and a West branch depending where you live.

You just needed to do a google to find address. Not all production companies accept unsolicited screenplays so you have send them a letter with a brief description to see if they will accept the script to read.

How to get a screenplay into George's hands? Empty How to get a screenplay into George's hands?

Post by davidarochelle Mon 19 Dec 2011, 22:07

The problem with selling a screenplay from an unknown author is that there are so many factors other than the writing that determine if it will be bought. For example, could it be shot for a low-budget? Are there tie-ins to a location that would subsidize the cost? Or would it attract a "special effects" director, or one specializing in "action-type" films? Are there enough "meaty" parts for "name" actors? Or is it an "indy-type" film; which means it would have different buyers. "On Golden Pond," by an unknown author with connections, spent years between the time that it was registered and made into a film. That is why I suggested that you develop "a name" for yourself and your project first. With the right "buzz" your screenplay may not end up in "development hell."

How to get a screenplay into George's hands? Empty Re: How to get a screenplay into George's hands?

Post by davidarochelle Tue 20 Dec 2011, 06:02

Ditto,
You must realize that there are plenty of well-established screenwriters trying to get G (or more likely his management team) to read their latest script. Note that G often writes his own projects with his long-term friends, about "pet" personal issues.

But I will not be so negative, as the vast majority of "insiders" are to all of us "creatives." There is a big power game in Hollywood. You are nothing and nobody, until someone with power sees you as a source of money. Then everyone wants to be "on your team" to get some of that money.

Your goal must be to NOT do what everyone else is trying. In an overcrowded creative field, you must learn how to "stand out" even if you are severely criticized for doing so. That's why I suggested ways where you can get free publicity for the basic story, and create interest first. Do you have an attention-getting website where the curious can learn about "the exotic world" where your story takes place? Can you add interesting pictures of the outfits or costumes your characters would wear? How about recipes for the food they would eat? Tie that in with the many online recipe exchange sites. The larger the number of hits on your website the more likely it is that you can create interest in the local media for you and your story. Perhaps a weekly paragraph from your script would entice as well.

But please, please don't try to put your valuable story, and all of your very hard work, at the bottom of a massive pile of scripts that a very lowly assistant may never find the free time to read.

Fluffy, I have seen different addresses for Smokehouse. I think they switched studio affiliations, depending on what else G was working on.
LornaDoone, anything where the supply is greater than the demand is an arduous process. When financial success is not solely determined by creative talent, and luck and persistence plays a large part, one's ability to alter "the rules of the game" to one's benefit is extremely vital. You just cannot do what everyone else is doing; even G stood out be being very, very charming. You must use whatever skills God gave you to be original.

My advice would be not too give away too much of your story. That is how some writers get the ideas for their books and it's a lot easier for someone already with contacts to get the attention you can't! You will need to be careful, brave and patient. But you won't get anything if you don't try!

His office is in Studio City but Sony with whom he and Grant have a development deal is in Culver City so two addresses makes sense.

Sony will most likely just forward any mail for them to their Studio City address.
