Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption
by Laura Hillenbrand

Book Description (from Amazon)
On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he’d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

In her long-awaited new book, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in Seabiscuit. Telling an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.

Classy! I bet whenever they see Stacy dressed they are disappointed she hasn't been seen a bikini for awhile! Do you really think any of these "fans" are that interested in what purse she is buying for her friends?

And whether or not this is a real or fake relationship, being a George follower for the last couple of years has definitely made me rethink his intelligence, or motives. My image - and the image he's put out - is that he IS a straight-forward, classy, what-you-see-is-what-you-get, kinda guy, yet everything in his life seems to say the opposite.

Exactly what I've been thinking. If he knows everything that Stacy is doing (and I believe that he does), then he is clearly cool with it, otherwise he'd stop it. Yet I can't count the number of times, just in the past few months, that he has insisted that he and his relationships are "private". Either he's not the straightforward, what-you-see-is-what-you-get type, or he has a very different definition of the word "private" than does the rest of the world.

As to the "Who would you like to see him date?" question, that's hard to say. I think either someone like Luciana Damon, who is clearly not it in for the fame and fortune (and, by the way, met her husband while tending bar in a nightclub. See, I'm not a snob about occupation Laughing ). Go ahead and google her; I couldn't find a single photo of her modeling for the paparazzi on the red carpet as though she were the star of the show. If it must be someone famous, then someone along the lines of Charlize Theron, who has been fairly adamant about not wanting marriage or children. She's also leggy, blonde and in her thirties, so she fits some of George's requirements as well. Very Happy

Pari, I don't KNOW George; I don't KNOW Stacy; I don't KNOW the countless others before her. However, just because George lets them walk the carpet with him and lets them get papped with him in their "private" life occasionally, doesn't mean that he is sacrificing his hard earned image to protect her dignity. He "seems" to find work for them (protecting their dignity - NOT), but he doesn't endorse them; he doesn't support their work; he practically calls them names on red carpets or speaks of them in a rather defamitory way; almost never calls them girlfriend (I believe I've only seen it in print or maybe spoken once). He's not "dating" them for their dignity. It was reported that after HE received a phone message from someone in Sarah's past defaming her, he spoke of it and tried to find out who. However, he NEVER speaks out to defend his girl about anything seriously bad written about her. So, her "dignity" is all over the internet, and the next one will be there too.

Totally agree Dex - George chooses these women because he doesn't want to AND KNOWS he is not going to fall in love with them. He has stated many times just how important his career is to him. Does dating these women hurt his career? Really, I suppose it's swings and roundabouts - he loses some fans but gains others. And as he's said, the people who are important to him still return his phone calls, so while we may debate the pros and cons of the ramifications of his choices, those choices don't ultimately seem to be doing him that much harm.

I don't think there are many of us who make his choices "our problem". Personally I can't see how discussing George's choice of women is making it our problem - I just don't "get" that connection. Discussing someone with a degree of, shall we say enthusiasm, doesn't mean we make them "our problem". We make glabal warming and the political fervour of ALL fundamentalists (be they Christian or Moslem or callathumpian) and the fight against cancer and a myriad of other things our problem - because we have some control and/or input into righting the wrongs we see in those instances. And our opinions shape that input. But we do not have to have control or input to have opinions. Just as zizi said her brain works, we have opinions. It is impossible not to have opinions. It is part and parcel of said brain working! Those opinions will differ greatly, and most times we here on OH find that we can discuss those differing opinions cohesively without feeling we need to defend them.

