Ryan Gosling: George Clooney is always 'having more fun'
If there is an elder actor who represents the sort of easy elan and bold moves that Ryan Gosling aspires to, it's George Clooney, his fellow headliner and director of The Ides of March (opening Oct. 7).
Gosling, whose neo-noir crime thriller Drive opened Friday, thinks he might have cracked the code of how to be Clooney.
"George Clooney is having a better time than you are -- you being everyone," says Gosling after observing his pal through the making of Ides. "Everybody in the world, no matter how much fun they think they are having, George Clooney is having more fun."
However, Gosling acknowledges that what we see of this seemingly always-smiling escort of lovely ladies is partly a façade. Behind it is someone who is as dedicated, responsible and as ambitious as they come. "George is a very complicated guy," he says. "It is interesting to watch up close. Because he is the writer, the producer, the director and star. He's managing satellites over Dafur and he's checking scores on the game and he's got four or five practical jokes in the works at all times."
That includes the one exposed by Gosling in several interviews while at the Toronto International Film Festival: On the set, Clooney would call him over for what appeared to be a serious discussion while secretly spraying the crotch of his actor's pants with water. Then he would force him to go in front of the camera all wet. But Gosling has paid him back by taking away the all-important element of surprise in any future attacks. "Now he's upset because he can't do that anymore."
