Private Messages on Clooney's Open House

As I think everyone knows, we have a private message system on this forum where posters can send each other private messages (PMs).

In order to send or receive PMs, you need to have made a minimum of 15 posts in the forum first.  Once you've done that, you can click on the 'mailbox' link at the top and  PM anyone else on this forum.  

If you've received a message, it'll say 'new message!' in the menu bar at the top where it usually says 'mailbox'.  Click on that to see your PMs.

Note:

The PM system exists to allow people to chat privately, share jokes and so on.  If you don't want to receive PMs at all, you can stop it by clicking on your 'profile' in the menu at the top of the screen and going to the 'preferences' tab.  There you'll see the option to stop receiving PMs.

If you want to block a particular person's PMs you can do that by following these instructions: http://www.clooneysopenhouse.com/t1116-how-to-ignore-another-poster and remember that this also hides all of their posts in the forum too.

If you feel someone has sent you an offensive or abusive PM, please don't reply to them.  Contact me or one of the moderators and forward a copy of the PM. Please bear in mind that we're on different time zones and aren't always online.

I understand that some posters are sending PMs to other posters asking them to edit or remove their posts.  I hope that's not true as I'm not exactly sure why any of our regular posters believe that they can make such requests to others but I'd like to clarify that the only people in this forum who can ask you to edit your post are the moderators (and of course me) and I consider it an abuse of the system for anyone else to make these kind of demands.

The three moderators are Lorna, theminis and Nicky80.  

As always, if anyone has any problems with someone else's posts, please feel free to send a PM to one of us and we'll take a look at it and decide whether it needs action.  Or you can make a comment in the thread along the lines of "I'm not sure we should be posting xyz" or something like that.  Never send a PM to another poster telling them to change their post.

If anyone has received a PM like this from another poster (not an administrator) please let me know and I'll remove the rights to the PM system from that person.

Katie or any moderators...could someone explain why my PMs stay in the outbox and never get sent out?What's the meaning of outbox?
I tried clearing my sentbox but it didnt work. Now my PMs still havent been sorted into sentbox not sure if they have been sent or not.
Thanks for any help.

Hi Sevens - I believe if something is in your outbox it means the recepient has not opened your private message.

Unless there's some glitch in the system.

Katie might be able to check as the mods wouldn't have access to check anything with that part of the site.

You are right Lorna....Sometimes I have messages in my outbox too for a while. The email only disappears out of your outbox if the recipient has read your message. If it is not read by the recipient then it stays in your outbox.

If you use Outlook for example and an email stays in the "outbox" that normally means it has not been sent. But in this forum it is different. It is 100% send but it will only show in your send inbox when it was read by the recipient and until then it shows in your Outbox. 

Hope that is more clear....

I wasn't sure about the use of outbox as I use Chinese email system and we dont have this thing. It disturbed me because I thought the PMs in outbox mean they havent been sent and sometimes the PMs went to the sentbox quickly but sometimes they just stayed in the outbox. I really thought there must be something wrong with those "leftovers".
From now on I shouldnt be worried!