Are we entitled to have a negative opinion of cracy? IMHO most definately YES! I think her "behaviour/demeanour" (call it what you will) on WWE was little more than pornographic. And while she may not have posed bare-breasted in a nun's outfit she has had no problem doing official photo-shoots where she again/still makes her backside (and further along) the main focus of said photo-shoot. I have no respect for Paris Hilton or the Kardashians either or any of these so-called "celebritys" who seem to think that they are above doing anything remotely like real work. And cracy has proved herself to be of their ilk - as I said (probably back in part 1 of this thread) that she has upped her appearance fee without doing anything other than being seen on red carpets with George Clooney. And now she has flown half way around the world to accept a fee to appear at a UNICEF charity do. Has she worked for UNICEF before? I doubt it, otherwise someone would have found some evidence of that work. But no one has. Is UNICEF to be respected for paying said appearance fee - absolutely not. But the PR professionals will tell us that that's how it's done! Well whoop-de-do, and little green apples - it still doesn't make it "right" IMHO!! (and apologies Katie because I remembered after posting that you're in PR, but I don't agree with a lot of PR norms.)

And if cracy wants to pose by herself on red carpets then she is open to all the criticism anyone wants to give. And if she wants to make her personal and not-so-personal thoughts public on twitter then that also gives anyone the right of reply. If the majority of that criticism is negative, does that make it wrong? IMHO, no, just an honest opinion from the person making it.

Actually I've never understood this argument that George should "defend the dignity" of a g/f. They have never tried to defend their own dignity and they've made those choices as adult women, so why should it be George's responsibility to do so? And yes he "jokes" about g/f's when questioned on red carpet interviews and yes I've cringed with the best of them, but to answer some of those questions with any degree of seriousness would result in a slew of "he's said this is the girl he will marry" type stories coming out. AND, how many of these women have changed their modus-operandi once they start dating George Clooney? None that I can think of, so again, why is it George's responsibility to defend them?

And missa - Charlize Theron: been there, done that. Apparently they dated for five minutes yonks ago.

All of the women he's dated to date have been proud of something, they weren't "wallflowers" or laid back individuals. If they were, George would never been attracted to them. While their ocupations may not meet your standards, none of them were "women of the evening". They were all "doing something" presumably worthwhile.

Remember the video of her with Mario, well, notice that Cray is backtracking or just plain lying about Christmas. She told Mario that she didn't know the destination this year. Hello! its already December and she and her parents didn't book reservations plane and/or hotel. Maybe George got p*ssed at her for blabbing about another holiday. My guess, too, is that she wants to do everything EC did, but better. EC brought her parents to Cabo at Christmas (even though it was 2 years into the relationship) so now its sweet Cray's turn even though its only been a few months.

"It is a shame that after all the hard work done and won for women’s rights, that in the 21st century, a woman is openly making a living as some actor’s hired piece…pathetic. "This is a comment from Celebitchy that explains better than I can why his girlfriend choices bother me so much.

As a woman and a mother of two lovely daughters I cringe when I see situations like this. She's disrepecting herself whether or not she knows it or cares. She's pretty much whoring herself out whether she's a hired piece or not.

Too bad because during DWTS I was a huge fan of hers and overlooked all the wrestling "poses". At the time I just thought it was a case of foolish decisions made by a young adult but this thing she has with George that is so obviously PR driven has made me dislike her. No excuse of being young and stupid this time.

How are we as women supposed to be taken seriously when you have these dumb bimbos capitalizing on their looks and sexuality to get what they want? I'm glad i didn't have to spend money on that college degree of hers. She should have just taken classes on showing boobs, smiling, and shaking your ass.

I'd love to see George with someone who is a good example of what we as women can achieve. Although maybe someone like that would be too threatening and intimidating for him.

Agree to disagree, sure.

Please don't take this so badly; the nature of a discussion is that when you disagree with someone, you tell them why you disagree and show the reasons why you think their conclusion is wrong. You seemed genuinely surprised, puzzled and even angry that Stacy gets so much media coverage which is why I asked you if you understood how fame works.

I'm not here 24 hours a day and have been away for the past three weeks. It's not even possible for me to respond to every single post that I disagree with, while yours did cover most points that others have mentioned earlier that I wanted to respond to.

