Why Do We Always Feel for the Woman?

Posted: 12/ 5/11

Spoiler alert -- If you don't want to know the central twist to the plot, bang out now and come back after you've seen the movie. Otherwise, press on...

What I liked about The Descendants was that it told a relationship story where the man was clearly deserving of the sympathy. That's a change. When I think of all the movies I've seen from Thelma and Louise through the Sex and the City big screen attempts, I realize that point of view is fairly rare. Matt King, played with skill and subtlety by George Clooney, is presented with the knowledge that
Spoiler:

My point is this: We've been conditioned from years of legislation and cultural influences to believe that women usually have it worse when a relationship falls apart. The concept of lifetime alimony paid from him to her (or any alimony, for that matter) presumes the little lady was left flat, and will have much more trouble fending for herself than the man will. The First Wives Club, or Waiting to Exhale or even Fatal Attraction taught us that, usually, the wife is the aggrieved party, whether she's emotionally neglected, cheated upon, duped or used.

That's all cool, until I think of some of the real people I know in real-life relationships. Like the hardworking small business owner whose second child wasn't his child at all. He wasn't told of his wife's betrayal and cover-up 'til the divorce which, incidentally, was around said child's 13th birthday. Or the man who's wife was secretly gambling away their nest egg through all-night sessions with online poker sites, while he was out of town working. Or the man who ended up with custody of his two boys and raised them on his own, without the benefit of child support or participation from their able-bodied but selfish mother. In all cases, these men stepped up and did right by their families, and in every case wasn't easy.

So bravo to The Descendants for looking at relationships through a less-frequently used prism. Come for Clooney, stay for the balance.

Because Katiedot, the percentage of women that actually get away with an affair is very small and when the women get caught, they area put on a pedestal to be judge by both men and women, as for men, they are admired.

In this world, society expects women to be a certain way even in the Western world ( [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Women are expected to just look pretty and find a rich husband to look after them. Their own parents have low expectations of them (read last paragraph, [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The "law" is the same for both men and women. Those who choose to abuse it in one way or another will receive their just due, believe me... As for this movie and what it depicts, Kudos! Because women are just as bad as men sometimes.

Affairs are a nasty and hurtful affair, there's no winning, the whole family
suffers. But, men are the biggest offenders.

and, no, I'm not downing the movie. I think it's a well put-together script with brilliant actors. I'm glad George was nominated for best actor, he deserved it.

In one of my old workplaces the boss was found out to be having an affair with one of they young office girls. He did not get off scott free it didn't help he was newly married to a really lovely girl. He lost his job cause he lost the respect of the other workers and no one would work with him after he promoted his bed buddy over someone else. It caused all sorts of problems they both ended up leaving. Karma came around when once he had left his wife, lost his house, lost his job his little girlfriend dumped him for her new boss! You are right there are no winners with affairs it ends up hurting everyone.