Young and stupid? I'd be calling someone 15/16 young and stupid. Not someone who was well and truly past the accepted age of adulthood. Ye Gods, it was only in my grandparents early life that people left school and went to work at 13 or 14. And let's not forget the boys who put their ages UP to 16 so they could go fight in WW2. Yet nowadays, when people are supposedly so much better educated and supposedly so much more sophisticated at an earlier age that we seem to be excusing bad behaviour and bad life choices well into the twenties and even thirties with the "too young to know better" tag!!!!!!! Call her stupid, but don't pardon her (or anyone else past the age of 21) by saying it's because she was young when she did it. She knew damn well what she was doing. It was a very conscious choice.

Maybe her being on the show with him at The Grove was part of that contract.

I've often wondered about some of these "celebrity" endorsements and these two tweets seem to answer in the negative - do any of these "celebrities" even see the stuff before they "lend" their name to them. There's prostitution and then there's prostitution.

My best guess is 'depends on the celebrity'. Some may actually care about what they endorse, but others are quite happy to take the money and run. I believe the official George Clooney line on this is: "I'm allwed to make a living". Not sure I remembered that exactly.

I also think it depends on the opportunities the celebrity gets. An A-lister like George generally has more of a choice over the products they can endorse, as a lot of products would want his endorsement. He can pick products that he likes. Although, keep in mind the majority of George's endorsements are oversees, as it is still considered cheapening an image. Now someone like Stacy doesn't have the same opportunities, and is probably less likely to choose the products, just taking the opportunity. We know she doesn't really care about whether she is cheapening her image. To be honest after WWE this is an upgrade in her image. I have got to give the girl credit she certainly is working it

Thanks lelacorb the only show I have seen are the vids on the internet, and they show EC and another young woman in little clothing dancing on a table, desk, counter, while 2 men stare up at them while talking. Not as sexually demeaning as SK show in the vid up thread but IMHO what EC did as a velina is demeaning to-for women considering this is what they both are paid to do at their work place.Yes, they get a better salary than other jobs, they are seen on TV, they meet contacts in the entertainment business, but I respect a woman who works in a factory 40 hours a week to earn her living over what these two women have on there resume's.

For all of you ladies here, I say that SK is in it for the fame, glory and perks, and is using her relationship with George as a launching pad for furthering her career.

As for George choosing these "bimbo-type" chicks for GFs, then, all I can say about George, is, "you are what your friends are," and, "you are judged by the company you keep."

We are accountable for our choices and actions of our lives, and you reap what you sow.

I simply said that in Gaza the news show there is no vulgarity, then you may think it's more honest to make a living working in the factory 40 hours a week, I could choose I would do the tissue paper working less and earning more especially! There are different ways of looking at life! It is the vulgarity of that bother me in that video and vulgar videos from Stacy's full the Web! I do not upset the nude as I scovolge a woman in a bikini. If you look at the past of almost all the actresses in Hollywood who are famous are pictures of nude or nearly so, but hardly vulgar photos or videos such as those of Stacy.

Wikipedia definition: Romance is the pleasurable feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love As we can't possibly know how George is feeling, perhaps it's real, not fake.

Like Cinders says George's life has just begun. He's only 50, not too old for anything or anybody he wants to persue. Right now he's persuing his career goals and Stacy Keibler.

Have you only "loved" one person in your life? Didn't you have "boyfriends" before you found the "one"? You sometimes sound as if you are are looking for the an ideal man to put on a pedestal.

Leacorb, I wasn't trying to insult your comments, I haven't spent much time on computer lately, it took me time and had to go back to page 3 on this thread to try and catch up on what and why was being discussed. I don't know much about Italian TV, it's just my opinion, I'm not fond of a lot of american TV and what women will do for fame. The generation I grew up in women made so many changes in the work place, so when I see young women who are willing to do what SK,EC do to have this life of fame, well it saddens me. These are two attractive women, whom have no responsibilities (a family to support) who are not under educated women, and this is what they choose to do to earn a living. Yes it says something about George, to me at least, that this is his type over and over again. I'm sure both are fun, nice, and whatever else has been said, but it doesn't change the fact that IMO George choices are always to spend his life with women who degrade themselves to earn a living and not because they have no other options. It has changed the way I feel about George.

I don't believe it has even been said that UNICEF paid the appearance fee. The fundraiser was on behalf of UNICEF and it is not clear to me who, if anyone, paid her fee. It could have been one of the sponsoring businesses I suppose--but I wish they would have donated the money instead if that is the case!

Maybe George has paid the way of Stacy were both happy, he took off her feet for a few days (it's been out with friends!) And she has had her photos and a bit of media attention.

It was this comment from Celebitchy that was on the thread that might have given some people the impression that she was being paid for her appearance. Question

By the way, even Stacy knows that this is going to pass – why do you think she’s doing all of these solo appearances? She’s getting paid, and she’s getting paid a lot more now that “Clooney’s Girlfriend” is on her resume. She probably got $30,000 to show up in Munich, PLUS travel and hotel costs. I hope she’s saving that money.

Perhaps it was George to pay the fee to get rid of Stacy few days of her (the night he was seen having dinner with friends if I'm wrong!) And she was happy to be photographed wearing the long dress and have some of media attention!

Daily Addictions – Weekend Edition »
Stacy Keibler Looking Stunningly Hot, And Busty, And Curvy, Oh My!
December 5th, 2011

Here’s Stacy Keibler making her boyfriend George Clooney look even luckier than he did the last time we saw her, and she did so at the Barbara Tag shindig in Munich, Germany the other day by looking ridiculously sexy and busting out some wicked cleavage and sizzling curves in one hell of a skimpy dress … hoocie mama! Hot damn, this girl has been on a serious hotness streak ever since “officially” being unveiled as Clooney’s new girl (see here), and it looks like said hotness streak isn’t going to end. At least I hope it doesn’t, because this peach is unleashing uber hotness and sexy skin and curves as if the survival of the human race depended on it. And if you ask me, it does! Enjoy!

Somebody asked about Stacy in Germany:
I am German, and before she started dating George I've never heard of her.
Also, I have never heard of that charity-event in Munich she went to.

This is my favorite comment this week. from Celebitchy thread about Stacy and her gown on the red carpet in Munich.

Best I’ve seen her look. The dress fits (I’d like it to be a touch longer, but…). The hair, the makeup, the demeanor – all good.

I wonder if the budget look was a plan? Roll her out in the horrendous outfits, etc. so that when she improves people only have nice things to say about her. Kinda get the sh*t storm over in the first few months and then bait and switch to confuse us.

Maybe George paid for her to be in Germany to make her look good. Unfortnuately, just like EC and Krista her past is coming out and she is what she is.

I took a look at the picture I think it is her god daughter and that probably is Einstein. I think it is another way for her to get on the gossip sites. The in thing on the gossipsites is for many actresses to be papped with their babies and children. People love a cute baby. One of the sites last week was celebs with their dogs. I wouldnt put it past her, if many people who don't know that it is her god daughter think that is George and her baby. Rumours begin- watch. LOL

It isn't even her dog, it's Georges. If she wants one she should get one of her own. I don't think it's smart putting a baby and Georges dog with a comment like that either. But then I guess she can't put a picture of George instead!

I was wondering the same thing. IMO she may not be all that bright but I can't imagine she would be stupid enough to push the baby thing this early. I mean seriously. Shocked

Stacy made a response on the following tweet: RT@ashlangrose: It was me who said I wanted to marry Ryan Reynolds, not @stacyKeibler. She has George! Stacy answered with: "Tryin'to get me in trouble? Ha! Smile

Isn't Stacy admitting just now that she is not allowed to tweet directly about George?? Is that why she is always so cryptic about using his name ........
